Precise taxonomy and the chronostratigraphic calibration of the Middle Eocene Alveolina from Central Iran is here undertaken from the Chah-Talkh section of the southern Sabzevar region(Central Iran). We have identified Alveolina kieli, Alveolina stercusmuris and Alveolina nuttalli along with the new species Alveolina ozcani n. sp. that we include into the Alveolina elliptica group. We have also found Nummulites uroniensis, Nummulites obesus and Nummulites cf. verneuili and associated calcareous nannofossils that look reliable to make thoughtful correlations with the Shallow Benthic Zones(SBZ). The foraminiferal biostratigraphy suggests an assignment to the upper part of the lower Lutetian-lower part of the middle Lutetian,SBZ13(Middle Eocene), further strengthened through the identification of the calcareous nannofossil NP14b-NP15b or CNE8-CNE10 biozones, providing a solid correlation with the global stratigraphic standards.

A series of new metal-free organic dyes that contain donors with triphenylamine or its derivatives and tetrazole-based acceptors were synthesized and characterized by photophysical, electrochemical, and the- oretical computational methods. They were applied in nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells （DSSCs）. It is found that the introduction of diphenylamine units as antennas in the as-synthesized dyes could improve photo- voltaic performance compared with phenothiazine and carbazole units as antennas in DSSCs. The dye with （2H-tetrazol-5-yl） acrylonitrile electron acceptor also displayed the highest solar-to-electrical energy conver- sion efficiency.

In this research, the influence of several factors such as reaction time, catalyst weight, temperature and different solvents on dehydration reaction of fructose and glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural（HMF） was surveyed. Nanosphere Al-KCC-1 silica with fibrous morphology was manufactured and used as proficient and recyclable catalyst for this reaction. SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, EDX, elemental mapping, ICP and FT-IR spectroscopy methods were applied for characterization of the Al-KCC-1（molar ratio Si/Al = 5, 40） catalysts. 162℃ and 1 h are the best conditions for the fructose dehydration. Under this situation HMF yield and selectivity are 92.9% and 94.5% respectively and fructose conversion is 98.4%. Also 170℃ and 2 h are the best conditions for the glucose dehydration. In this situation HMF yield and selectivity are 39.0% and39.9% respectively and glucose conversion is 97.8%.

Spatial downscaling methods are widely used for the production of bioclimatic variables(e.g. temperature and precipitation) in studies related to species ecological niche and drainage basin management and planning. This study applied three different statistical methods, i.e. the moving window regression(MWR), nonparametric multiplicative regression(NPMR), and generalized linear model(GLM), to downscale the annual mean temperature(Bio1) and annual precipitation(Bio12) in central Iran from coarse scale(1 km × 1 km) to fine scale(250 m ×250 m). Elevation, aspect, distance from sea and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) were used as covariates to create downscaled bioclimatic variables. Model assessment was performed by comparing model outcomes with observational data from weather stations. Coefficients of determination(R2), bias, and root-mean-square error(RMSE) were used to evaluate models and covariates. The elevation could effectively justify the changes in bioclimatic factors related to temperature and precipitation. Allthree models could downscale the mean annual temperature data with similar R2, RMSE, and bias values. The MWR had the best performance and highest accuracy in downscaling annual precipitation(R2=0.70; RMSE=123.44). In general, the two nonparametric models, i.e. MWR and NPMR, can be reliably used for the downscaling of bioclimatic variables which have wide applications in species distribution modeling.

Anthropogenic activities have caused the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil *** of the soils significantly reduces environmental quality and affects human *** many recent studies,magnetic susceptibility measurements have been used for pollution *** objective of this research was to determine the spatial variability of magnetic properties and selected heavy metals and the effect of land use on their variability in the surface soils of the isfahan region,Central Iran.A total of 158 composite surface(0-5 cm) samples of calcareous soils were collected from an area of about 700 km 2,located along a cross-border transect from isfahan City to a steel plant,covering urban,industrial,agricultural,and uncultivated land *** of copper(Cu),zinc(Zn),lead(Pb),manganese(Mn),iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),chromium(Cr),and cobalt(Co) and magnetic parameters,magnetic susceptibility at low frequency(χlf),natural remanent magnetization(NRM),saturation isothermal remanent magnetization(SIRM),and isothermal remanent magnetization at the field of 100 mT(IRM 100mT) and the backfield of 100 mT(IRM 100mT),were measured in all the soil *** showed that magnetic susceptibility in the urban and industrial land topsoils(0-5 cm) samples was significantly higher than that in the agricultural and uncultivated land soils in the study *** of Cu,Zn,Pb,Mn,and Fe were positively correlated with magnetic properties(χlf,IRM 100mT,SIRM,IRM 100mT,and NRM),which could be attributed to their inputs from traffic emissions and industrial activities at the study *** and Cr concentrations showed significant negative correlations with magnetic *** significant correlation was found between Co concentration and magnetic *** Tomlinson pollution load index(PLI) showed significant correlation with the magnetic properties(χlf,IRM 100mT,SIRM,IRM 100mT,and NRM).The spatial distribution of the selected heavy metals and χlf in

Factors Affecting the Occurrence of Palygorskite in Central Iranian Soils Developed on Tertiary Sediments

Limited information is available on the distribution and origin of palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments as the major soil parent materials in central Iran and other Middle Eastern countries. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution and origin of palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments, and to identify the major soil properties that influence palygorskite distribution in the soils studied. Sixteen soil profiles developed on Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Oligocene-Miocene, Miocene and Pliocene sediments were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscopy. Physicochemical characteristics of the soils and sediments including particle size distribution, pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, gypsum, carbonates, and soluble Si, Ca and Mg were determined. The principal component analysis was used to establish the relationships between palygorskite and the physicochemical characteristics of the soils studied. Results showed that clay fraction of all the soils in the study area was dominated by palygorskite. The highest amount of palygorskite was found in horizons where simultaneous accumulation of both carbonates and gypsum occurred. Limited amount of palygorskite was found in salic and calcic horizons. Palygorskite seemed to be of eolian origin in the surface horizon of all the soils. Using principal component analysis, the soluble Mg/Ca ratio, pH, soluble Si and gypsum contents were identified as the most important factors affecting the distribution and genesis of palygorskite in the soils studied. Results might suggest the neoformation of palygorskite by precipitation from solutions in which evaporation fluxes were very high. However, palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments in central Iran seems to be of both inherited and pedogenic origins.

In this research work silica coating was produced on nickel substrates by a sol-gel process. In order to increase the rate of hydrolysis and to reduce the rate of polymerization several acid catalysts including nitric acid-hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid were add to silica sol. Conversely, in order to control the rate of hydrolysis and to increase the rate of polymerization, basic catalyst of ammonia and ammonia hydroxyl were introduced in to the solution. Nickel specimens of known surface roughness were chemically cleaned and prepared by dipping in the sols. In order to produce a suitable silica coating the drying and firing cycles were optimized on these substrates. The structure and uniformity of the coatings produced were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Coatings composition was determined using glow discharge optical spectroscopy and EDAX microanalysis. Experimental result showed that hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, ammonia and acetic acid - ammonia are suitable catalytic agents for silica coating formation on nickel type substrate.
