Rolling Dynamic Compaction(RDC),which is a ground improvement technique involving non-circular modules drawn behind a tractor,has provided the construction industry with an improved ground compaction capability,especially with respect to a greater influence depth and a higher speed of compaction,resulting in increased productivity. However,to date,there is no reliable method to predict the effectiveness of RDC in a range of ground conditions. This paper presents a new and unique predictive tool developed by means of artificial neural networks(ANNs) that permits a priori prediction of density improvement resulting from a range of ground improvement projects that employed 4-sided RDC modules;commercially known as"impact rollers". The strong coefficient of correlation(i.e. R>0.86) and the parametric behavior achieved in this study indicate that the model is successful in providing reliable predictions of the effectiveness of RDC in various ground conditions.

We study the existence and uniqueness of the solution to a forward-backward stochastic differential equation with subdifferential operator in the backward equation. This kind of equations includes, as a particular case, multi-dimensional forward-backward stochastic differential equation where the backward equation is reflected on the boundary of a closed convex(time-independent) domain. Moreover, we give a probabilistic interpretation for the viscosity solution of a kind of quasilinear variational inequalities.

To overcome power fading induced by chromatic dispersion in optical fiber communications,optical field recovery is a promising solution for direct detection short-reach applications,such as fast-evolving data center interconnects(DCIs).To date,various direct detection schemes capable of optical field recovery have been proposed,including Kramers−Kronig(KK)and signal−signal beat interference(ssBI)iterative cancellation(IC)***,they are all restricted to the single sideband(ssB)modulation format,thus conspicuously losing half of the electrical spectral efficiency(sE)compared with double sideband(DsB)***,ssB suffers from the noise folding issue,requiring a precise optical filter that complicates the receiver *** such,it is highly desirable to investigate the field recovery of DsB signals via direct *** this paper,for the first time,we propose a novel receiver scheme called carrier-assisted differential detection(CADD)to realize optical field recovery of complex-valued DsB signals via direct ***,CADD doubles the electrical sE compared with the KK and ssBI IC receivers by adopting DsB modulation without sacrificing receiver ***,by using direct detection without needing a precise receiver optical filter,CADD can employ cost-effective uncooled lasers as opposed to expensive temperature-controlled lasers in coherent *** proposed receiver architecture opens a new class of direct detection schemes that are suitable for photonic integration analogous to homodyne receivers in coherent detection.

The effect of lamellar orientation on the deformation behavior of eutectic high entropy alloy at the micrometer scale,and the roles of two rarely explored laminate orientations(i.e.,the lamellar orientation at~0°and 45°angles with the loading direction)in regulating size-dependent plasticity were investigated using in-situ micropillar compression *** alloy,CoCrFe NiTa_(0.395),consists of alternating layers of Laves and FCC *** was found that the yield stress of the 0°pillars scaled inversely with the pillar diameters,in which the underlying deformation mode was observed to transform from pillar kinking or buckling to shear banding as the diameter *** the case of the 450 pillars with diameters ranging from 0.4 to 3μm,there exists a’weakest’diameter of~1μm,at which both constraint effect and dislocation starvation are *** of the lamellar orientations,the strain hardening rate decreased with decreasing pillar diameter due to the diminishing dislocation accumulation that originated from the softening nature of large shear bands in the 0°pillars,and the enhanced probability of dislocation annihilation at the increased free surfaces in the 45°*** findings expand and deepen the understanding of the mechanical size effect in small-scale crystalline materials and,in so doing,provide a critical dimension for the development of high-performing materials used for nanoor microelectromechanical systems.

A model is developed to enable estimation of chloramine demand in full scale drinking water supplies based on chemical and microbiological factors that affect chloramine decay rate via nonlinear regression analysis *** model is based on organic character（specific ultraviolet absorbance（sUVA）） of the water samples and a laboratory measure of the microbiological（Fm） decay of *** applicability of the model for estimation of chloramine residual（and hence chloramine demand） was tested on several waters from different water treatment plants in Australia through statistical test analysis between the experimental and predicted *** showed that the model was able to simulate and estimate chloramine demand at various times in real drinking water *** elucidate the loss of chloramine over the wide variation of water quality used in this study,the model incorporates both the fast and slow chloramine decay *** significance of estimated fast and slow decay rate constants as the kinetic parameters of the model for three water sources in Australia was *** was found that with the same water source,the kinetic parameters remain the *** modelling approach has the potential to be used by water treatment operators as a decision support tool in order to manage chloramine disinfection.

We present three 3D numerical models of deep subduction where buoyant material from an oceanic plateau and a plume interact with the overriding plate to assess the influence on subduction dynamics, trench geometry, and mechanisms for plateau accretion and continental growth. Transient instabilities of the convergent margin are produced, resulting in： contorted trench geometry; trench migration parallel with the plate margin; folding of the subducting slab and orocline development at the convergent margin; and transfer of the plateau to the overriding plate. The presence of plume material beneath the oceanic plateau causes fiat subduction above the plume, resulting in a ＂bowed＂ shaped subducting slab. In plateau-only models, plateau accretion at the edge of the overriding plate results in trench migration around the edge of the plateau before subduction is re-established directly behind the trailing edge of the plateau. The plateau shortens and some plateau material subducts. The presence of buoyant plume material beneath the oceanic plateau has a profound influence on the behaviour of the convergent margin. In the plateau ~ plume model, plateau accretion causes rapid trench advance. Plate convergence is accommodated by shearing at the base of the plateau and shortening in the overriding plate. The trench migrates around the edge of the plateau and subduction is re-established well behind the trailing edge of the plateau, effectively embedding the plateau into the overriding plate. A slab window forms beneath the accreted plateau and plume material is transferred from the subducting plate to the over- riding plate through the window. In all of the models, the subduction zone maintains a relatively stable configuration away from the buoyancy anomalies within the downgoing plate. The models provide a dynamic context for plateau and plume accretion in Phanerozoic accretionary orogenic systems such as the East China Orogen and the Central Asian Orogen （Altiads）, which ar

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries(AZIBs)can be one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage devices for being non-flammable,low-cost,and ***,the challenges of AZIBs,including dendrite growth,hydrogen evolution,corrosion,and passivation of zinc anode during charging and discharging processes,must be overcome to achieve high cycling performance and stability in practical *** this work,we utilize a dual-func-tional organic additive cyclohexanedodecol(CHD)to firstly establish[Zn(H2O)5(CHD)]2+complex ion in an aqueous Zn electrolyte and secondly build a robust protection layer on the Zn surface to overcome these *** experiments and theoretical calculations are carried out to interpret the working mechanism of *** a very low concentration of 0.1 mg mL^(−1) CHD,long-term reversible Zn plating/stripping could be achieved up to 2200 h at 2 mA cm^(−2),1000 h at 5 mA cm^(−2),and 650 h at 10 mA cm^(−2) at the fixed capacity of 1 mAh cm^(−2).When matched with V_(2)O_(5) cathode,the resultant AZIBs full cell with the CHD-modified electrolyte presents a high capacity of 175 mAh g^(−1) with the capacity retention of 92%after 2000 cycles under 2 A g^(−1).such a performance could enable the commercialization of AZIBs for applications in grid energy storage and industrial energy storage.

Developing a chloramine decay index to understand nitrification:A case study of two chloraminated drinking water distribution systems

The management of chloramine decay and the prevention of nitrification are some of the critical issues faced by water utilities that use chloramine as a *** this study,potential association between high performance size exclusion chromatography（HPsEC）data obtained with multiple wavelength Ultraviolet（UV） detection from two drinking water distribution systems in Australia and nitrification occurrence was *** increase in the absorbance signal of HPsEC profiles with UV detection at λ = 230 nm between apparent molecular weights of 200 to 1000 Da was observed at sampling sites that experienced rapid chloramine decay and nitrification while its absorbance signal at λ =254 nm decreased.A chloramine decay index（C.D.I） defined as the ratio of area beneath the HPsEC spectra at two different wavelengths of 230 and 254 nm,was used in assessing chloramine decay *** *** of waters at locations that experienced nitrification were consistently higher than locations not experiencing nitrification.A simulated laboratory study showed that the formation of nitrite/nitrate and/or soluble microbial products and/or the release of extracellular polymeric substances（EPs） during nitrification may contribute to the *** findings suggest that C.D.I derived from HPsEC with multiple wavelength UV detection could be an informative index to track the occurrence of rapid chloramine decay and nitrification.
