Objective:To screen the effect of sulphated galactopyran fraction isolated from Gracilaria opuntia (G. opuntia) (FM4) in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Methods:In vitro antioxidant assays of FM4 were estimated byDPPH,ABTS, hydroxyl free radical and Nitric oxide free radical ***4 was purified and characterized by1H-NMR spectra andFTIR as sulphated galactopyran. Diabetes was induced intraperitonially by single dose ofSTZ (55 mg/kg body weight).FM4 was administrated orally (80, 100, 125 mg/kgBW) to diabetic rats for 60 days. The enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), lipid peroxidase (LPx), glutathione reduced (GSH), vitamin-C (VIT-C) and vitamin-E (VIT-E) levels were estimated. Glibenclamide was used as standard drug. Results:Our results demonstrated that the aqueous extract ofG. opuntia possess free radical scavenging activity. During FM4 fraction treatment (100 mg/kgBW), theSOD,GPx,CAT,GST, GSH,VIT-C and VIT-E levels were significantly (P < 0.05) increased, and theLPx levels were decreased in different organs such as liver, kidney, brain and pancreas of diabetic rats. Conclusions: The sulphated galactopyran fraction of the marine macroalgae (G. opuntia) possesses the antioxidant activity which might help in the prevention of oxidative damage that occurs during diabetes.

Traditional medicine (TM) plays an inevitable role in drug discovery and development. Most of the therapeutically useful molecules used in the present day are inspired from TM. Herbal drugs are the oldest forms of medicines used for the treatment of various ailments and the TM of every country has a long history of their usage. To develop more data on their quality, safety, and efficacy, so also to improve the consumer’s need of modern days several thrust areas of research are to be focused on the development of TM. Based on the above concept, a paradigm shift is required for the revitalization of TM. These facts along with the modern scientific approaches, molecular tools, and strategies make it necessary for TM to be revitalized. Confluencing several strategies with the technological and scientific developments including pharmacogenomics, nutrigenomics, system biology, and related approaches, the scientific potential of TM can be explored further with international coordination and collaborations.

Influence of fatty acids in edible oils on lutein micellization and permeation in a simulated digestion model

Lutein is a nutraceutical compound that promotes human eye health and prevents neurodegenerative *** oral bioavailability of lutein is affected by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors in the *** hydrophobicity of the compound is further challenging,its lipophilicity can be utilized to micellize and thereby improve its oral ***,available data on the effects of dietary fats on lutein micellization and permeation is limited and needs further *** this study,the influence of 17 carrier type edible oils on lutein micellization and permeation,was investigated in a simulated digestion *** overall effectiveness of these oils to permeate micellized lutein was attributed to its Fatty Acid(FA)*** 94%of the edible oils exhibited a positive influence on the permeation of micellized lutein,the micellization and permeation efficiency of these oils were significantly(p≤0.05)modulated by the saturation of FA in the order Saturated(SFA)>Mono-Unsaturated(MUFA)>Poly-Unsaturated(PUFA).The highest apparent permeability coefficient was exhibited by lutein micellized in ghee(3.01×10^(-6) cm/s)and butter(2.93×10^(-6) cm/s),which was 1.28 and 1.24 folds higher than lutein alone(2.35×10^(-6) cm/s)*** MUFA rich olive oil and PUFA rich flaxseed oil improved lutein permeation by 1.19(2.80×10^(-6) cm/s)and 1.14 folds(2.69×10^(-6) cm/s)*** study is the first to report the influence of saturated fatty acids on micellization and permeation of ***,the outcomes of this study offer the field of lutein delivery systems a fresh perspective.

MgO优异的发射和保护性能会由于水吸附作用形成Mg（OH）2而变差。为了证明这一点，实验首先采用Sol-gel法合成了纯净的MgO粉末：将硝酸镁六水合物和草酸溶解在乙醇中形成凝胶体，接着将该凝胶体在100℃时烘24h以形成草酸镁，然后升温到600℃使之裂解，将其磨碎，再使用240mesh筛分，最后再在1000℃时烧结2h，形成MgO。该法制成的MgO在气压为10^-5mbar的气氛中通过电子束蒸发到玻璃衬底上形成薄膜。以上方法制成的MgO薄膜和在450℃直接退火的MgO薄膜在以下几点做了对比：（a）生长过程和结构；（b）表面形貌；（c）透光度；（d）OH键。以上对比结果表明前者：（i）具有fcc结构，其晶格常数a为4．216±0．005A，（ii）具有在〈100〉和〈110〉之间的择优取向。另外前者还有以下特征：（i）表面形貌呈锥柱状、（ii）可视光范围的高透光度（〉88-92％）、（iii）无OH键。此外，如果MgO薄膜的晶粒取向{100}和{110}之类的中性面，那么其水合作用就可以得到有效的控制。
