Factors hindering the degradation of pharmaceuticals from human urine in an iron-activated persulfate system

This study investigated the degradation of clofibric acid(CFA),bezafibrate(BZF),and sulfamethoxazole(SMX)in synthetic human urine using a novel mesoporous iron powderactivated persulfate system(mFe-PS system),and identified the factors limiting their degradation in synthetic human urine.A kinetic model was established to expose the radical production in various reaction conditions,and experiments were conducted to verify the modeling results.In the phosphate-containing mFe-PS system,the 120 min removal efficiency of CFA decreased from 95.1%to 76.6%as the phosphate concentration increased from 0.32 to 6.45 mmol/L,but recovered to 90.5%when phosphate concentration increased to 16.10 mmol/L.Meanwhile,the increased concentration of phosphate from 0.32 to 16.10mmol/L reduced the BZF degradation efficacy from 91.5%to 79.0%,whereas SMX removal improved from 37.3%to 62.9%.The m Fe-PS system containing(bi)carbonate,from 4.20 to166.70 mmol/L,reduced CFA and BZF removal efficiencies from 100%to 76.8%and 80.4%,respectively,and SMX from 83.5%to 56.7%within a 120-min reaction time.In addition,alkaline conditions(pH≥8.0)inhibited CFA and BZF degradations,while nonacidic pH(pH≥7.0)remarkably inhibited SMX degradation.Results of the kinetic model indicated the formation of phosphate(H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-))and/or carbonate radicals(CO_(3)^(·-))could limit pharmaceutical removal.The transformation products(TPs)of the pharmaceuticals revealed more incompletely oxidized TPs occurred in the phosphate-and(bi)carbonate-containing m Fe-PS systems,and indicated that H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-)mainly degraded pharmaceuticals via a benzene ring-opening reaction while CO_(3)^(·-)preferentially oxidized pharmaceuticals via a hydroxylation reaction.

With deployment of measurement units,fitting static equivalent models of distribution networks(DNs)by linear regression has been recognized as an effective method in power flow analysis of a transmission network.Increasing volatility of measurements caused by variable distributed renewable energy sources makes it more difficult to accurately fit such equivalent models.To tackle this challenge,this letter proposes a novel data-driven method to improve equivalency accuracy of DNs with distributed energy resources.This letter provides a new perspective that an equivalent model can be regarded as a mapping from internal conditions and border voltages to border power injections.Such mapping can be established through 1)Koopman operator theory,and 2)physical features of power flow equations at the root node of a DN.Performance of the proposed method is demonstrated on the IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 136-bus test systems connected to a 661-bus utility system.

In this paper,the authors study the cooperative target-fencing problem for n-dimensional systems and a target with a general trajectory.Without using the velocity of the vehicles,a position feedback control law is proposed to fence the general target into the convex hull formed by the vehicles.Specifically,the dynamics of each vehicle is described by a double-integrator system.Two potential functions are designed to guarantee connectivity preservation of the communication network and collision avoidance among the vehicles.The proposed approach can deal with a target whose trajectory is any twice continuously differentiable function of time.The effectiveness of the result is verified by a numerical example.

The high stretchability of two-dimensional(2D)materials has facilitated the possibility of using external strain to manipulate their properties.Hence,strain engineering has emerged as a promising technique for tailoring the performance of 2D materials by controlling the applied elastic strain field.Although various types of strain engineering methods have been proposed,deterministic and controllable generation of the strain in 2D materials remains a challenging task.Here,we report a nanoimprint-induced strain engineering(NISE)strategy for introducing controllable periodic strain profiles on 2D materials.A three-dimensional(3D)tunable strain is generated in a molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))sheet by pressing and conforming to the topography of an imprint mold.Different strain profiles generated in MoS_(2)are demonstrated and verified by Raman and photoluminescence(PL)spectroscopy.The strain modulation capability of NISE is investigated by changing the imprint pressure and the patterns of the imprint molds,which enables precise control of the strain magnitudes and distributions in MoS_(2).Furthermore,a finite element model is developed to simulate the NISE process and reveal the straining behavior of MoS_(2).This deterministic and effective strain engineering technique can be easily extended to other materials and is also compatible with common semiconductor fabrication processes;therefore,it provides prospects for advances in broad nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices.

Reversible protonic ceramic cells(RePCCs)hold promise for efficient energy storage,but their practicality is hindered by a lack of high-performance air electrode materials.Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite Sr_(3)Fe_(2)O_(7−δ)(SF)exhibits superior proton uptake and rapid ionic conduction,boosting activity.However,excessive proton uptake during RePCC operation degrades SF’s crystal structure,impacting durability.This study introduces a novel A/B-sites co-substitution strategy for modifying air electrodes,incorporating Sr-deficiency and Nb-substitution to create Sr_(2.8)Fe_(1.8)Nb_(0.2)O_(7−δ)(D-SFN).Nb stabilizes SF’s crystal,curbing excessive phase formation,and Sr-deficiency boosts oxygen vacancy concentration,optimizing oxygen transport.The D-SFN electrode demonstrates outstanding activity and durability,achieving a peak power density of 596 mW cm^(−2)in fuel cell mode and a current density of−1.19 A cm^(−2)in electrolysis mode at 1.3 V,650℃,with excellent cycling durability.This approach holds the potential for advancing robust and efficient air electrodes in RePCCs for renewable energy storage.

This study offers significant insights into the multi-physics phenomena of the SLM process and the subsequent porosity characteristics of ZK60 Magnesium(Mg)alloys.High-speed in-situ monitoring was employed to visualise process signals in real-time,elucidating the dynamics of melt pools and vapour plumes under varying laser power conditions specifically between 40 W and 60 W.Detailed morphological analysis was performed using Scanning-Electron Microscopy(SEM),demonstrating a critical correlation between laser power and pore formation.Lower laser power led to increased pore coverage,whereas a denser structure was observed at higher laser power.This laser power influence on porosity was further confirmed via Optical Microscopy(OM)conducted on both top and cross-sectional surfaces of the samples.An increase in laser power resulted in a decrease in pore coverage and pore size,potentially leading to a denser printed part of Mg alloy.X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT)augmented these findings by providing a 3D volumetric representation of the sample internal structure,revealing an inverse relationship between laser power and overall pore volume.Lower laser power appeared to favour the formation of interconnected pores,while a reduction in interconnected pores and an increase in isolated pores were observed at higher power.The interplay between melt pool size,vapour plume effects,and laser power was found to significantly influence the resulting porosity,indicating a need for effective management of these factors to optimise the SLM process of Mg alloys.

Phase recovery(PR)refers to calculating the phase of the light field from its intensity measurements.As exemplified from quantitative phase imaging and coherent diffraction imaging to adaptive optics,PR is essential for reconstructing the refractive index distribution or topography of an object and correcting the aberration of an imaging system.In recent years,deep learning(DL),often implemented through deep neural networks,has provided unprecedented support for computational imaging,leading to more efficient solutions for various PR problems.In this review,we first briefly introduce conventional methods for PR.Then,we review how DL provides support for PR from the following three stages,namely,pre-processing,in-processing,and post-processing.We also review how DL is used in phase image processing.Finally,we summarize the work in DL for PR and provide an outlook on how to better use DL to improve the reliability and efficiency of PR.Furthermore,we present a live-updating resource(https://***/kqwang/phase-recovery)for readers to learn more about PR.

In plants,thousands of nucleus-encoded proteins translated in the cytosol are sorted to chloroplasts and mitochondria by binding to specific receptors of the TOC(translocon on the outer chloroplast membrane)and the TOM(translocon on the outer mitochondrial membrane)complexes for import into those organelles.The degradation pathways for these receptors are unclear.Here,we discovered a converged ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for the degradation of Arabidopsis thaliana TOC and TOM tail-anchored receptors.The receptors are ubiquitinated by E3 ligase(s)and pulled from the outer membranes by the AAA+adenosine triphosphatase CDC48,after which a previously uncharacterized cytosolic protein,transmembrane domain(TMD)-binding protein for tail-anchored outer membrane proteins(TTOP),binds to the exposed TMDs at the C termini of the receptors and CDC48,and delivers these complexes to the 26S proteasome.

A facile chemical method for the development of photocatalytic coating products was proposed based on practical application perspective for the hong kong roadside nitrogen oxides(NO_(x))mitigation.TiO_(2)-based photocatalytic coating PC-C film with crystallized size of around 5–6 nm was synthesized with the peptization of H_(2)O_(2).The PC-C coating possesses a super-hydrophilicity surface and is proven to have a NO_(x)degradation rate of 46.8%with an optimum pH level of 7.In addition,the PC-C coating presents a promising photocatalytic NO_(x)degradation compared with other commercially available coating products and P25 when applied on two building materials of poly-methyl methacrylate(PMMA)and concrete surface.A weather resistance simulation and a 180-day on-site field trial were carried out the attenuation effects of photocatalytic coating applied in outdoor exposure.Based on epidemiological estimation and field investigation,hospital admissions for respiratory diseases(HARD)and mortality cases(MC)could be reduced with the application of PC-C coating along the street canyon.This work demonstrates the feasibility of air pollution control measures for the local roadside NO_(x)using photocatalytic technology,offering promising health benefits with environmental remediation.
