Functional correlates of skull shape in Chiroptera:feeding and echolocation adaptations

Morphological,functional,and behavioral adaptations of bats are among the most diverse within mammals.A strong association between bat skull morphology and feeding behavior has been suggested ***,morphological variation related to other drivers of adaptation,in particular echolocation,remains *** assessed variation in skull morphology with respect to ecology(diet and emission type)and function(bite force,masticatory muscles and echolocation characteristics)using geometric morphometrics and comparative *** study suggests that variation in skull shape of 10 bat families is the result of adaptations to broad dietary categories and sound emission types(oral or nasal).Skull shape correlates with echolocation parameters only in a subsample of insectivorous species,possibly because they(almost)entirely rely on this sensory system for locating and capturing *** emitting low frequencies are characterized by a ventrally tilted rostrum,a trait not associated with feeding *** result questions the validity of a trade-off between feeding and echolocation *** study advances understanding of the relationship between skull morphology and specific features of echolocation and suggests that evolutionary constraints due to echolocation may differ between different groups within the Chiroptera.

Karyotype analysis and polyploidy in Palaua and a comparison with its sister group Fuertesimalva(Malvaceae)

Palaua(Malveae,Malvaceae)comprises 15 species endemic to the hyperarid coastal desert of Chile and *** far,chromosome counts have been known for two diploid species(2n=2x=10)*** we report new chromosome numbers for 12 species of Palaua and four of its sister group *** including 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride(DAPI)/chromomycin(CMA3)fluorescent banding are presented for selected species representative of each of the main clades of *** important finding is the discovery of polyploids in one exclusively tetraploid species(***)and four species with mixed diploid and tetraploid cytotypes(***,***,***,and ***).The diploid and tetraploid karyotypes are all unimodal,symmetrical and show one or two pairs of satellite chromosomes with their associated CMA+/DAPI- band depending on the *** some of the tetraploids an autopolyploid origin is suggested.

DEAR EDITOR,During a survey in 2014,several tube-nosed bats(Vespertilionidae:Murininae:Murina)were collected in Sichuan *** on morphological characters,these bats did not match any species previously recorded from *** analyses and phylogenetic inference based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences indicated that they represented a new species,named here as Murina jinchui *** the new species is presently known only from Wolong National Nature Reserve,it is unlikely to be a rare species in the area based on our capture frequencies.

本文综述了欧洲白垩纪非海相软体动物群,列出了主要产自英格兰南部、法国和西班牙早白垩世的16个不同沉积层的59个分类单元。淡水动物群以珠蚌类双壳类和田螺类腹足类为主,但在有些地点也存有肺螺类腹足类。这些化石类群与现代类型很相似,说明白垩纪淡水中的水草、氧气与营养环境良好。在欧特里沃期和巴列姆期,淡水与边缘海环境中的动物群组成都发生了显著的变化。欧洲的淡水生物群落早在巴列姆期就已存在,此时的有些类群,如著名的Mar garitifera(s.l.)valdensis在欧洲西部有着广泛的分布。英格兰南部的早白垩世韦尔登群被认为是欧洲最连续的非海相白垩纪地层,其上部的生物群可与西班牙的LasHoyas动物群和法国的Wassy动物群相对比。这3个动物群,以及法国侏罗(汝拉)和英格兰南部波倍克的侏罗纪-白垩纪的过渡生物群——Purbeck动物群,是了解欧洲白垩纪淡水动物群的关键动物群。

DEAR EDITOR,The disk-footed bat Eudiscopus denticulus(Osgood,1932)is a rare species in Southeast *** two chiropteran surveys in the summer of 1981 and 2019,eight and three small Myotis-like bats with distinct disk-like hindfeet were collected from Yunnan Province,China,***,craniodental,and phylogenetic evidence confirmed these specimens as ***,representing a new genus in *** complete mitochondrial genome consistently showed robust support for *** as a basal lineage within *** coding patterns and characteristics of its mitochondrial genome were similar to that of other published genomes from *** echolocation signals of the newly collected individuals were *** potential distribution range of Eudiscopus in Southeast Asia inferred using the MaxEnt model indicated its potential occurrence along the southern border region of Yunnan,China.
