In situ probing of cell-cell communications with surface- enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） nanoprobes and microfluidic networks for screening of immunotherapeutic drugs

Discovering novel drugs for cancer immunotherapy requires a robust in vitro drug screening platform that allows for straightforward probing of cell-ceil communications. Here, we combined surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） nanoprobes with microfluidic networks to monitor in situ the cancer-immune system intercellular communications. The microfluidic platform links up immune cells with cancer cells, where the cancer-cell secretions act as signaling mediators. First, gold@silver core--shell nanorods were employed to fabricate SERS immunoprobes for analysis of the signaling molecules. Multiple cancer secretions in a tumor microenvironment were quantitatively analyzed by a SERS-assisted three-dimensional （3D） barcode immunoassay with high sensitivity （1 ng/mL）. Second, in an on-chip cell proliferation assay, multiple immunosuppressive proteins secreted by cancer cells were found to inhibit activation of immune cells, indicating that the platform simulates the physiological process of cancer-immune system communications. Furthermore, potential drug candidates were tested on this platform. A quantitative SERS immunoassay was performed to evaluate drug efficacy at regulating the secretion behavior of cancer cells and the activity of immune cells. This assay showed the suitability of this platform for in vitro drug screening. It is expected that the fully integrated and highly automated SERS-microfluidic platform will become a powerful analytical tool for probing intercellular communications and should accelerate the discovery and clinical validation of novel druKs.

This paper presents a distribution free method for predicting the extreme wind velocity from wind monitoring data at the site of the Runyang Suspension Bridge (RSB), China using the maximum entropy theory. The maximum entropy theory is a rational approach for choosing the most unbiased probability distribution from a small sample, which is consistent with available data and contains a minimum of spurious information. In this paper, the theory is used for estimating a joint probability density function considering the combined action of wind speed and direction based on statistical analysis of wind monitoring data at the site of the RSB. The joint probability distribution model is further used to estimate the extreme wind velocity at the deck level of the RSB. The results of the analysis reveal that the probability density function of the maximum entropy method achieves a result that fits well with the monitoring data. Hypothesis testing shows that the distributions of the wind velocity data collected during the past three years do not obey the Gumbel distribution. Finally, our comparison shows that the wind predictions of the maximum entropy method are higher than that of the Gumbel distribution, but much lower than the design wind speed.

We investigate the thermal entanglement in the Lipkin-Meshkov-G1ick （LMG） model which consists of spin-1/2 particles with XXZ-type exchange interactions between any pair of them. The ferromagnetic （FM） and antiferromagnetic （AFM） cases are completely analyzed at both finite temperature and zero temperature. According to the results obtained by accurate numerical calculation, several interesting physic phenomena and characteristics of thermal entanglement in the LMG model are found. Not only do we evaluate the entanglement of the LMG model, but also discover the correlations between macroscopic physical quantities and thermal entanglement.

The key points to consider in determining the effectiveness of using structural isolation with shape memory alloys （SMA） are the constitutive model, the SMA isolation device and the analysis method. In this paper, a simplified constitutive model based on the classic theory of plasticity is proposed to simulate the behavior of the superelasticity of the SMA, in which the martensite volume fraction is considered as one of the state variables. Comparisons between simulation results and experimental results are made and indicate that the proposed constitutive model yields stress-strain curves that are in good agreement with the experimental ones. Thus, the proposed model can correctly simulate the yield mechanism and energy dissipation capacity of the SMA. Next, in order to make full use of the superelasticity of SMA, a new SMA isolator composed of pre-tensioned SMA bars is presented. Then, a finite element analytical model is established to simulate the behavior of the SMA isolator according to its configuration and simplified constitutive model. Finally, a simplified design method for long-span structures installed with SMA isolators is proposed, which is further used to investigate the isolation effects of a space grid structure. Results show that the SMA isolator can reduce the seismic responses of the structure effectively, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed SMA isolation method.

In contemporary power grids or microgrids,harmonic distortion has emerged as one of the critical power quality issues for utility power grids,which has escalated especially due to the high penetration of power-electronic-converter-interfaced distributed generation(DG).This paper first illustrates the prevalent dispute revolving around the harmonic power sharing and distortion restraint,and subsequently proposes a consensusbased framework that facilitates an accurate sharing of harmonics among multi-DGs connected in parallel,with an effective suppression of the output voltage *** with the majority of existing studies addressing the issue of voltage harmonics at the point of common coupling(PCC),our method primarily emphasizes on the output voltage distortion since the power quality requirement for certain local critical loads is often known to be *** the help of adaptive regulation,the overall distortion produced at the output terminals of DGs can be retained within an acceptable *** working principle of the proposed control method,which is not only easy to implement but also independent of model parameters,is further described in *** the small-signal dynamic model,the system stability and robustness are *** hardware-in-the-loop(HIL)simulations aid in determining the outcome of the proposed strategy in microgrid control.

Effect of chlorine content of chlorophenols on their adsorption by mesoporous SBA-15

Studies on the effect of the chlorine content of chlorophenols （CPs） on their adsorption from aqueous solution by mesoporous SBA-15 are important in understanding the mechanisms of CP adsorption. In this study, three CPs with different degrees of chlorine content （i.e., 2-chlorophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol） were investigated. The effects of parameters such as temperature and solution pH were studied. The results showed that CP adsorption by SBA- 15 increased with increasing number of chlorine substituents and depended strongly on the temperature and solution pH. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy change （AGO）, enthalpy change （△H^0） and entropy change （△S^0） were also calculated. By comparison of the adsorption coefficient of CPs with varying physical-chemical properties （size, hydrophobicity and electron density）, we propose that hydrophobic interactions between CPs and the SBA-15 surface, as well as electron donor-acceptor （EDA） complexes between oxygen of the siloxane surface of SBA-15 （e--donor） and the n-system of the CPs （e--acceptor）, were dominant adsorption mechanisms.
