A global consistent positive effect of urban green area size on bird richness

Background: Although the species-urban green area relationship (SARu) has been analyzed worldwide, the global consistency of its parameters, such as the fit and the slope of models, remains unexplored. Moreover,the SARu can be explained by 20 different models. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate which models provide a better explanation of SARus and, focusing on the power model,to evaluate the global heterogeneity in its fit and slope. Methods: We tested the performance of multiple statistical models in accounting for the way in which species richness increases with area, and examined whether variability in model form was associated with various methodological and environmental factors. Focusing on the power model, we analyzed the global heterogeneity in the fit and slope of the models through a meta-analysis. Results: Among 20 analyzed models, the linear model provided the best fit to the most datasets, was the top ranked model according to our efficiency criterion, and was the top overall ranked *** Kobayashi and power models were the second and third overall ranked models, *** number of green areas and the minimum number of species within a green area were the only significant variables explaining the variation in model form and performance, accounting for less than 10% of the variation. Based on the power model,there was a consistent overall fit (r2=0.50) and positive slope of 0.20 for the species richness increase with area ***:The good fit of the linear model to our SARu datasets contrasts with the non-linear SAR frequently found in true and non-urban habitat island systems;however, this finding may be a result of the small sample size of many SARu datasets. The overall power model slope of 0.20 suggests low levels of isolation among urban green patches, or alternatively that habitat specialist and area sensitive species have already been extirpated from urban green areas.

New insights into petrogenesis of Miocene magmatism associated with porphyry copper deposits of the Andean Pampean flat slab,Argentina

The Paramillos de Uspallata mining district located in the backarc region of the Pampean flat-slab segment(28°-33°S) features porphyry-type deposits genetically associated with Middle Miocene volcanics. This mineralizing magmatism comprising hydrothermally altered(sodic-calcic, potassic and phyllic alteration) subvolcanic and pyroclastic rocks of andesite-basaltic andesite and dacite-rhyolite composition with a typical arc signature, represents the eastward broadening of the Farellones arc by ~17 Ma. Its geochemistry also reveals a residual mineralogy of amphibole ± garnet with limited plagioclase fractionation resulting in an adakitic signal; however, according to the isotopic data collected in our study, the contributions of MASH(melting-assimilation-storage-homogenization) processes in the acquisition of this signal cannot be *** the broadening of the Farellones arc and its residual mineralogy e typical of relatively deep magmatic chambers e are consistent with a slab shallowing and outcoming crustal thickening *** tectonic scenario could be interpreted as a result of an early effect of the Juan Fernandez Ridge collision that was further to the north by ~17 Ma. Our findings suggest that magmas were fertile for porphyry type deposits during the early stages of the slab shallowing.

Habitat use and demography of Mus musculus in a rural landscape of Argentina

The main goal of the paper was to determine the habitat distribution of the house mouse(Mus musculus)within a rural landscape of buenos aires province,*** also studied the seasonal variation in abundance and reproductive *** habitats studied were poultry farms,human houses in a small village,cropfields,pastures,cropfield and pasture edges,riparian habitats(streams),railway embankments and *** captured 817 *** and 690 individuals of 5 native rodent *** was captured in poultry farms,houses,riparian habitats,cropfield and borders,but it showed a significantly higher abundance in poultry farms compared to the other *** presence outside poultry farms was significantly related to the distance to streams and poultry *** mean trapping success index of *** did not show significant variations between periods,but the proportion of active males was significantly higher in the spring-summer period than in the autumn-winter *** captures of *** in cropfields,borders and riparian habitats occurred in the spring-summer *** capture of *** in many types of habitats suggests that it can disperse outside poultry farms,and streams may be used as corridors.

Morphometrics confirms the conspecific between Blaptica dubia(Serville) and B. interior Hebard(Blattodea:Blaberidae)

Blaptica dubia(Serville, 1838) and B. interior Hebard, 1921 were considered to be cryptic species. The characteristics originally proposed for their identification are not *** the relationship between the two species should be re-considered. As a comparative approach and to analyze intraspecific variability, morphological and morphometric methods were performed. Traditional and new characters such as wing shape and pronotum contour were utilized. We found significant differences between both species(p dentification of species neither with the male genitalia or the pronotal *** on the obtained results, B. interior Hebard 1921 is considered to be a junior synonym of B. dubia(Serville, 1838).

Adverse effects induced by chromium Ⅵ, cadmium and arsenic exposure on hypothalamus-pituitary physiology

Environmental contamination with some metalloids and heavy metals(M/HM)raises concern due to well known adverse effects on *** these pollutants,chromium VI(Cr VI),cadmium(Cd)and arse-nic(As)are frequently present as a result of natural sources or due to industrial *** are able to easily enter the organism and negatively affect many organs and *** vivo(exposure to Cr VI,Cd or As through drinking water)and in vitro experiments(primary pituitary cell cultures)were performed in male Wistar rats to address their actions on hypothalamus-pituitary *** the M/HM accumulated in hypothalamus and pi-tuitary gland and decreased pituitary cell viability and prolactin release mostly by generation of reactive oxygen species,since it was partially prevented by antioxidant *** the pituitary,they increased lipid peroxy-dation and the expression of several oxidative stress *** death was mainly due to caspase-dependent ***(prolactin-secreting cells)were the most affected pituitary ***-driven cell death was also partially calcium-and ***,Cd stimulated the production of low levels of nitric oxide which exerted cytoprotective *** results showed that these M/HM display deleterious actions in hypothalamic-pituitary physiology by altering hormone release and promoting cell death.
