A quasi-solid-state electrolyte with high ionic conductivity for stable lithium-ion batteries

The practical applications of solid-state electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)are hindered by their low ionic conductivity and high interfacial ***,an ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate based quasi-solid-state electrolyte(ETPTAQSSE)with a three-dimensional(3D)network is prepared by a one-step in-situ photopolymerization *** 3D network is designed to overcome the contradiction between the plasticizer-related ionic conductivity and the thickness-dependent mechanical property of quasi-solid-state *** ETPTA-QSSE achieves superb room-temperature ionic conductivity up to 4.55×10^(−3)S cm^(−1),a high lithium ion transference number of 0.57,along with a wide electrochemical window of 5.3 V(***+/Li),which outperforms most ever of the reported solid-state *** to the robust network structure and the cathodeelectrolyte integrated electrode design,Li metal symmetrical cells show reduced interface resistance and reinforced electrode/electrolyte interface *** applying the ETPTA-QSSE in LiFePO_(4)||Li cells,the quasi-solid-state cell demonstrates an enhanced initial discharge capacity(155.5 mAh g^(−1)at 0.2 C)accompanied by a high average Coulombic efficiency of greater than 99.3%,offering capacity retention of 92%after 200 ***,this work sheds light on the strategy of enhancing ionic conductivity and reducing interfacial resistance of quasi-solid-state electrolytes,which is promising for high-voltage LIBs.

Two-dimensional nanosheets as building blocks to construct three-dimensional structures for lithium storage

2D nanosheets such as graphene, silicene, phosphorene, metal dichalcogenides and MXenes are emerging and promising for lithium storage due to their ultrathin nature and corresponding chemical/physical properties. However, the serious restacking and aggregation of the 2D nanosheets are still hampering their applications. To circumvent the issues of 2D nanosheets, one efficient strategy is to construct 3D structures with hierarchical porous structures, good chemical/mechanical stabilities and tunable electrical conductivities. In this review, we firstly focus on the available synthetic approaches of 3D structures from 2D nanosheets, and then summarize the relationships between the microstructures of 3D structures built from 2D nanosheets and their electrochemical behaviors for lithium storage. On the basis of above results, some challenges are briefly discussed in the perspective of the development of various functional 3D structures.

Graphene versus MoS2： A short review

Graphene and MoS2 are two well-known quasi two-dimensional materials. This review presents a comparative survey of the complementary lattice dynamical and mechanical properties of graphene and MoSs, which facilitates the study of graphene/MoS2 heterostructures. These hybrid heterostructures are expected to mitigate the negative properties of each individual constituent and have attracted intense academic and industrial research interest.

A lariat-derived circular RNA is required for plant development in Arabidopsis

Lariat RNA is produced during pre-mRNA splicing, and it is traditionally thought as by-products, due to the quick turnover by debranching followed by degradation. However, recent findings identified many lariat RNAs accumulate with a circular form in higher eukaryotes. Although the remarkable accumulation, biological consequence of lariat-derived circular RNAs(here we name laciRNAs) remains largely unknown. Here, we report that a specific laciRNA from At5 g37720 plays an essential role in plant development by regulating gene expression globally. We focus on 17 laciRNAs with accumulation in wild type plants by circular RNA sequencing in Arabidopsis. To determine biological functions of these laciRNAs, we constructed one pair of transgenic plants for each laciRNA, in which the local gene with or without introns was over-expressed in wild type plants,respectively. By comparing morphological phenotypes and transcriptomic profiles between two classes of transgenic plants, we show that over-expression of the laciRNA derived from the 1 st intron of At5 g37720 causes pleiotropic phenotypes, including curly and clustered leaf, late flowering, reduced fertility, and accompanied with altered expression of approximately 800 *** results provide another example that a specific plant circular RNA regulates gene expression in a similar manner to that of other non-coding RNAs under physiological conditions.

A New Pathway for Senescence Regulation

Research concerning senescence has become a hotspot since the conception of ＇cellular senescence＇ was put forward by Drs. Hayflick and Moorhead over five decades ago [1]. Recently, a paper published in Science by Kang and colleagues, which this article aims to comment on, provides evidence of a new pathway involved in senescence [2]. Senescence is a physiological and pathological process induced by numerous factors, during which cell growth ceases and gene expression alters. As can be imagined, such state protects against the development of cancer and plays an important role in tissue repair [3]. On the other hand, senescence is involved in many other processes such as aging and neurodegenerative disease [4-6]. In this paper, we show that every harmonic map from a compact K?hler manifold with uniformly RC-positive curvature to a Riemannian manifold with non-positive complex sectional curvature is constant. In particular, there is no non-constant harmonic map from a compact K¨ahler manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature to a Riemannian manifold with non-positive complex sectional curvature.

Hydrodynamic modelling of flow impact on structures under extreme flow conditions

Apart from the direct threat to human lives, the flood waves as a result of the rapid catchment response to intense rainfall, breaches of flood defences, tsunamis or storm surges may induce huge impact forces on structures, causing structural damage or even failures. Most existing design codes do not properly account for these impact forces due to the limited understanding of the underlying physical processes and the lack of reliable empirical formulae or numerical approaches to quantifying them. This paper presents laboratory experiments to better understand the interaction between the extreme flow hydrodynamics and the hydraulic structures and uses the measured data to validate a numerical model. The model solves the two-dimensional shallow water equations using a finite volume Godunov-type scheme for the reliable simulation of complex flow hydrodynamics. New model components are developed for estimating the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure to quantify the flow impact on structures. The model is applied to reproduce two selected experiment tests with different settings and satisfactory numerical results are obtained, which confirms its predictive capability. The model will therefore provide a potential tool for wider and more flexible field-scale applications.

In situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Diagnostic for Characterization and Performance Test of Catalysts

The present work establishes a systematic approach based on the application of in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） for the investigation of the crystal structure, thermal stability, redox behavior （temperature-programmed reduction/temperatureprogrammed re-oxidation） as well as the catalytic properties of Co3O4 thin films. The syntheses of Co3O4 were achieved by chemical vapor deposition in the temperature range of 400-500℃. The structure analysis of the as-prepared material revealed the presence of two prominent IR bands peaking at 544 cm-1 （υ1） and 650 cm-1 （υ2） respectively, which originate from the stretching vibrations of the Co-O bond, characteristic of the Co3O4 spinel. The lattice stability limit of Co3O4 was estimated to be above 650℃. The redox properties of the spinel structure were determined by integrating the area under the emission bands υ1 and υ2 as a function of the temperature. Moreover, Co3O4 has been successfully tested as a catalyst towards complete oxidation of dimethyl ether below 340 ℃. The exhaust gas analysis during the catalytic process by in situ absorption FTIR revealed that only CO2 and H2O were detected as the final products in the catalytic reaction. The redox behavior suggests that the oxidation of dimethyl ether over Co3O4 follows a Mars-van Krevelen type mechanism. The comprehensive application of in situ FTIR provides a novel diagnostic tool in characterization and performance test of catalysts.
