Seasonal thermal energy storage using natural structures:GIS-based potential assessment for northern china

Seasonal thermal energy storage(STES)allows storing heat for long-term and thus promotes the shifting of waste heat resources from summer to winter to decarbonize the district heating(DH)*** being a promising solution for sustainable energy system,large-scale STES for urban regions is lacking due to the relatively high initial investment and extensive land *** close the gap,this study assesses the potentials of using two naturally available structures for STES,namely valley and ground pit *** on geographical information system(GIS)methods,the available locations are searched from digital elevation model and selected considering several criteria from land uses and construction *** costs of dams to impound the reservoir and the yielded storage capacities are then quantified to guide the choice of suitable *** assessment is conducted for the northern china where DH systems and significant seasonal differences of energy demand *** total,2,273 valley sites and 75 ground pit sites are finally identified with the energy storage capacity of 15.2 billion GJ,which is much larger than the existing DH demand in northern *** results also prove that 682 valley sites can be achieved with a dam cost lower than 20 CNY/m^(3).By conducting sensitivity analysis on the design dam wall height and elevations,the choices of available natural structures are expanded but practical issues about water pressures and constructions are also ***,the identified sites are geographically mapped with nearest urban regions to reveal their roles in the DH *** general,560 urban regions are found with potential STES units and most of them have STES storage capacities larger than their own DH *** novel planning methodology of this study and publicly available datasets create possibilities for the implementations of large-scale STES in urban DH systems.

Green-synthesized, biochar-supported nZVI from mango kernel residue for aqueous hexavalent chromium removal: Performance, mechanism and regeneration

A biochar-supported green nZVI(G-nZVI@MKB)composite was synthesized using mango kernel waste with“dual identity”as reductant and biomass of *** G-nZVI@MKB with a Fe/C mass ratio of 2.0(G-nZVI@MKB2)was determined as the most favorable composite for hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI))*** influencing parameters were discussed,and 99.0%of Cr(VI)removal occurred within 360 min under these optimized ***-second order kinetic model and intra-particle diffusion model well depicted Cr(VI)removal *** XRD,FTIR,SEM,and XPS analyses verified the key roles of G-nZVI and functional groups,as well as the primary removal mechanisms involving electrostatic attraction,reduction,and complexation.G-nZVI@MKB2 exhibited good stability and reusability with only a 16.4%decline in Cr(VI)removal after five *** study offered evidence that mango kernel could be recycled as a beneficial resource to synthesize green nZVI-loaded biochar composite for efficient Cr(VI)elimination from water.

Self-oscillating systems abound in the natural world and offer substantial potential for applications in controllers,micro-motors,medical equipments,and so ***,numerical methods have been widely utilized for obtaining the characteristics of self-oscillation including amplitude and ***,numerical methods are burdened by intricate computations and limited precision,hindering comprehensive investigations into self-oscillating *** this paper,the stability of a liquid crystal elastomer fiber self-oscillating system under a linear temperature field is studied,and analytical solutions for the amplitude and frequency are ***,we establish the governing equations of self-oscillation,elucidate two motion regimes,and reveal the underlying ***,we conduct a stability analysis and employ a multi-scale method to obtain the analytical solutions for the amplitude and *** results show agreement between the multi-scale and numerical *** research contributes to the examination of diverse self-oscillating systems and advances the theoretical analysis of self-oscillating systems rooted in active materials.

Community Residents' Heritage Preservation Intentions and Influencing Factors Based on the Extended Theory of Planned Behavior: A Case Study of Historic Districts in Tianjin

Community residents are important stakeholders in preserving historic districts. This paper introduces the extended theory of planned behavior to explore the intentions of residents to participate in heritage preservation, and further explains the influencing factors. Seven historic districts in Tianjin are selected as case studies. The results show that the residents' intentions to preserve heritage are positively influenced by three subjective perception factors of heritage preservation attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, as well as two objective situational factors of environmental quality of historic district and policy guidance for heritage preservation. Furthermore, the objective situational factors indirectly influence heritage preservation intentions through the subjective perception factors. Based on these findings, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions to enhance the heritage preservation intentions of community residents.

Synergistic effects of chemical additives and mature compost on reducing H_2S emission during kitchen waste composting

Additives could improve composting performance and reduce gaseous emission,but few studies have explored the synergistic of additives on H_(2)S emission and compost *** research aims to make an investigation about the effects of chemical additives and mature compost on H_(2)S emission and compost maturity of kitchen waste *** results showed that additives increased the germination index value and H_(2)S emission reduction over 15 days and the treatment with both chemical additives and mature compost achieved highest germination index value and H_(2)S emission reduction(85%).Except for the treatment with only chemical additives,the total sulfur content increased during the kitchen waste *** proportion of effective sulfur was higher with the addition of chemical additives,compared with other *** relative abundance of H_(2)S-formation bacterial(Desulfovibrio)was reduced and the relative abundance of bacterial(Pseudomonas and Paracoccus),which could convert sulfur-containing substances and H_(2)S to sulfate was improved with *** the composting process with both chemical additives and mature compost,the relative abundance of Desulfovibrio was lowest,while the relative abundance of Pseudomonas and Paracoccus was *** together,the chemical additives and mature compost achieved H_(2)S emission reduction by regulating the dynamics of microbial community.

A Simplified Method for the Stress Analysis of Underground Transfer Structures Crossing Multiple Subway Tunnels

According to the design specifications,the construction of extended piles involves traversing the tunnel’s upper region and extending to the underlying rock *** address this challenge,a subterranean transfer structure spanning multiple subway tunnels was *** on the function of piles in the transfer structure as springs with axial and bending stiffness,and taking into account the force balance and deformation coordination conditions of beams and plates within the transfer structure,we established a simplified mechanical model that incorporates soil stratification by combining it with the Winkler elastic foundation beam *** resolved established simplifiedmechanicalmodel employed finite difference technology and the Newton-Simpsonmethod,elucidating the mechanical mechanism of the transfer *** research findings suggest that the load carried by the upper structural columns can be transferred to the pile foundation beneath the beams through the transfer structure,subsequently reaching the deep soil layer and ensuring minimal impact on adjacent *** established simplified analysis method can be used for stress analysis of the transfer structure,concurrently considering soil stratification,pile foundation behavior,and plate *** pile length,pile section size,and beam section size within the transfer structure should account for the characteristics of the upper load,ensuring an even distribution of the beam bending moment.

The energy performance and passive survivability of high thermal insulation buildings in future climate scenarios

Given that the passive performance simulation of buildings based on typical meteorological year data and specific design schemes makes it challenging to respond to climate change and refine design requirements on time,this article established a passive performance prediction model for future buildings considering multi-dimensional variables including climate change,building design,and operational *** high thermal insulation buildings under future climates,the mild climate zone is more sensitive than the others,cooling energy demand is more sensitive than heating demand,apartments are more sensitive than office buildings,and passive survivability is more sensitive than energy performance;for buildings of the same type located in the same climate zone,thermal design solutions determine the increase rate of cooling *** potential benefits of climate warming on heating demand reduction are almost zero,but the cooling demand increases significantly,with apartments and office buildings increasing up to 22.1% and 5.0%,*** generally overheat in the future,and the increase rate of the mild zone far exceeds other zones with duration and severity being 3004.8% and 877.7%for apartments,and 884.3% and 288.9%for office buildings,respectively.

A case study on behaviors of composite soil nailed wall with bored piles in a deep excavation

A complete case of a deep excavation was explored. According to the practical working conditions, a 3D non-linear finite element procedure is used to simulate a deep excavation supported by the composite soil nailed wall with bored piles in soft soil. The modified cam clay model is employed as the constitutive relationship of the soil in the numerical simulation. Results from the numerical analysis are fitted well with the field data, which indicate that the research approach used is reliable. Based on the field data and numerical results of the deep excavation supported by four different patterns of the composite soil nailed wall, the significant corner effect is founded in the 3D deep excavation. If bored piles or soil anchors are considered in the composite soil nailed wall, they are beneficial to decreasing deformations and internal forces of bored piles, cement mixing piles, soil anchors, soil nailings and soil around the deep excavation. Besides, the effects due to bored piles are more significant than those deduced from soil anchors. All mentioned above prove that the composite soil nailed wall with bored piles is feasible in the deep excavation.
