Predictors of disease severity in ulcerative colitis patients from Southwestern ontario

AIM:To understand the demographic characteristics of patients in Southwestern ontario,Canada with ulcerative colitis(UC)in order to predict disease severity. METHODS:Records from 1996 to 2001 were exam- ined to create a database of UC patients seen in the London Health Sciences Centre South Street Hospital Inflammatory Bowel Disease *** be included, patients'charts were required to have information of their disease presentation and a minimum of 5 years of *** were reviewed using standardized data collection *** severity was generated during the chart review process,and non-endoscopic Mayo Score criteria were collected into a composite. RESULTS:One hundred and two consecutive patients'data were entered into the *** analyses revealed that 51%of the patients were male, the mean age at diagnosis was 39 years,13.7%had a first degree relative with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),61.8%were nonsmokers and 24.5%were *** 22.5%of patients the disease was limited to the rectum,in 21.6%disease was limited to the sigmoid colon,in 22.5%disease was limited to the left colon,and 32.4%of patients had pancolitis. Standard multiple regression analysis which regressed a composite of physician global assessment of disease severity,average number of bowel movements,and average amount of blood in bowel movements on year of diagnosis and age at time of diagnosis was significant,R 2=0.306,F(7,74)=4.66,P<0.01. Delay from symptoms to diagnosis of UC,gender, family history of IBD,smoking status and disease severity at the time of diagnosis didnot significantly predict the composite measure. CONCLUSION:UC severity is associated with younger age at diagnosis and year of diagnosis in a longitudinal cohort of UC patients,and may identify prognostic UC indicators.

Coagulation enhanced electrokinetic settling of mature fine oil sands tailings

The mature fine oil sand tailings(MFT) remain as slurry in the tailings pond for long time. The dewatering and consolidation of MFT for sustainable management is an important task for the mining industry. The objective of this study is to accelerate electrokinetic settling of MFT solids in suspensions in presence of optimal coagulant. In the first phase, optimal coagulant and coagulant dosage for settling of suspension are identified, i.e., ferric chloride at 350 mg/L. It is found that the chemical treatment is not much effective; the final solid content of the sediment is only 6.48% from an initial of 5%. In the second phase,combined coagulation and electrokinetic treatment is carried out to enhance the settling effect. The direct electric current is applied in continuous and intermittent modes on MFT suspensions placed in electrokinetic cell. The results show the final solid content reaches 23.74% under the combined application of350 mg/L ferric chloride and 218.75 V/m applied voltage gradient in the continuous mode. The intermittent current mode with 40% save in power consumption produces a settled sediment having 20.84% final solid content.

Orientation effect on ground motion measurement for Mexican subduction earthquakes

The existence of the principal directions of the ground motion based on Arias intensity is well-known. These principal directions do not necessarily coincide with the orientations of recording sensors or with the orientations along which the ground motion parameters such as the peak ground acceleration and the pseudo-spectral acceleration （PSA） are maximum. This is evidenced by the fact that the maximum PSA at different natural vibration periods for horizontal excitations do not correspond to the same orientation. A recent analysis carried out for California earthquake records suggests that an orientation-dependent ground motion measurement for horizontal excitations can be developed. The main objective of this study is to investigate and provide seismic ground motion measurements in the horizontal plane, including bidirectional horizontal ground motions, for Mexican interplate and inslab earthquake records. Extensive statistical analyses of PSA are conducted for the assessment. The analysis results suggest that similar to the case of California records, the average behavior of the ratio of the PSA to the maximum resulting PSA can be approximated by a quarter of an ellipse in one quadrant; and that the ratio can be considered to be independent of the value of the maximum resulting PSA, earthquake magnitude, earthquake distance and the focal depth. Sets of response ratios and attenuation relationships that can be used to represent a bidirectional horizontal ground motion measurement for Mexican interplate and inslab earthquakes were also developed.

Spatial information remains to be an important topic in geographic information system and in remote sensing fields,and spatial relationships have been increasingly incorporated into the image classification *** studies have employed multiple occurrences of spatial features(shape,texture,etc.,)to improve classification ***,less attention has been focused on using higher-level spatial relationships for image *** this study,two novel spatial relationships,namely,maximum spatial adjacency(MSA)and directional spatial adjacency(DSA),were proposed to assist in image *** proposed methods were implemented to extract buildings,beach,and emergent vegetation land-cover classes according to their spatial relationships with their corresponding reference *** promising results obtained from this study suggest that the proposed MSA and DSA spatial relationships can be valuable information in defining rule sets for a more reasonable and accurate classification.

Recently,sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)have attracted much attention owing to their high ionic conductivity and feasible mechanical *** environmental stability of sulfide-based SSEs is one of the critical aspects due to the possible decomposition,and ionic conductivity change will affect the fabrication and electrochemical performance of the ***,important efforts have been made to reveal and improve their environmental stability,and a timely summary of the progress is urgently *** this review,we first clarify the definition of environmental stability and its significance in the context of practical *** indicating the degradation mechanisms of sulfide-based SSEs,we summarize several effective strategies to improve their stability and also highlight the related theoretical *** stability of organic solvents of sulfide SSEs is also summarized and discussed,which may help reliable sulfide SSEs in the battery *** main target of this review is to gain insights and provide useful guidance to further improve the environmental stability of sulfide SSEs,which will finally promote the commercialization of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries.

Vanadium oxide assisted synthesis of networked silicon oxide nanowires and their growth dependence

Networked silicon oxide nanowires have been synthesized by VO2-assisted chemical vapor deposition at 1000 ~C on silicon substrate without supplying any gaseous or liquid Si source. Systematic study on the nanowire growth has indicated that morphology and composition of the final products are sensitive to the catalyst components, reaction atmosphere and temperature. Compared to Au and V02 as catalysts individually, co-catalysts of Au and V02 play a critical role in the formation of networked Si02 nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM） observations indicate that the silicon oxide nanowires have smooth surfaces with uniform diameters of 30-100 rim, and their lengths reach several hundred micrometers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） results reveal the atomic ratio of silicon to oxygen is about 1：2. Growth dependence of the networked nanowires on hydrogen and temperature is also discussed. Vapor-liquid-solid （VLS） process is proposed for the growth mechanism of the networked nanowires. It is also found that the growth mechanism of SiO2 nanowires by increasing the temperature up to 1200 ℃ changes to vapor-solid （VS） processes since wire-like structures can be formed without any catalyst or H2 gas introduced into the system.

Observations on the application of artificial neural network to predicting ground motion measures

Application of the artificial neural network （ANN） to predict pseudospectral acceleration or peak ground acceleration is explored in the study. The training of ANN model is carried out using feed-forward backpropagation method and about 600 records from 39 California earthquakes. The statistics of the residuals or modeling error for the trained ANN-based models are almost the same as those for the parametric ground motion prediction equations, derived through regression analysis; the residual or modeling error can be modeled as a normal variate. The similarity and differences between the predictions by these two approaches are shown. The trained ANN-based models, however, are not robust because the models with almost identical mean square errors do not always lead to the same predictions. This undesirable behaviour for predicting the ground motion measures has not been shown or discussed in the literature; the presented results, at least, serve to raise questions and caution on this problem. A practical approach to ameliorate this problem, perhaps, is to consider several trained ANN models, and to take the average of the predicted values from the trained ANN models as the predicted ground motion measure.

High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Pouch Cells Enabled by in situ Solidification of a Novel Polymer Electrolyte

Conventional lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)with liquid electrolytes are challenged by their big safety concerns,particularly used in electric ***-solid-state batteries using solid-state electrolytes have been proposed to significantly improve safety yet are impeded by poor interfacial solid–solid contact and fast interface *** a compromising strategy,in situ solidification has been proposed in recent years to fabricate quasi-solid-state batteries,which have great advantages in constructing intimate interfaces and cost-effective mass *** this work,quasi-solid-state pouch cells with high loading electrodes(≥3 m Ah cm^(-2))were fabricated via in situ solidification of poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate-based polymer electrolytes(PEGDA-PEs).Both single-layer and multilayer quasi-solid-state pouch cells(2.0 Ah)have demonstrated stable electrochemical performance over500 *** superb electrochemical stability is closely related to the formation of robust and compatible interphase,which successfully inhibits interfacial side reactions and prevents interfacial structural *** work demonstrates that in situ solidification is a facile and cost-effective approach to fabricate quasi-solid-state pouch cells with both excellent electrochemical performance and safety.
