Performance evaluation of laterite soil embankment stabilized with bottom ash,coir fiber,and lime

In tropical regions,heavy rainfall induces erosion and shallow landslides on road ***-based stabilization methods,common in these regions,contribute to climate change due to their high carbon *** study explored the potential application of coir fiber-reinforced laterite soil-bottom ash mixtures as embankment materials in the *** objective is to enhance engineered embankment slopes'erosion resistance and stability while offering reuse options for industrial *** study examined various mix designs for unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and permeability,utilizing 30%bottom ash(BA)and 1%coir fiber(CF)with varying sizes ranging from 10 to 40 mm,6%lime,and laterite soil(LS),followed by microstructural *** results demonstrate that the compressive strength increases as the CF length increases to 25 *** contrast,permeability increases continuously with increasing CF ***-treated mixtures exhibit superior short-and long-term strength and reduce permeability owing to the formation of cementitious materials,as confirmed by microstructural analyses.A lab-scale slope box was constructed to evaluate the surface erosion of the stabilized laterite soil *** on the rainfall simulation results,the LS-BA-CF mixtures show better resistance to erosion and deformation compared to untreated LS,especially when lime is added to the top *** study provides insights into a sustainable and cost-effective approach for slope stabilization using BA and CF,offering a promising solution for tropical regions susceptible to surface erosion and landslides.

In this work,the etherification of glycerol with n-butanol catalyzed by sulfonic acid functionalized on KIT-6 mesoporous silica(SO_(3)H-KIT-6)was investigated for the production of valuable fuel *** SO_(3)H-KIT-6 catalyst was synthesized by co-condensation with different molar ratios of tetraethoxysilane and 3-mercaptopropyl(methyl)di-methoxy *** etherification reaction was systematically examined to determine the optimal reaction temperature,reaction time,catalyst loading,and glycerol to n-butanol ratio under autogenous *** maximum glycerol conversion and di-glyceryl n-butyl ether(di-GNBE)selectivity were 59.09 and 51.50%,respectively,when the SO_(3)H-KIT-6 catalyst with the highest acidity was ***,the presence of a methyl group on the catalyst surface prevented glycerol adsorption during the reaction process,leading to the inhibition of undesired product *** SO_(3)H-KIT-6 catalyst could be reused up to three times,with only a 13%decrease in glycerol conversion being ***,the superior performance of the SO_(3)H-KIT-6 catalyst for di-GNBE production was also demonstrated compared with conventional solid acid catalysts including HZSM-5,H-beta zeolite,Amberlyst-35,and Amberlyst-36.

Objective:To evaluate the cytotoxic,apoptotic,mutagenic and immunomodulatory activities of Kaempferia galanga Linn.(KG)extract and ethyl-p-methoxycinnamate(EPMC)in ***:The present study investigated the cytotoxic[using the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphe nyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide test],apoptotic(using a mitochondrial membrane potential assay),mutagenic(using a micronucleus test)and immunomodulatory(using flow cytometry)activities of the ethanolic extract of KG and its bioactive component,EPMC,against two cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)cell lines,CL-6 and HuCCT1,and one normal human cell line,OUMS-36 T-1 ***:Both KG extract and EPMC exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against both CCA *** cytotoxic activity was supported by their concentration-dependent induction of ***-6 was most sensitive(3–4 fold)and selective to 5-fluorouracil(5-FU),compared with KG extract and EPMC[median half inhibiting concentration(IC50)and selectivity index(SI)were 23.01 lg/mL and 17.32;78.41 lg/mL and 4.44;100.76 lg/mL and 2.20,respectively for 5-FU *** extract ***].HuCCT1 was relatively more sensitive and selective to 5-FU and EPMC than KG extract[median IC50 and SI were 66.03 lg/mL and6.04;60.90 lg/mL and 3.65;156.60 lg/mL and 2.23,respectively for 5-FU *** *** extract].EPMC produced relatively potent cytotoxic activity against polymorphonuclear cells(IC50=92.20 lg/mL).KG extract and EPMC exhibited concentration-dependent mutagenic activity,as well as inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-a and ***:Considering cytotoxic,apoptotic,immunomodulatory and mutagenic activities,further development of KG as a drug candidate is likely to focus on the oral pharmaceutical formulation of a standardized KG extract rather than isolated compounds.

Effect of samarium and praseodymium addition on water gas shift performance of Co/CeO2 catalysts

The performance of Co supported over ceria and doped ceria(by Sm and Pr)catalysts towards the water gas shift reaction was studied for the removal of CO from syngas to produce high purity hydrogen for a fuel cell *** is found that 1%Co/Ce-5%Sm-O yields the highest catalytic performance towards this reaction compared with undoped-Sm and *** addition of Sm onto ceria support reveals a small crystallite size with high surface area and well dispersed cobalt on ceria ***,a presence of Sm increases the reducibility of cobalt species and surface *** positive effect of Sm on increasing the WGS activity of Co/CeO2 is because Sm contributes to the reduction of Ce^4+to Ce3+which gives rise to oxygen vacancies and facilitates the electron movement at the surface leading to an ease of surface reduction.

Buccal administration of mucoadhesive blend films saturated with propranolol loaded nanoparticles

The aims of this study were to prepare and characterize hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPMC)/polycarbophil(PC) mucoadhesive blend films saturated with propranolol hydrochloride(PNL)-loaded nanoparticles to improve permeability of drugs that undergo firstpass metabolism. An ionic cross-linking method and film casting technique was used to prepare nanoparticles and mucoadhesive blend films, respectively. Increasing concentrations of PNL(70, 80, 90 mg/film) in HPMC/PC blend films containing PNL-loaded nanoparticles(PN-films) and HPMC/PC blend films containing PNL(80 mg/film) without nanoparticles(PPfilms) were prepared to test swelling, mucoadhesiveness, release, permeation and physicochemical properties. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) images showed a partially smooth surface with a wrinkled occurrence and spherically shaped, well-dispersed nanoparticles on the surface of PN-films containing PNL 80 mg/film(PN-films-80). The size of the nanoparticles on the surface of PN-films-80 was around 100 nm, which was similar to the nanoparticle size observed using light scattering technique. The swelling index(SI)of all PN-films and PP-films increased greatly in the first period time(10–20 min) and reached swelling equilibrium at 20 min and 30 min, respectively. For the PN-films, the concentration of PNL influenced the mucoadhesive properties and tended to be higher when the amount of PNL increased. Immediate release of all blend film formulations was found in early time points(10–30 min). After 120 min, the release of PN-films-70 was lower than the other PNfilms. Permeation studies using porcine buccal mucosa showed that inclusion of nanoparticles in the films increased the permeability of PNL compared to PP-films. Therefore, buccal administration of mucoadhesive blend films containing PNL-loaded nanoparticles could be a promising approach for drugs that undergo first-pass metabolism.

Anti-lipogenic effect of Senna alata leaf extract in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

Objective: To examine the effect of Senna alata(S. alata) leaf extracts on the regulation of lipid metabolism in high-fat diet-induced obese ***: The obesity condition was induced in the male ICR mice by feeding them with high-fat diet(45 kcal% fat) for 12 weeks. At the 7th week of diet feeding, the obese mice were treated with the water extract of S. alata leaf at 250 and 500 mg/kg/day, respectively, that continued for six weeks. At the end of the treatment period, the biochemical parameters were determined. The hepatic histology and the gene and protein expressions were also ***: In comparison with the obese control mice, the mice treated with S. alata showed a significant reduction in the elevated blood glucose levels and a decrease in the serum insulin and leptin levels. A reduction in the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride,non-esterified fatty acid, and hepatic triglyceride levels were also observed. The histological examination of the obese mice treated with S. alata showed a reduced lipid accumulation in the liver tissue. Hepatic lipogenic gene expression showed that S. alata decreased the activity of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c, fatty acid synthase,and acetyl-Co A carboxylase. S. alata could suppress hepatic peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma(PPARg) protein. Moreover, the protein expression of PPARa in liver tissue was clearly increased by S. alata ***: The treatment with S. alata could decrease several parameters of impaired lipid metabolism in the obese mice by downregulating sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c and PPARg and upregulating PPARa. This study is the first report on the role of S. alata leaf extract in alleviating the abnormal lipid metabolism in obese conditions.

Objective:To evaluate the renoprotective effect of umbelliferone in high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic ***:We established a streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic model in male Wistar *** rats were fed with high-fat diet(45 kcal%lard fat)and injected with 35 mg/kg *** rats were treated with umbelliferone for 8 *** the end of the experimental period,the serum and kidney were used for measuring biochemical parameters,protein expression and histological ***:After 8-week treatment,umbelliferone decreased fasting plasma glucose,concentrations of malondialdehyde and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in the plasma and *** also significantly reduced serum creatinine,blood urea nitrogen,serum advanced glycation end products,as well as kidney weight in type 2 diabetic rats(P<0.05).Moreover,umbelliferone reduced the 24-h urine albumin,but increased 24-h urine creatinine excretion(P<0.05).In renal protein expression,umbelliferone decreased the levels of transforming growth factor-β1 and fibronectin while increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase(P<0.05).Renal histological examination revealed an enlarged glomerular size in diabetic rats,which was smaller in umbelliferone-treated diabetic ***:Umbelliferone alleviates renal dysfunction in diabetes via decreasing hyperglycemia,oxidative stress,inflammation and glycation.

Non-operative management for abdominal solidorgan injuries: A literature review

The philosophy of abdominal injury management is currently changing from mandatory exploration to selective non-operative management (NOM). The patient with hemodynamic stability and absence of peritonitis should be managed non-operatively. NOM has an overall success rate of 80%—90%. It also can reduce the rate of non-therapeutic abdominal exploration, preserve organ function, and has been defined as the safest choice in experienced centers. However, NOM carries a risk of missed injury such as hollow organ injury, diaphragm injury, and delayed hemorrhage. Adjunct therapies such as angiography with embolization, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with stenting, and percutaneous drainage could increase the chances of successful NOM. This article aims to describe the evolution of NOM and define its place in specific abdominal solid organ injury for the practitioner who faces this problem.

A validated HPTLC method for quantitative analysis of morin in Maclura cochinchinensis heartwood

Objective:The study was conducted to develop and validate a high performance thin-layer chromatography(HPTLC)-densitometric method for the quantitative analysis of morin in Maclura cochinchinensis heartwood collected from different locations in ***:HPTLC analysis was performed on an aluminium sheet of silica gel 60 F254 using toluene:ethyl acetate:formic acid(36:12:7,volume percent)as a mobile *** densitometric scanning was performed at the wavelength 410 *** method was validated according to ICH ***:The proposed HPTLC method showed acceptable validation *** content of morin in *** heartwood collected from eight different provinces in Thailand were in the ranges of1.53%-2.73%.Conclusion:The simple and sensitive HPTLC method was successfully developed and validated for determination of morin in *** *** proposed HPTLC method was found to be simple,fast and inexpensive,and can be used for the routine quality control of raw materials.
