Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors: sustainable solutions for a greener future

Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors（PBRs） has emerged as a promising and sustainable approach to address various environmental and energy challenges, offering a multitude of benefits across diverse *** developments in microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors have contributed substantially to the development and optimization of sustainable bioprocesses. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent innovations and breakthroughs in the field of microalgae cultivation, with a specific focus on their application in photobioreactors, aimed at paving the way for a greener future. This study in-depth examines the advantages of microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors, concentrating on its effectiveness in wastewater treatment, CO2bioremediation, and the production of biofuels and high-value products. The review evaluates the effects of light,solar irradiation, temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in culture media, CO2concentrations, and pH on microalgae growth performance, including specific growth and biomass productivity. The study also examines open systems like unstirred ponds, raceway ponds, and circular ponds and closed systems like horizontal tubular, vertical bubble-column, airlift, flat panel, and plastic-bag photobioreactors, comparing their pros and cons. To optimize microalgae cultivation, key factors in photobioreactor design, including photosynthetic efficiencies, light/dark（L/D） cycles, CO2concentrations, mass transfer, hydrodynamics behavior, and p H, are extensively investigated. In addition, the review outlines recent developments in large-scale photobioreactors and highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with photobioreactor scale-up and design parameter optimization, including genetic engineering and economic feasibility. Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dimensional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D HOIPs)are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D HOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D HOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,remain ***,we demonstrate that>0.5µm thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements,we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also demonstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices.

Diabetes self-management (DSM) in Omani with type-2 diabetes

Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the status of diabetes self-management(DSM)among Omanis with type-2 diabetes and its relationship with glycemic control and demographic ***:A correlational descriptive design using questionnaire was conducted with a convenience sample of 266 Omani patients with type-2 diabetes to collect the ***:The findings indicated that DSM among the study subject is *** 1%of them were regular on SMBG;9.5%of them exercise regularly;and 18%of them maintain healthy diet *** significant relationship between DSM and glycemic control(p>0.05)was *** was found to be associated with age,gender,level of education,and duration of *** the differences between two regions in Oman(Muscat&Aldhakiliyah)indicated that participants from Muscat differ only in practicing ***:Results indicated that many Omani patients with type-2 diabetes do not perform DSM *** implications:The findings of this study set the stage to develop teaching strategies that will improve DSM and subsequently improve diabetes management in patient with type-2 diabetes in Oman.

The Use of Ground Penetrating Radar for Mapping Rock Stratigraphy and Tectonics:Implications for Geotechnical Engineering

This paper presents results from ground penetrating radar surveys using the SIR-10 B GPR instrument（manufactured by Geophysical Survey System Inc., USA）, with 400 MHz monostatic antenna（model 5 103）. Survey was made over 3 excavation levels along the highway section at the Ras en Naqab escarpment area, Southwest Jordan. A total of 217 m along 4 profiles were covered in the winter of 2012. The objectives of the study are（i） to evaluate the resolution of the GPR technique in the field for detecting and locating anomalies caused by subsurface structures like cavities, fractures and faults, and（ii） to describe stratigraphic nomenclature of the subsurface rocks of the area. 2D interpretation of the obtained data and the geological information demonstrate a strong correlation between the GPR anomalies and the subsurface geology. Based upon the lateral and vertical velocity changes with depth, the thickness and orientation of the subsurface layers are outlined. Analysis of the exposed section shows good agreement between the estimated thicknesses of lithostratigraphic units and the quantitative assessment of the radar waves velocity inferred from GPR data.

A New Algorithm for a Condenser Design for Large-Scale Nuclear Power Plants in Tropical Region

This work presents a new velocity search algorithm for designing a condenser of a 1200 MWe large-scale nuclear power plant situated in tropical *** this,the condenser pressure was considered in the range of 7.5-15 kPa while its tube inner diameter was taken as 28 mm with 1 mm tube wall *** longitudinal and transverse condensers with multiple shell tanks and varied shell tank lengths from 8-14 m have been considered in this *** different tertiary coolant temperature rises were chosen as 4°C,8°C and 12°C by considering tropical region average reservoir water temperature range of 28°C to 32°C during *** of tertiary coolant was kept within 0.75-1.5 m/s to ensure sufficient turbulence to avoid erosion-corrosion of the *** simulation has been employed to obtain tube-side pressure drop and convection heat transfer coefficient directly from tertiary coolant inlet velocity using κ-ω turbulent flow model.A new iterative“Velocity-search algorithm”has been developed that focuses on finding the correct tertiary coolant velocity instead of overall heat transfer *** revealed that velocity-search algorithm yielded very close to the important physical and thermal parameters of condenser compared to the existing design data in large scale nuclear power ***-search algorithm has given less number of condenser design physical parameters that meets the velocity acceptance criteria for longitudinal condenser compared to the transverse ***,velocity-search algorithm is found to be more reliable,robust,and consistent for condenser design compared to the conventional design algorithm used in Log-Mean Temperature Difference method.

Internet of Things(IoT)is a technological revolution that redefined communication and computation of modern *** generally refers to a network of gadgets linked via wireless network and communicates via *** management,especially energy management,is a critical issue when designing IoT *** studies reported that clustering and routing are energy efficient solutions for optimal management of resources in IoT *** this point of view,the current study devises a new Energy-Efficient Clustering-based Routing technique for Resource Management i.e.,EECBRM in IoT *** proposed EECBRM model has three stages namely,fuzzy logic-based clustering,Lion Whale Optimization with Tumbling(LWOT)-based routing and cluster maintenance *** proposed EECBRMmodel was validated through a series of experiments and the results were verified under several *** model was compared with existing methods in terms of energy efficiency,delay,number of data transmission,and network *** simulated,in comparison with other methods,EECBRM model yielded excellent results in a significant ***,the efficiency of the proposed model is established.

Mathematical modelling of the spread of COVID-19 on a university campus

In this paper we present a deterministic transmission dynamic compartmental model for the spread of the novel coronavirus on a college campus for the purpose of analyzing strategies to mitigate an *** goal of this project is to determine and compare the utility of certain containment strategies including gateway testing,surveillance testing,and contact tracing as well as individual level control measures such as mask wearing and social *** modify a standard SEIR-type model to reflect what is currently known about *** also modify the model to reflect the population present on a college campus,separating it into students and *** is done in order to capture the expected different contact rates between groups as well as the expected difference in outcomes based on age known for *** aim to provide insight into which strategies are most effective,rather than predict exact numbers of *** analyze effectiveness by looking at relative changes in the total number of cases as well as the effect a measure has on the estimated basic reproductive *** find that the total number of infections is most sensitive to parameters relating to student *** also find that contact tracing can be an effective control strategy when surveillance testing is ***,we validate the model using data from Villanova university's online COVID-19 Dashboard from Fall 2020 and find good agreement between model and data when superspreader events are incorporated in the model as shocks to the number of infected individuals approximately two weeks after each superspreader event.

Seismic analysis of historical masonry bridges is important for authorities in all countries hosting such cultural heritage *** masonry arch bridge investigated in this study was built during the Roman period and is on the island of Rhodes,in *** seismic records were considered and categorized as far-field,pulse-like nearfield,and non-pulse-like *** earthquake excitations were scaled to a target spectrum,and nonlinear timehistory analyses were performed in the transverse *** performance levels were introduced based on the pushover curve,and the post-earthquake damage state of the bridge was *** to the results,pulse-like near-field events are more damaging than non-pulse-like near-field ground *** the bridge is more vulnerable to far-field excitations than near-field ***,the structure will suffer extensive post-earthquake damage and must be retrofitted.

Novel Hydrodynamic Analysis Towards Capabilities Improvement of Bio-inspired Underwater Vehicles Using Momentum Redistribution Method

This paper presents an efficient and versatile OpenFOAM(Open-source Field Operation And Manipulation)-based numerical solver for fully resolved simulations that can handle any rigid and deforming bodies moving in the *** algorithm used for solving Fluid-Structure Interactions(FSI)involving the immersed structure with changeable shapes is based on the momentum redistribution *** present approach excludes the need to solve elastic equations,obtain high-accuracy predictions of the flow field and provide a rigorous basis for implementing the Immersed Boundary Method(IBM).The OpenFOAM implementation of the algorithm is discussed along with the design methodology for developing bio-inspired underwater vehicles using the present *** computational results are validated with the experimental observations of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional anguilliform swimmer case *** study further extended to the three-dimensional hydrodynamics of a bioinspired,self-propelling manta *** motion of the body is specified a priori according to the reported experimental *** results quantify the vortex formation and shedding processes and enable the identification of the portions of the body responsible for the majority of *** body accelerates from rest to an asymptotic mean forward velocity of 0.2 ms^(-1)in almost 5 s,consistent with experimental *** is observed that the developed computational model is capable of performing any motion simulation and manoeuvrability analysis,which are critical for the designers to develop novel unmanned underwater vehicles.
