Effect of constructing twin tunnels under a building supported by pile foundations in the sydney central business district

In congested cities such as sydney,competition for underground space escalates within the built environment because various assets require finite geotechnical strength and *** problems such as damage to buildings may develop when high-rise buildings on piled foundations are subject to ground movements as tunnels are *** paper focuses on the risks of tunneling beneath sydney’s Martin Place and how buildings are subject to additional loads caused by *** key objective of this study is to improve the understanding of tunnel-rock-pile interactions and to encourage sustainable development.A finite element model is developed to predict the interaction between tunnel construction and piled *** tunnel,rock,and pile components are studied separately and are then combined into a single *** ground model is based on the characteristics of Hawkesbury Sandstone and is developed through a desktop *** piles are designed using Australian Standards and observations of high-rise *** tunnel construction is modeled based on the construction sequence of a tunnel boring *** combining the components,a parametric study on the relationship between tunnel location,basements,and piles is *** findings,thus far,show that tunneling can increase the axial and flexural loads of piles,where the additional loading exceeds the structural capacity of some piles,especially those that are close to basement *** parametric study reveals a strong relationship between tunnel depth and lining stresses,while the relationship between tunnel depth and induced pile loads is less ***,the horizontal tunnel position relative to piles shows a stronger relationship with pile *** research into tunnel-rock-pile interactions is recommended,especially beneath basements,to substantiate the results of this study.

Tribological behaviour of fused deposition modelling printed short carbon fibre reinforced nylon composites with surface textures under dry and water lubricated conditions

Fused deposition modelling(FDM)printed short carbon fibre reinforced nylon(SCFRN)composites were *** friction and wear behaviour of printed materials were systematically investigated under both dry sliding and water lubricated *** results showed that with short fibre enhancements,the printed SCFRN achieved a lower friction coefficient and higher wear resistance than nylon under all tested ***,under water lubricated conditions,the printed SCFRN exhibited a low,stable friction coefficient due to the cooling and lubricating effects of ***,the specific wear rate of the printed specimens could be higher than that obtained under dry sliding conditions,especially when the load was relatively *** square textured surface was designed and created in the printing process to improve materials’tribological *** was found that with the textured surface,the wear resistance of the printed SCFRN was improved under dry sliding conditions,which could be explained by the debris collection or cleaning effect of surface ***,such a cleaning effect was less noticeable under lubricated conditions,as the liquid could clean the surface *** the other hand,surface textures could increase the surface area exposed to water,causing surface softening due to the higher water absorption *** a result,the samples having surface textures showed higher wear rates under lubricated *** work has provided new insights into designing wear resistant polymer materials using three-dimensional(3D)printing technologies,subjected to different sliding conditions.

Aflibercept for diabetic macular oedema： a Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

AIM： To evaluate the relative efficacy and safety of aflibercept for treatment of diabetic macular oedema （DMO）. METHODS： A comprehensive search in MEDLINE, CENTRAL and EMBASE was undertaken for randomized controlled trials （RCTs） comparing intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor （anti-VEGF） versus another treatment. Primary outcome measures were proportion of patients with at least 15 letters of gain or loss on a logMAR visual acuity chart, and change in best corrected visual acuity （BCVA） and central macular thickness （CMT） from baseline. Safety outcomes were rates of death, thromboembolic events and any systemic or ocular serious adverse events. The final search was performed on November 2017. RESULTS： Four RCTs were included. Only one trial compared efficacy and safety of aflibercept with bevacizumab and ranibizumab over 1 or 2y. Three trials were included for Meta-analysis comprising 661 patients （331 in the aflibercept, and 330 in the photocoagulation group）. Aflibercept was more efficacious compared to photocoagulation in the proportion of patients with at least 15 letters of improvement and worsening, and in improvement of BCVA and reduction in CMT at 1 or 2y. The safety estimates at 1 or 2y did not differ statistically. CONCLUSION： Aflibercept offers superior benefits over photocoagulation in improving and preserving vision, with no differences in safety. Further comparative effectiveness trials between aflibercept and other anti-VEGF agents will aid ophthalmologists in treatment decisions.

The frequency of wing damage in a migrating butterfly

The ability to fly is crucial for migratory ***,the accumulation of damage on the wings over time can affect survival,especially for species that travel long *** examined the frequency of irreversible wing damage in the migratory butterfly Vanessa cardui to explore the effect of wing structure on wing damage frequency,as well as the mechanisms that might mitigate wing *** exceptionally high migration rate driven by high precipitation levels in their larval habitats in the winter of 2018–2019 provided us with an excellent opportunity to collect data on the frequency of naturally occurring wing damage associated with long-distance *** images of 135 individuals of *** were collected and analyzed in *** results show that the hindwings experienced a greater frequency of damage than the ***,forewings experienced more severe damage on the lateral margin,whereas hindwings experienced more damage on the trailing *** frequency of wing margin damage was higher in the painted lady butterfly than in the migrating monarch butterfly and in the butterfly Pontia occidentalis following artificially induced wing *** results of this study could be used in future comparative studies of patterns of wing damage in butterflies and other *** studies are needed to clarify whether the strategies for coping with wing damage differ between migratory and nonmigratory species.

Modified smoothed particle hydrodynamics approach for modelling dynamic contact angle hysteresis

Dynamic wetting plays an important role in the physics of multiphase flow, and has a significant influence on many industrial and geotechnical applications. In this work, a modified smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model is employed to simulate surface tension, contact angle and dynamic wetting effects at meso-scale. The wetting and dewetting phenomena are simulated in a capillary tube, where the liquid particles are raised or withdrawn by a shifting substrate. The SPH model is modified by introducing a newly developed viscous force formulation at the liquid-solid interface to reproduce the rate-dependent behaviour of the moving contact line. Dynamic contact angle simulations with the interfacial viscous force are conducted to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of this new formulation. In addition, the influence of interfacial viscous forces with different magnitude on the contact angle dynamics is examined by empirical power-law correlations;the derived constants suggest that the dynamic contact angle changes monotonically with the interfacial viscous force. The simulation results are consistent with experimental observations and theoretical predictions, implying that the interfacial viscous force can be associated with the slip length of flow and the microscopic surface roughness. This work demonstrates that the modified SPH model can successfully account for the rate-dependent effects of a moving contact line, and can be used for realistic multiphase flow simulations under dynamic conditions.

Surface reconstruction with spherical harmonics and its application for single particle crushing simulations

Particle morphology has great influence on mechanical behaviour and hydro/thermal/electrical conductivities of granular *** reconstruction and mesh generation are critical to consider realistic particle shapes in various computational *** study adopts the combined finitediscrete element method(FDEM)to investigate single particle crushing *** shapes were reconstructed with spherical harmonic(SH)in both spherical and Cartesian coordinate ***,the reconstructed surface mesh qualities in two coordinate systems are investigated and *** the efficiency of the two SH systems in reconstructing star-like shapes is nearly identical,SH in Cartesian coordinate system can reconstruct non-star-like shapes with the help of surface ***,a higher triangular mesh quality is generated with spherical *** single particle crushing tests,the low mesh quality produces more fluctuations on load-displacement *** particles with more surficial mesh elements tend to have a lower contact stiffness due to more contact stress concentrations induced by complexity of morphology features and more volumetric tetrahedral *** fracture patterns are also influenced by mesh quality and density,e.g.a particle with fewer mesh elements has a simpler fragmentation *** study serves as an essential step towards modelling particle breakage using FDEM with surface mesh directly from SH reconstruction.

Engel Subalgebras of n-Lie Algebras

Engel subalgebras of finite-dimensional n-Lie algebras are shown to have similar properties to those of Lie algebras. Using these, it is shown that an n-Lie algebra, all of whose maximal subalgebras are ideals, is nilpotent. A primitive 2-soluble n-Lie algebra is shown to split over its minimal ideal, and all the complements to its minimal ideal are conjugate. A subalgebra is shown to be a Cartan subalgebra if and only if it is minimal Engel, provided that the field has sufficiently many elements. Cartan subalgebras are shown to have a property analogous to intravariance.
