Optimizing hardware-software co-design based on non-ideality in memristor crossbars for in-memory computing

The memristor crossbar, with its exceptionally high storage density and parallelism, enables efficient vector matrix multiplication(VMM), significantly improving data throughput and computational efficiency. However, its analog computing is vulnerable to issues like IR-drop, device-to-device(D2D) variation, and stuck-at-fault(SAF), leading to a substantial decrease in the inference accuracy of neural networks deployed on crossbars. This work presents a hardware-software co-design approach tailored to deal with memristor crossbar non-ideality. We introduce an end-to-end functional array simulator(FAST) for precise and ultra fast end-to-end training, mapping, and evaluation of neural networks on the memristor crossbar. Utilizing the sparsity of the memristor crossbar coefficient matrix, it achieves simulation with low storage and computational resource requirements,dynamically selecting the optimal solution to complete the process. It can also precisely simulate the impact of non-ideal effects such as IR-drop, retention, variation, SAF, and AD/DA precision. Using FAST, we assess memristor crossbar matrix operations under non-ideal conditions, identifying the max throughput and the most energy-efficient crossbar configurations. Additionally,we propose a comparator-based activation function modulation(CAFM) scheme and its corresponding hardware architecture with programmable activation function circuits to address the IR-drop issue, enabling low power and area overheads, resulting in the recovery of neural network accuracy by 54% or more. This is validated within FAST, demonstrating the success of our hardware-software optimization co-design.

Nondestructive detection of atom counts in laser-trapped 171 Yb atoms

We present the experimental demonstration of nondestructive detection of ~(171)Yb atoms in a magneto-optical trap(MOT) based on phase shift measurement induced by the atoms on a weak off-resonant laser beam. After loading a green MOT of ~(171)Yb atoms, the phase shift is obtained with a two-color Mach–Zehnder interferometer by means of ±45 MHz detuning with respect to the ~1S_(0)–~1P_(1) transition. We measured a phase shift of about 100 mrad corresponding to an atom count of around 5 × 10^(5). This demonstrates that it is possible to obtain the number of atoms without direct destructive measurement compared with the absorption imaging method. This scheme could be an important approach towards a high-precision lattice clock for clock operation through suppression of the impact of the Dick effect.

WS_(2)with layered graphite-like structure as anode for sodium ion batteries has high specific ***,the poor cycling performance and rate capability of WS_(2)caused by the low electronic conductivity and structure changes during cycles inhibit its practical ***,metallic phase(1T)W_(x)Mo_(1−x)S2(x=1,0.9,0.8 and 0.6)with high electronic conductivity and expanded interlayer spacing of 0.95 nm was directly prepared via a simple hydrothermal ***,1T W_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)S_(2)as anode for sodium ion batteries displays high capacities of 411 mAh g^(-1)at 0.1 A g^(-1)after 180 cycles and 262 mAh g^(-1)at 1 A g^(-1)after 280 cycles and excellent rate capability(245 mAh g^(-1)at 5 A g^(-1)).The full cell based on Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(2)O_(2)F/C cathode and 1T W_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)S_(2)anode also exhibits high capacity and good cycling *** irreversible electrochemical reaction of 1T W_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)S_(2)with Na ions during first few cycles results in the main products of W-Mo alloy and *** strong adsorption of W-Mo alloy with polysulfides can effectively suppress the dissolution and shuttle effect of polysulfides,which ensures the excellent cycling performance of 1T W_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)S_(2).

Physico-chemical Characteristics of Wet-milled Ultrafine-granulated Phosphorus Slag as a Supplementary Cementitious Material

The phosphorus slag（PS） can be used as a supplementary cementitious material due to its potential hydrating activity. However, its usage has been limited by its adverse effects, including prolonged setting and lowered early-stage strength. In this study, we achieved ultrafine granulation of PS using wetmilling（reducing d50 to as low as 2.02 μm） in order to increase its activity, and examined the physico-chemical properties of the resulting materials, including particle-size distribution, slurry pH, zeta potential, and activity index, as well as how their replacement level and granularity affect the setting time and mechanical performance of PS-cement mixture systems. The results suggested that as the granularity increases, there are significant boosts in the uniformity of particle sizes, slurry pH, and activity index, and the effects on cement paste, including setting times, and early-and late-stage strengths, are significantly mitigated. When d（50）=2.02 μm, the slurry becomes strongly alkaline（pH=12.16） compared to the initial d（50）=20.75 μm（pH=9.49）, and the activity is increased by 73%; when used at 40% replacement, the PS-cement mixture system can reach a 28 d compressive strength of 93.2 MPa, 36% higher than that of the pure cement control group.
