An Open Source Toolkit for Identifying Comparative Space-time Research Questions

Comparative space-time thinking lies at the heart of spatiotemporally integrated social sciences. The multiple dimensions and scales of socioeconomic dynamics pose numerous challenges for the application and evaluation of public policies in the comparative context. At the same time, social scientists have been slow to adopt and implement new spatiotemporally explicit methods of data analysis due to the lack of extensible software packages, which becomes a major impediment to the promotion of spatiotemporal thinking. The proposed framework will address this need by developing a set of research questions based on space-time-distributional features of socioeconomic datasets. The authors aim to develop, evaluate, and implement this framework in an open source toolkit to comprehensively quantify the changes and level of hidden variation of space-time datasets across scales and dimensions. Free access to the source code allows a broader community to incorporate additional advances in perspectives and methods, thus facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration. Being written in Python, it is entirely cross-platform, lowering transmission costs in research and education.

How do energy policies affect industrial green development in China:Renewable energy,energy conservation,or industrial upgrading?

The industrial sector has accounted for approximately 70%of China's total energy consumption over the past 30 *** green development is thus an important strategic goal of the Chinese industrial *** Chinese government has adopted various energy policies to facilitate industrial green *** to their different goals,these policies may have different impacts on the promotion of green development in the industrial *** panel data on 31 provinces from 2007 to 2014,we examine the effects of three types of energy policies—renewable energy,energy conservation,and industrial upgrading—on industrial green development in China,measured using reduced energy *** empirical findings suggest that all three types facilitate industrial green ***,effectiveness varies by policy type and *** energy and energy conservation policies have stronger impacts than policies aiming at upgrading traditional fossil fuel ***,it takes longer for the effectiveness of industrial upgrading policies to be manifested,compared with the other two *** discuss the implications of these empirical findings for future policymaking in promoting industrial green development.

Internal corporate governance and the use of IPO over-financing:Evidence from China

In this paper, we describe how Shenzhen A-share listed companies used funds raised in over-financed IPOs during the 2006-2010 period. In exploring the relationship between internal corporate governance and the use of funds raised in over-financed IPOs, we find that the use of such funds to engage in severe over-investment behavior is prevalent among listed companies. Reasonable internal corporate governance mechanisms can effectively alleviate over-investment problems listed companies encounter in using funds raised in overfinanced IPOs. However, the same individual serving as both chairman and CEO leads to funds raised in over-financed IPOs being over-invested. Moreover, executives driven by high levels of monetary compensation are more likely to use funds raised in such IPOs to engage in over-investment. We find that improving the balance of power between shareholders will help alleviate the over-investment of excess IPO funds. In addition, the over-investment problem is less severe in state-controlled listed companies than in their nonstate-controlled listed counterparts. This study provides policy recommendations for Chinese securities regulators to ensure listed companies use funds raised in over-financed IPOs both rationally and effectively.
