Thickness bound for nonlocal wide-field-of-view metalenses

Metalenses—flat lenses made with optical metasurfaces—promise to enable thinner,cheaper,and better imaging *** a sufficient angular field of view(FOV)is crucial toward that goal and requires a tailored incidentangle-dependent ***,we show that there is an intrinsic trade-off between achieving a desired broad-angle response and reducing the thickness of the *** the memory effect in disordered media,this thickness bound originates from the Fourier transform duality between space and *** can write down the transmission matrix describing the desired angle-dependent response,convert it to the spatial basis where its degree of nonlocality can be quantified through a lateral spreading,and determine the minimal device thickness based on such a required lateral *** approach is *** applied to wide-FOV lenses,it predicts the minimal thickness as a function of the FOV,lens diameter,and numerical *** bound is tight,as some inverse-designed multi-layer metasurfaces can approach the minimal thickness we *** work offers guidance for the design of nonlocal metasurfaces,proposes a new framework for establishing bounds,and reveals the relation between angular diversity and spatial footprint in multi-channel systems.

Machine learning models of material properties accelerate materials discovery,reproducing density functional theory calculated results at a fraction of the cost1–*** bridge the gap between theory and experiments,machine learning predictions need to be distilled in the form of interpretable chemical rules that can be used by *** we develop a framework to address this gap by combining evolutionary algorithm-powered search with machine-learning surrogate *** then couple the search results with supervised learning and statistical *** strategy enables the efficient search of a materials space while providing interpretable design *** demonstrate its effectiveness by developing rules for the design of direct bandgap materials,stable UV emitters,and IR perovskite ***,we conclusively show how DARWIN-generated rules are statistically more robust and applicable to a wide range of applications including the design of UV halide perovskites.

Particle-based electrocatalysts need to be glued on an electrode,where fast and slow steps of the reaction are spatially and temporally convoluted near the *** the particles are under continuous electrochemical stress,decay in their catalytic performance(a.k.a.,fatigue)often occurs due to degradation of the active materials,detachment of particles and deteriorating *** we report that these problems are well addressed by fluidizing the *** catalysts,instead of being fixed on an electrode,are now fluidized in the *** occurs when individual particles collide with the electrode,which collectively delivers a continuous,scalable and stable electrochemical *** the catalysts now work in rotation,they experience much faster kinetics and avoid the buildup of excessive electrochemical stress,leading to orders of magnitude higher particle-average efficiency and greatly enhanced fatigue ***-ofconcepts are demonstrated using Pt/C catalysts for three well-known reactions,including oxygen evolution,hydrogen evolution and methanol oxidation reactions,all of which suffer severe performance decay using Pt/C under different *** electrocatalysis breaks the spatial and temporal continuum of electrocatalytic reactions,and makes them drastically more fatigue *** is material-and reaction-agnostic,and should be a general approach to enhance electrocatalytic reactions.
