Surface ozone(O3)is a secondary pollutant harmful to human health and a greenhouse gas which is one of the prime climate *** to the clean atmospheric environment of the antarctic region and given the complexity of O3 chemistry,the observation of surface O3 variability in this region is necessary in the quest to better understand the potential sources and sink of polar surface *** this paper,we highlighted our observations on O3 variability at the Great Wall Station(GWS)during austral summer in December 2018 and January *** continuous surface O3 measurement at the GWS,antarctica was carried out using the Ecotech Ozone *** understand the roles of the meteorological conditions on the temporal variations of O3,meteorological data was obtained from the conventional auto-observational station at the *** Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPLIT)model was employed to investigate the air mass transport over the *** observed austral summer surface O3 concentrations at the GWS exhibited variability and were significantly lower than those previously observed at other permanent coastal stations in *** surface ozone variability at the GWS was strongly influenced by the synoptic change of air mass origin although the roles of photochemistry production and destruction were still *** characteristics and stable surface O3 characterized the air masses that reached the *** unique characteristic of surface O3 at the coastal site of GWS was emphasized by its synoptic air mass characteristics,which displayed a significant influence on surface O3 *** mass that traveled over the ocean with relatively shorter distance was linked to the lower O3 level,whereby the marine transport of reactive bromine(Br)species was thought to play a significant role in the tropospheric chemistry that leads to O3 ***,the diurnal variation indicated that the O3 background concentration levels were n

Concentrations and distribution of novel brominated flame retardants in the atmosphere and soil of Ny-Alesund and London Island,Svalbard,arctic

Novel brominated flame retardants(NBFRs)were investigated in arctic air and soil samples collected from Ny-?lesund and London Island,Svalbard,during chinese scientific research expeditions to the arctic during 2014–*** concentrations of 9 NBFRs in the arctic air and soil were 4.9–8.7 pg/m3(average 6.8 pg/m3)and 101–201 pg/g dw(average 150 pg/g dw),*** atmospheric concentration of hexabromobenzene(HBB)was significantly correlated with that of pentabromotoluene(PBT)and pentabromobenzene(PBBz),suggesting similar source and environmental fate in the arctic *** significant spatial difference was observed among the different sampling sites,both for air and soil samples,indicating that the effects of the scientific research stations on the occurrence of NBFRs in the arctic were *** fugacities from soil to air of pentabromoethylbenzene(PBEB),2,3-dibromopropyl 2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether(DPTE),and decabromodiphenylethane 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl)ethane(DBDPE)were lower than the equilibrium value,indicating a nonequilibrium state of these compounds between air and soil,the dominant impact of deposition and the net transport from air to *** correlation analysis between the measured and predicted soil-atmosphere coefficients based on the absorption model showed that the impact of the soil organic matter on the distribution of NBFRs in the arctic region was *** the best of our knowledge,this work is one of the limited reports on atmospheric NBFRs in the arctic and the first study to investigate the occurrence and fate of NBFRs in the arctic soil.

Cenozoic Exhumation of Larsemann Hills,East antarctica:Evidence from Apatite Fission-track Thermochronology

Does Cenozoic exhumation occur in the Larsemann Hills, East antarctica？ In the present paper, we conducted an apatite fission-track thermochronologic study across the Larsemann Hills of East antarctica. Our work reveals a Cenozoic exhumation event at 49.8 ± 12 Ma, which we interpret to be a result of exhumation caused by crustal extension. Within the uncertainty of our age determination, the timing of extension in East antarctica determined by our study is coeval with the onset time of rifting in West antarctica at c.55 Ma. The apatite fission-track cooling ages vary systematically in space, indicating a coherent block rotation of the Larsemann Hills region from c.50 Ma to c.10 Ma. This pattern of block tilting was locally disrupted by normal faulting along the Larsemann Hills detachment fault at c.5.4 Ma. The regional extension in the Larsemann Hills, East antarctica was the result of tectonic evolution in this area, and may be related to the global extension. Through the discussion of Pan-Gondwanaland movement, and Mesozoic and Cenozoic extensions in West and East antarctica and adjacent areas, we suggest that the protracted Cenozoic cooling over the Larsemann Hills area was caused by extensional tectonics related to separation and formation of the India Ocean at the time of Gondwanaland breakup.

Calcification of planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma(sinistral) controlled by seawater temperature rather than ocean acidification in the antarctic Zone of modern Sothern Ocean

Neogloboquadrina pachyderma(sinistral), the dominant planktonic foraminiferal species in the mid-to-high latitude oceans, represents a major component of local calcium carbonate(CaCO) production. However, the predominant factors,governing the calcification of this species and its potential response to the future marine environmental changes, are poorly understood. The present study utilized an improved cleaning method for the size-normalized weight(SNW) measurement to estimate the SNW of N. pachyderma(sin.) in surface sediments from the Amundsen Sea, the Ross Sea, and the Prydz Bay in the antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean. It was found that SNW of N. pachyderma(sin.) is not controlled by deep-water carbonate dissolution post-mortem, and can be therefore, used to reflect the degree of calcification. The comparison between N. pachyderma(sin.) SNW and environmental parameters(temperature, salinity, nutrient concentration, and carbonate system) in the calcification depth revealed that N. pachyderma(sin.) SNWs in the size ranges of 200–250, 250–300, and 300–355 μm are significantly and positively correlated with seawater temperature. Moreover, SNW would increase by ~30% per degree increase in temperature, thereby suggesting that the calcification of N. pachyderma(sin.) in the modern antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean is mainly controlled by temperature, rather than by other environmental parameters such as ocean acidification. Importantly, a potential increase in calcification of N. pachyderma(sin.) in the antarctic Zone to produce CaCOwill release COinto the atmosphere. In turn, the future ocean warming will weaken the ocean carbon sink, thereby generating positive feedback for global warming.

Sleep architecture, periodic breathing and mood disturbance of expeditioners at Kunlun Station(4087 m) in antarctica

Several studies have reported the detrimental impacts of hypoxia exposure on *** Kunlun Station(altitude 4087 m)is located at Dome A,the highest point on the antarctic ice sheet and one of the most extreme environments on *** study investigated alteration of sleep,breathing and mood status in healthy expeditioners at Kunlun Station at Dome *** study examined 10 male volunteers of the inland transverse party to Kunlun Station during the 31st chinese National antarctic Research Expedition,and valid data from eight volunteers were *** structure,breathing pattern and mood were monitored using portable polysomnography(PSG)and profile of mood state(POMS)at two time points:(1)at Zhongshan Station(10 m)before departure to Kunlun Station;(2)on nights 12–13 of residence at Kunlun ***-wave sleep(Stage 3 non-rapid eye movement)was markedly reduced at Kunlun Station(P<0.01).Total sleep time,sleep efficiency and sleep latency showed no significant *** respiratory events(P<0.05),apnea/hypopnea index(AHI)(P<0.05)and hypopnea index(P<0.01)substantially increased at Kunlun *** most common respiratory disorder was periodic breathing,occurring almost exclusively during non-rapid eye movement *** oxygen desaturation index increased markedly(P<0.05),while nocturnal oxygen saturation dramatically fell at Kunlun Station(P<0.05).Vigor scores decreased at Kunlun Station(P<0.05).Expeditioners exhibited reduced slow wave sleep,induced periodic breathing,decreased oxygen saturation and decreased vigor at Kunlun Station.

Sources of organic matter and paleo-environmental implications inferred from carbon isotope compositions of lacustrine sediments at Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea, antarctica

The carbon isotopic composition of organic matter （δ^13Corg） was determined in two sediment cores （IIL1 and IIL9） recovered from Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea, antarctica, and analyzed to identify the sources of that organic matter. The δ^13Corg values of sediments of IIL9 were found to vary between -14.6‰ and -11.6‰, with a mean of-13.4‰ （n=48）. These values were significantly higher than those of IIL1 sediments which varied between -23.2‰ and -20.4‰, with a mean of-21.8%o （n=55）. The variation in δ^13Corg values in these two sediment cores indicate different sources of organic matter, The relatively high 6~3Corg values in IIL9 are in accordance with a source from algae, while the low δ^13Corg values in IIL1 evince significant influence from penguin guano with algae as the secondary source. Compared with the reference data from other high-latitude lake sediments and plants, the δ^13Corg values in IIL9 were extremely high, a result likely related to intense competition for CO2 assimilation among algal species during the growing season in this relatively shallow pond. These results indicate that sedimentary δ^13Corg is a reliable proxy for paleo-primary productivity in ponds at Inexpressible Island.

A freeze-on ice zone along the Zhongshan–Kunlun ice sheet profile, East antarctica, by a new ground-based ice-penetrating radar

The 2012/2013 chinese antarctic Research Expedition （CHINARE）＇s inland traverse from Zhongshan station to Kunlun station on the East antarctic ice sheet provided an opportunity to reveal englacial freeze-on ice using ice-penetrating radar. A radar dataset along the profile was collected using a new ground-based radar system with a high frequency of 150 MHz. A typical example of a freeze-on ice structure was revealed in the radar images, similar to that found in the Dome A region. The subglacial stratigraphy showed a new freeze-on ice zone with a length of 10 km near the ice-bedrock interface along the traverse, located 1,044-1,056 km from the coast.

Ice thickness,internal layers,and surface and subglacial topography in the vicinity of chinese antarctic Taishan station in Princess Elizabeth Land,East antarctica

We present the results of two ground-based radio-echo-sounding（RES） and GPS surveys performed in the vicinity of new chinese Taishan station,Princess Elizabeth Land,East antarctica,obtained in two austral summers during CHINARE 21（2004/2005） and CHINARE 29（2012/2013）.The radar surveys measured ice thickness and internal layers using 60- and 150-MHz radar systems,and GPS measurements showed smooth surface slopes around the station with altitudes of 2607-2636 m above sea level（a.s.l.）.Radar profiles indicate an average ice thickness of 1900 m,with a maximum of 1949 m and a minimum of 1856 m,within a square area measuring approximately 2 km × 2 km in the vicinity of the *** ice thickness beneath the station site is 1870 *** subglacial landscape beneath the station is quiet sharp and ranges from 662 to 770 m a.s.l.,revealing part of a mountainous *** ice volume in the grid is estimated to be 7.6 km^*** a 60-MHz radar profile with a length of 17.6 km at the region covering the station site,some disturbed internal layers are identified and traced;the geometry of internal layers within the englacial stratigraphy may imply a complex depositional process in the area.

Using the Polar ultraviolet imager(UVI)above the arctic and the all-sky camera(ASC)at chinese Zhongshan Station(ZHS)in antarctica,an outstanding hemispheric conjugate observation of postnoon"bright spots"in the arctic and auroral spirals in antarctica is *** bright auroral spirals,which are counterclockwise rotation viewed along the direction of the magnetic field,in postnoon auroral arcs are seen on the filed of view(FOV)of ASC at ZHS in the southern hemisphere while multiple"bright spots"are seen at the conjugate FOV of ASC on postnoon auroral oval in the northern hemisphere by Polar *** consider that the auroral spirals in postnoon arcs are the visible characteristic of postnoon UV"bright spots"on ground-based observation,and suggest that the current sheet instability above the parallel electric field region,which could produce the arcs,is the origin for"bright spots"occurring at the ionosphere,and the hemispheric symmetry/asymmetry of postnoon upward FACs,which is affected by the IMF By and season,can control the conjugacy/non-conjugacy of postnoon"bright spots"/auroral spirals between the two hemispheres.
