Nonlinear all-optical technology is an ultimate route for the next-generation ultrafast signal processing of optical communication *** nonlinear functionalities need to be implemented in photonics,and complex oxides are considered as promising candidates due to their wide panel of *** this context,yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)stands out,thanks to its ability to be epitaxially grown on silicon,adapting the lattice for the crystalline oxide family of *** report,for the first time to the best of our knowledge,a detailed theoretical and experimental study about the third-order nonlinear susceptibility in crystalline *** self-phase modulation-induced broadening and considering the in-plane orientation of YSZ,we experimentally obtained an effective Kerr coefficient of n2YSZ=4.0±2×10^-19 m^2·W^-1 in an 8%(mole fraction)YSZ *** agreement with the theoretically predicted n2YSZ=1.3×10^-19 m^2·W^-1,the third-order nonlinear coefficient of YSZ is comparable with the one of silicon nitride,which is already being used in nonlinear *** promising results are a new step toward the implementation of functional oxides for nonlinear optical applications.

Hybrid silicon slotted photonic crystal waveguides:how does third order nonlinear performance scale with slow light?

We investigate in this paper the influence of slow light on the balance between the Kerr and two-photon absorption(TPA) processes in silicon slotted hybrid nonlinear waveguides. Three typical silicon photonic waveguide geometries are studied to estimate the influence of the light slow-down factor on the mode field overlap with the silicon region, as well as on the complex effective nonlinear susceptibility. It is found that slotted photonic crystal modes tend to focalize in their hollow core with increasing group index(n_G) values. Considering a hybrid integration of nonlinear polymers in such slotted waveguides, a relative decrease of the TPA process by more factor of 2 is predicted from n_G=10 to n_G=50. As a whole, this work shows that the relative influence of TPA decreases for slotted waveguides operating in the slow light regime, making them a suitable platform for third-order nonlinear optics.

A functional relationship between monothiol glutaredoxins and Bolas has been unraveled by genomic analyses and in several high-throughput studies. Phylogenetic analyses coupled to transient expression of green fluo- rescent protein （GFP） fusions indicated that, in addition to the sulfurtransferase SufE1, which contains a C-terminal Bola domain, three Bola isoforms exist in Arabidopsis thaliana, Bola1 being plastidial, Bola2 nucleo-cytoplasmic, and Bola4 dual-targeted to mitochondria and plastids. Binary yeast two-hybrid experiments demonstrated that all Bolas and SufE 1, via its Bola domain, can interact with all monothiol glutaredoxins. Most interactions between protein couples of the same subcellular compartment have been confirmed by bimolecular fluorescence complementation. In vitro experiments indicated that monothiol glutaredoxins could regulate the redox state of Bola2 and SufE1, both proteins possessing a single conserved reactive cysteine. Indeed, a glutathionylated form of SufE1 lost its capacity to activate the cysteine desuifurase, Nfs2, but it is reactivated by plastidial glutaredoxins. Besides, a monomeric glutathionyiated form and a dimeric disulfide-bridged form of Bola2 can be preferentially reduced by the nucleo-cytoplasmic GrxS17. These results indicate that the glutaredoxin-Bola interaction occurs in several subcellular compartments and suggest that a redox regulation mechanism, disconnected from their capacity to form iron-sulfur cluster-bridged heterodimers, may be physiologically relevant for Bola2 and SufE1.

The aim of this paper is to report the results of experiments carried out on Al-Cu alloys with different Cu contents,studying the microstructure evolution during holding in the semi-solid *** 3-D microstructure was observed by in situ X-ray microtomography carried out at ESRF Grenoble,*** variation of the solid-liquid interface area per unit volume during holding was *** addition,local observations show that two coarsening mechanisms of the solid particles occur simultaneously:dissolution of small particles to the benefit of larger ones by an Ostwald-type mechanism and the growth of necks between solid particles due to *** observations confirm that in situ X-ray tomography is a very powerful tool to study the microstructure evolution in the semi-solid state and the influencing mechanisms in real-time.

The organization of nano-objects on macroscopic surfaces is a key challenge for the technological improvement and implementation of *** achieving operational functions,it is required to assemble nano-objects as controllable building blocks in highly ordered ***,we demonstrate the growth and self-organization of metallic nanowires on surfaces into hexagonal superlattices with tunable characteristic lengths depending of the stabilizing surfactants *** from a reacting mixture containing a Pt(111)substrate,a Co organometallic precursor,an amine,and an acid dissolved in a solvent,we quantify the structural evolution of superlattices of vertical single-crystalline Co nanowires on Pt,using a combined analysis of small angle neutron scattering,transmission,and scanning electron *** show the concerted steps of a spontaneous growth and self-organization of the nanowires into two-dimensional(2D)hexagonal lattice on Pt,at intervals starting from a few hours of reaction to a highly ordered superlattice at longer ***,it is shown that apart from long-chain acid and long-chain aliphatic amine pairs used as stabilizers,the combination of a long-chain aliphatic and a short-chain aromatic ligand in the synthesis can also be employed for the nanowire superlattices ***,the possibility to employ different pairs allows quantitative modulation of the nanowire arrays,such as the interwire distance and the packing fraction.

The vast diversity of morphologies,body size,and lifestyles of snakes represents an important source of information that can be used to derive bio-inspired robots through a biology-push and pull *** understanding of the detailed kinematics of swimming snakes is a fundamental prerequisite to conceive and design bio-inspired aquatic snake ***,only limited information is available on the kinematics of swimming *** and accurate methods are needed to fill this knowledge *** the present paper,three existing methods were compared to test their capacity to characterize the kinematics of swimming snakes.(1)Marker tracking(deftac),(2)Markerless pose estimation(deeplabCut),and(3)Motion capture were considered.(4)We also designed and tested an automatic video processing *** methods provided different albeit complementary data sets;they also involved different technical issues in terms of experimental conditions,snake manipulation,or processing *** tracking provided accurate data that can be used to calibrate other *** capture posed technical difficulties but can provide limited 3D *** pose estimation required deep learning(thus time)but was efficient to extract the data under various experimental ***,automatic video processing was particularly efficient to extract a wide range of data useful for both biology and robotics but required a specific experimental setting.

Climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub (Ulex europaeus): a global scale comparison in native and introduced regions

Aims Invasive species,which recently expanded,may help understand how climatic niche can shift at the time scale of the current global ***,we address the climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub(common gorse,Ulex europaeus)at the world and regional scales to assess how it could contribute to increasing *** Based on a 28187 occurrences database,we used a combination of 9 species distribution models(SDM)to assess regional climatic niche from both the native range(Western Europe)and the introduced range in different parts of the world(North-West America,South America,North Europe,Australia and New Zealand).Important Findings despite being restricted to annual mean temperature between 4℃ and 22℃,as well as annual precipitation higher than 300 mm/year,the range of bioclimatic conditions suitable for gorse was very *** on a native versus introduced SDM comparison,we highlighted a niche expansion in North-West America,South America and to a lesser degree in Australia,while a niche displacement was assessed in North *** niche changes induced an increase in potential occupied areas by gorse by 49,111,202 and 283%in Australia,North Europe,North-West America and South America,*** the contrary,we found no evidence of niche change in New Zealand,which presents similar climatic condition to the native environment(Western Europe).This study highlights how niche expansion and displacement of gorse might increase invasibility at regional *** change in gorse niche toward new climatic conditions may result from adaptive plasticity or genetic evolution and may explain why it has such a high level of *** into account the possibility of a niche shift is crucial to improve invasive plants management and control.

Histone Acetyltransferase AtGCN5/HAG1 Is a Versatile Regulator of developmental and Inducible Gene Expression in Arabidopsis

Histone acetylation/deacetylation is a dynamic process and plays an important role in gene regulation. Histone acetylation homeostasis is regulated by antagonist actions of histone acetyltransferases （HAT） and deacetylases （HDAC）. Plant genome encodes multiple HATs and HDACs. The Arabidopsis HAT gene AtGCNS/HAGlplays an essential role in many plant development processes, such as meristem function, cell differentiation, leaf and floral organogenesis, and responses to environmental conditions such as light and cold, indicating an important role of this HAT in the regulation of both long-term developmental switches and short-term inducible gene expression. AtGCN5 targets to a large number of promoters and is required for acetylation of several histone H3 lysine residues. Recruitment of AtGCN5 to target promoters is likely to be mediated by direct or indirect interaction with DNA-binding transcription factors and/or by interaction with acetylated histone lysine residues on the targets. Interplay between AtGCN5 and other HATand HDAC is demonstrated to control specific regulatory pathways. Analysis of the role of AtGCN5 in light-inducible gene expression suggests a function of AtGCN5 in preparing chromatin commitment for priming inducible gene activation in plants.

High Temperature Stability of Platinum Nanoparticles on Few-layer Graphene Investigated by In Situ High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy

Heterogeneous catalytic reactions involve the use of highly dispersed active phases such as metal, metal oxide, or metal sulphide nanoparticIes on thermally stable supports. Fluctuations of the reaction temperature during the reactions can induce sintering of the particles. The stability of such small particles represents a crucial parameter in the development of new families of catalysts with high activity in many fields. Here we report the stability of platinum nanoparticles （2-3 nm） on a few-layer graphene （FLG） surface as studied by in situ high temperature transmission electron microscopy.

Interspecific competition with native species during biological invasions can sometimes limit alien *** aimed to determine the potential ecological effects of Limatus durhamii Theobald 1901,a native Neotropical mosquito (Diptera:Culicidae) species,on the invasive species Aedes (Stegomyia)aegypti (Linnaeus 1762)that breeds in the same artificial water *** time and adult dry mass were measured in 3 rearing conditions:control (a single larva),intraspecific competition (2 conspecific larvae),and interspecific competition (2 heterospecific larvae).Food was provided ad libitum to eliminate exploitative *** ***,development time was not affected by interspecific interference competition (nonsignificant differences with the control)and the adult dry mass was significantly higher,meaning that individual fitness likely ***,because previous studies showed longer development time and lighter adults during competition with other invasive mosquitoes,it is likely that *** can express a different phenotype depending on the competing *** similar pattern found for *** females and the nonsignificant difference with the control for males explain in part why this species can compete with ***.
