Differences in nitrite-oxidizing communities and kinetics in a brackish environment after enrichment at low and high nitrite concentrations

Nitrite accumulation in shrimp ponds can pose serious adverse effects to shrimp production and the *** study aims to develop an effective process for the enrichment of ready-to-use nitrite-oxidizing bacteria（NOB）inocula that would be appropriate for nitrite removal in brackish shrimp *** achieve this objective,the effects of nitrite concentrations on NOB communities and nitrite oxidation kinetics in a brackish environment were ***-bed biofilm sequencing batch reactors and continuous moving-bed biofilm reactors were used for the enrichment of NOB at various nitrite concentrations,using sediment from brackish shrimp ponds as seed *** results from NOB population analysis with quantitative polymerase chain reaction（q PCR）show that only Nitrospira were detected in the sediment from the shrimp *** the enrichment,both Nitrospira and Nitrobacter coexisted in the reactors controlling effluent nitrite at 0.1 and 0.5 mg-NO2^--N/*** the other hand,in the reactors controlling effluent nitrite at 3,20,and 100 mg-NO2^--N/L,Nitrobacter outcompeted Nitrospira in many orders of *** half saturation coefficients（Ks）for nitrite oxidation of the enrichments at low nitrite concentrations（0.1 and 0.5 mg-NO2^--N/L）were in the range of 0.71–0.98 mg-NO2^--N/*** contrast,the Ksvalues of NOB enriched at high nitrite concentrations（3,20,and 100 mg-NO2^--N/L）were much higher（8.36–12.20 mg-NO2^--N/L）.The results suggest that the selection of nitrite concentrations for the enrichment of NOB inocula can significantly influence NOB populations and kinetics,which could affect the effectiveness of their applications in brackish shrimp ponds.

Distinguish models mimicking the SM Higgs

The new particle around 125 GeV observed at the LHC is almost consistent with the standard model Higgs boson, except that the diphoton decay mode may be excessive. We summarize a number of possibilities. We propose to use the vector-boson fusion to test the underlying model for electroweak symmetry breaking. Using the well known dijet-tagging technique to single out the vector-boson fusion mechanism, we investigate potential of vector-boson fusion to discriminate a number of models suggested to give an enhanced inclusive diphoton production rate.

Our daily life leaves an increasing amount of digital traces,footprints that are improving our ***-mining tools,like recommender systems,convert these traces to information for aiding decisions in an ever-increasing number of areas in our *** feedback loop from what we do,to the information this produces,to decisions what to do next,will likely be an increasingly important factor in human behavior on all levels from individuals to *** this essay,we review some effects of this feedback and discuss how to understand and exploit them beyond mapping them on more well-understood *** take examples from models of spreading phenomena in social media to argue that analogies can be deceptive,instead we need to fresh approaches to the new types of data,something we exemplify with promising applications in medicine.

Mechanistic Analysis of AKT1 Regulation by the CBL-CIPK-PP2CA Interactions

Arabidopsis K＋ transporter I （AKT1） participates in K＋ uptake in roots, especially under Iow-K conditions. We recently identified a Ca2＋ signaling pathway consisting of multiple calcineurin B-like calcium sensors （CBLs） and multiple target kinases （CBL-interacting protein kinases or CIPKs） that phosphorylate and activate AKT1, whereas a specific PP2C-type phosphatase inactivates CIPK-dependent AKT1 activity. In this study, we analyzed the interactions between PP2Cs and the CBL-CIPK pathway and found previously unsuspected mechanisms underlying the CBL-CIPK-PP2C signaling processes. The interaction between the CIPKs and PP2Cs involves the kinase domain of the CIPK component, in addition to the protein phosphatase interacting motif （PPI） in the regulatory domain. Furthermore, specific CBLs physically interact with and inactivate PP2C phosphatases to recover the CIPK-dependent AKT1 channel activity. These findings provide fur- ther insights into the signaling network consisting of CBL-CIPK-PP2C interactions in the activation of the AKT1 channel.

The first principle calculation of elemental-vacancy-assisted modifications on structural properties and optical responses of ZnO system

The structural properties and optical responses of ZnO0.94and Zn0.94O systems as the possible models of ZnO system containing elemental defect states were studied using the plane-wave method within the generalized gradient *** pristine ZnO system was used as the *** simulated XRD patterns showed the three highest intensity for（100）,（002）,and（101） orientations for all the *** to O vacancy,Zn vacancy mostly provided higher structure factor shifts of ZnO ***,the strongest local-symmetry distortion at ZnO4tetrahedra was implied in Zn0.94O *** optical responses showed that all the systems exhibited the optical dichroism based on the extinction coefficient ***,Zn0.94O system showed the lowest energy levels of absorption and high-reflectance ***,the highest saturation threshold energy of the effective number of valence electrons was obtained for this *** result emphasizes the importance of Zn vacancy in providing the significant effect on the optical responses of ZnO system.

Thioredoxin Reductase Type C （NTRC） Orchestrates Enhanced Thermotolerance to Arabidopsis by Its Redox-Dependent Holdase Chaperone Function

Genevestigator analysis has indicated heat shock induction of transcripts for NADPH-thioredoxin reduc-tase, type C （NTRC） in the light. Here we show overexpression of NTRC in Arabidopsis （NTRC°E） resulting in enhanced tolerance to heat shock, whereas NTRC knockout mutant plants （ntrcl） exhibit a temperature sensitive phenotype. To investigate the underlying mechanism of this phenotype, we analyzed the protein＇s biochemical properties and protein structure. NTRC assembles into homopolymeric structures of varying complexity with functions as a disulfide reductase, a foldase chaperone, and as a holdase chaperone. The multiple functions of NTRC are closely correlated with protein structure.. Complexes of higher molecular weight （HMW） showed stronger activity as a holdase chaperone, while low molecular weight （LMW） species exhibited weaker holdase chaperone activity but stronger disulfide reductase and fol-dase chaperone activities. Heat shock converted LMW proteins into HMW complexes. Mutations of the two active site Cys residues of NTRC into Ser （C217/454S-NTRC） led to a complete inactivation of its disulfide reductase and foldase chaperone functions, but conferred only a slight decrease in its holdase chaperone function. The overexpression of the mutated C217/454S-NTRC provided Arabidopsis with a similar degree of thermotolerance compared with that of NTRC°E plants. However, after prolonged incubation under heat shock, NTRC°E plants tolerated the stress to a higher degree than C217/454S-NTRC°E plants. The results suggest that the heat shock-mediated holdase chaperone function of NTRC is responsible for the increased thermotolerance of Arabidopsis and the activity is significantly supported by NADPH.

Dear Editor, Telomeres are specific protein-DNA complexes that pro- tect the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes from fusion and degradation and are maintained by a specialized mecha- nism exerted by telomerase and telomere-binding proteins. Mammalian telomeres contain TTAGGG and are associated with a six-protein （e.g. TRF1, TRF2, TIN2, RAP1, POT1, and TPP1） complex called shelterin （de Lange, 2005）, which was involved in telomere homeostasis. Similarly to mammalian telomeres, telomeres in most plants are maintained by tel- omerase and telomere-associated proteins （e.g. AtTBP1, AtTRP1, AtTRB1, POT1, POT2, KU70, and KU80） and consist of tandem arrays of TTTAGGG. Among telomere-associated proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana, AtTRB proteins belong to the SMH （Single-Myb-Histone）-Iike family, in which proteins are composed of an N-terminal Myb domain, a central his- tone Hl-like globular domain, and a C-terminal coiled-coil region.

Lanthanide NIR luminescence for telecommunications, bioanalyses and solar energy conversion

Present-day advanced technologies heavily rely on the exciting magnetic and spectroscopic properties of lanthanide ions. In particular, their ability to generate well-characterized and intense near-infrared (NIR) luminescence is exploited in any modern fiber-optic telecommunication network. In this feature article, we first summarize the whereabouts underlying the design of highly luminescent NIR molecular edifices and materials. We then focus on describing the main trends in three applications related to this spectral range: telecommunications, biosciences, and solar energy conversion. In telecommunications, efforts concentrate presently on getting easily processable polymer-based waveguide amplifiers. Upconversion nanophosphors emitting in the visible after NIR excitation are now ubiquitous in many bioanalyses while their application to bio-imaging is still in its early stages; however, highly sensitive NIR-NIR systems start to be at hand for both in vitro and in vivo imaging, as well as dual probes combining magnetic resonance and optical imaging. Finally, both silicon-based and dye-sensitized solar cells benefit from the downconversion and upconversion capabilities of lanthanide ions to harvest UV and NIR solar light and to boost the overall quantum efficiency of these next-generation devices.

ESTIMATOR COMPETITION FOR POISSON PROBLEMS

We compare 13 different a posteriori error estimators for the Poisson problem with lowest-order finite element discretization. Residual-based error estimators compete with a wide range of averaging estimators and estimators based on local problems. Among our five benchmark problems we also look on two examples with discontinuous isotropic diffusion and their impact on the performance of the estimators. （Supported by DFG Research Center MATHEON.）
