The elasticity-based Locally Exact Homogenization Theory(LEHT) is extended to study the mechanical-hygrothermal behaviors of unidirectionally-reinforced composites. Based on the framework developed previously, thermal and moisture effects are incorporated into the LEHT to study the homogenized and localized responses of heterogeneous materials, which are validated using available analytical and numerical techniques. The LEHT programs are then encapsulated as subroutines with Input/Output(I/O) interfaces, to be readily applied in different computational scenarios. In order to illustrate the efficiency of the LEHT, the theory is firstly coupled to the Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) algorithm in order to minimize the axial thermal expansion mismatch in hexagonal and square fiber arrays by tailoring the fiber volume fraction. The LEHT is then implemented into the lamination theory to study fabrication-induced residual stresses arising during the cool-down process which introduces local laminate stresses owing to thermo-mechanical property mismatch between plies. Both of these applications illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the LEHT in generating effective properties and local stress distributions, making the theory a golden standard in validating other analytical or numerical techniques as well as a reliable tool in composite design and practice for professionals and non-professionals alike.

Fitness and physiology of Adelges tsugae （Hemiptera： Adelgidae） in relation to the health of the eastern hemlock

The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand is an invasive insect that frequently causes hemlock （Tsuga spp.） mortality in the eastern United States. Studies have shown that once healthy hemlocks become infested by the adelgid, nutrients are depleted from the tree, leading to both tree decline and a reduction of the adelgid population. Since A. tsugae is dependent on hemlock for nutrients, feeding on trees in poor health may affect the ability of the insect to obtain necessary nutrients and may consequently affect their physiological and population health. Trees were categorized as lightly or moderately impacted by A. tsugae based on quantitative and qualitative tree health measurements. Population health ofA. tsugae on each tree was determined by measuring insect density and peak mean fecundity; A. tsugae physiological health was determined by measuring insect biomass, total carbon, carbohydrate, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen levels. Adelges tsugae from moderately impacted trees exhibited significantly greater fecundity than from lightly impacted trees. However, A. tsugae from lightly impacted hemlocks contained significantly greater levels of carbohydrates, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen. While the results of the physiological analysis generally support our hypothesis that A. tsugae on lightly impacted trees are healthier than those on moderately impacted trees, this was not reflected in the population health measurements. Adelges tsugae egg health in response to tree health should be verified. This study provides the first examination of A. tsugae physiological health in relation to standard A. tsugae population health measures on hemlocks of different health levels.

Existing active magnetic bearings （AMBs） operate in the linear region of the magnetic material flux density, which limits the utilization of the bearing capacity. In order to increase the utilization of the bearing capacity and enhance the performance of the AMB system, this paper develops a method for designing high performance linear feedback laws. The resulting feedback laws allow the AMB to operate in its nonlinear region and hence improve the closed-loop performance. We first establish an approximate nonlinear AMB current force response model, and place this nonlinear curve inside a sector formed by two piecewise linear lines. Based on the linear line segments in these two piecewise linear lines, we determine the maximum disturbance that can be tolerated by solving an optimization problem with linear matrix inequality （LMI） constraints. For a given level of disturbance under the maximum tolerable disturbance, we formulate and solve the problem of designing the linear feedback that achieves the highest level of disturbance rejection as another LMI problem. Both g2 disturbances and g disturbances are considered. Finally, we illustrate our design by both simulation and experimental results.

Our bodies turn over billions of cells daily via apoptosis and are in turn cleared by phagocytes via the process of"efferocytosis."Defects in efferocytosis are now linked to various inflammatory ***,we designed a strategy to boost efferocytosis,denoted"chimeric receptor for efferocytosis"(CHEF).We fused a specific signaling domain within the cytoplasmic adapter protein ELMO1 to the extracellular phosphatidylserine recognition domains of the efferocytic receptors BAI1 or TIM4,generating BELMO and TELMO,respectively.
