Unconfined compressive strength and failure behaviour of completely weathered granite from a fault zone

Understanding the strength characteristics and deformation behaviour of the tunnel surrounding rock in a fault zone is significant for tunnel stability evaluation.In this study,a series of unconfined compression tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical characteristics and failure behaviour of completely weathered granite(CWG)from a fault zone,considering with height-diameter(h/d)ratio,dry densities(ρd)and moisture contents(ω).Based on the experimental results,a regression mathematical model of unconfined compressive strength(UCS)for CWG was developed using the Multiple Nonlinear Regression method(MNLR).The research results indicated that the UCS of the specimen with a h/d ratio of 0.6 decreased with the increase ofω.When the h/d ratio increased to 1.0,the UCS increasedωwith up to 10.5%and then decreased.Increasingρd is conducive to the improvement of the UCS at anyω.The deformation and rupture process as well as final failure modes of the specimen are controlled by h/d ratio,ρd andω,and the h/d ratio is the dominant factor affecting the final failure mode,followed byωandρd.The specimens with different h/d ratio exhibited completely different fracture mode,i.e.,typical splitting failure(h/d=0.6)and shear failure(h/d=1.0).By comparing the experimental results,this regression model for predicting UCS is accurate and reliable,and the h/d ratio is the dominant factor affecting the UCS of CWG,followed byρd and thenω.These findings provide important references for maintenance of the tunnel crossing other fault fractured zones,especially at low confining pressure or unconfined condition.

Fe-N_(x) sites coupled with core-shell FeS@C nanoparticles to boost the oxygen catalysis for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

The development of efficient single-atom catalysts(SACs) for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)remains a formidable challenge,primarily due to the symmetric charge distribution of metal singleatom sites(M-N_(4)).To address such issue,herein,Fe-N_(x) sites coupled synergistic catalysts fabrication strategy is presented to break the uniform electronic distribution,thus enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity.Precisely,atomically dispersed Fe-N_(x) sites supported on N/S-doped mesoporous carbon(NSC)coupled with FeS@C core-shell nanoparticles(FAS-NSC@950) is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal reaction and subsequent pyrolysis.Due to the presence of an in situ-grown conductive graphitic layer(shell),the FeS nanoparticles(core) effectively adjust the electronic structure of single-atom Fe sites and facilitate the ORR kinetics via short/long-range coupling interactions.Consequently,FAS-NSC@950displays a more positive half-wave potential(E_(1/2)) of 0.871 V with a significantly boosted ORR kinetics(Tafel slope=52.2 mV dec^(-1)),outpacing the commercial Pt/C(E_(1/2)=0.84 V and Tafel slope=54.6 mV dec^(-1)).As a bifunctional electrocatalyst,it displays a smaller bifunctional activity parameter(ΔE) of 0.673 V,surpassing the Pt/C-RuO_(2) combination(ΔE=0.724 V).Besides,the FAS-NSC@950-based zincair battery(ZAB) displays superior power density,specific capacity,and long-term cycling performance to the Pt/C-Ir/C-based ZAB.This work significantly contributes to the field by offering a promising strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of SACs for ORR,with potential implications for energy conversion and storage technologies.

A grouping strategy for reinforcement learning-based collective yawcontrol of wind farms

Reinforcement learning(RL)algorithms are expected to become the next generation of wind farm control methods.However,as wind farms continue to grow in size,the computational complexity of collective wind farm control will exponentially increase with the growth of action and state spaces,limiting its potential in practical applications.In this Letter,we employ a RL-based wind farm control approach with multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient to optimize the yaw manoeuvre of grouped wind turbines in wind farms.To reduce the computational complexity,the turbines in the wind farm are grouped according to the strength of the wake interaction.Meanwhile,to improve the control efficiency,each subgroup is treated as a whole and controlled by a single agent.Optimized results show that the proposed method can not only increase the power production of the wind farm but also significantly improve the control efficiency.

CMIP 6 models simulation of the connection between North/South Pacific Meridional Mode and ENSO

The subtropical North and South Pacific Meridional Modes(NPMM and SPMM)are well known precursors of El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO).However,relationship between them is not constant.In the early 1980,the relationship experienced an interdecadal transition.Changes in this connection can be attributed mainly to the phase change of the Pacific decadal oscillation(PDO).During the positive phase of PDO,a shallower thermocline in the central Pacific is responsible for the stronger trade wind charging(TWC)mechanism,which leads to a stronger equatorial subsurface temperature evolution.This dynamic process strengthens the connection between NPMM and ENSO.Associated with the negative phase of PDO,a shallower thermocline over southeastern Pacific allows an enhanced wind-evaporation-SST(WES)feedback,strengthening the connection between SPMM and ENSO.Using 35 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)models,we examined the NPMM/SPMM performance and its connection with ENSO in the historical runs.The great majority of CMIP6 models can reproduce the pattern of NPMM and SPMM well,but they reveal discrepant ENSO and NPMM/SPMM relationship.The intermodal uncertainty for the connection of NPMM-ENSO is due to different TWC mechanism.A stronger TWC mechanism will enhance NPMM forcing.For SPMM,few models can simulate a good relationship with ENSO.The intermodel spread in the relationship of SPMM and ENSO owing to SST bias in the southeastern Pacific,as WES feedback is stronger when the southeastern Pacific is warmer.

From risk control to resilience: developments and trends of urban roads designed as surface flood passages to cope with extreme storms

Urban roads can be designated as surface flood passages to transport excess runoff during extreme storms, thereby preventing local flooding, which is known as the major drainage system. However, this practice poses significant risks, including human loss and property damage, due to the high flow rate and velocity carried by roads. Moreover, urban roads with low flood-resilience may significantly hamper the transportation function during severe storms, leading to dysfunction of the city. Therefore, there is an urgent need to transform risk-oriented flood passages into resilient urban road-based flood passages. This paper presents a systematic review of existing methodologies in designing a road network-based flood passage system, along with the discussion of new technologies to enhance system resilience. The study also addresses current knowledge gaps and future directions. The results indicate that flood management measures based on the urban road network should integrate accessibility assessment, lifeline and emergency planning to ensure human well-being outcomes. Furthermore, the special needs and features of vulnerable groups must be taken into serious consideration during the planning stage. In addition, a data-driven approach is recommended to facilitate real-time management and evaluate future works.

Bubble nucleation in the two-flavor quark-meson model

We investigate the dynamics of a first-order quark-hadron transition via homogeneous thermal nucleation in the two-flavor quark-meson model.The contribution of the fermionic vacuum loop in the effective thermodynamics potential and phase diagram,together with the location of the critical endpoint(CEP),is obtained in the temperature and chemical potential plane.For weak and strong first-order phase transitions,by taking the temperature as a variable,the critical bubble profiles,evolutions of the surface tension,and saddle-point action in the presence of a nucleation bubble are numerically calculated in detail when fixing the chemical potentials atμ=306 MeV andμ=309 MeV.Our results show that the system could be trapped in the metastable state for a long time as long as the temperature is between the metastable region characterized by the up and low spinodal lines.Moreover,the surface tension at criticality will rise to approximately 4 MeV/fm2 when the chemical potential is very high.Such a small surface tension value would favor a mixed phase in the cores of compact stars and may have an important implication in astrophysics.

Effect of different metal element substitution on microstructural and comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of Ti0.9Zr0.1Mn0.95Cr0.7V0.2M0.15（M=Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Mo） alloy

Hydrogen is now being used as a renewable clean energy carrier.One of the main issues with the application of hydrogen energy is a shortage of security and efficient hydrogen storage technology.TiMn-based alloys are considered promising hydrogen storage materials,but their comprehensive hydrogen storage properties and cyclic stable performance limit their further practical application.The hydrogen storage properties of alloys can be enhanced by substituting transition metal elements.Therefore,the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of the Ti0.9Zr0.1Mn0.95Cr0.7V0.2M0.15（M=Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Mo） alloys was systematically investigated according to the Mn element on the B side is partially replaced by variety of transition metal elements.The M=Ni alloy,which showed the highest hydrogen storage capacity among the group of alloys,was used to explore cycle stability.The plateau pressures of the series alloys decreased in order,Fe>Co>Ni>Cu>Mo.Aspects of hydrogen absorption kinetics,all of the alloys can reach full hydrogen absorption saturation within 400 s at 303 K.The Ti0.9Zr0.1Mn0.95Cr0.7V0.2Mo0.15alloy possessed the fastest hydrogen absorption kinetic rate(t0.9=65 s) and the smallest hysteresis factor.This suggests that the substitution of Mo elements is effective in improving the hysteresis of the Laves phase alloys.Among the series of alloys,the M=Ni alloy exhibited the best overall hydrogen storage performance,which hydrogen storage capacity can reach 1.81 wt% and 97% of its capacity is kept after 100 cycles.

A stable staggered-grid finite-difference scheme for acoustic modeling beyond conventional stability limit

Staggered-grid finite-difference(SGFD)schemes have been widely used in acoustic wave modeling for geophysical problems.Many improved methods are proposed to enhance the accuracy of numerical modeling.However,these methods are inevitably limited by the maximum Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy(CFL)numbers,making them unstable when modeling with large time sampling intervals or small grid spacings.To solve this problem,we extend a stable SGFD scheme by controlling SGFD dispersion relations and maximizing the maximum CFL numbers.First,to improve modeling stability,we minimize the error between the FD dispersion relation and the exact relation in the given wave-number region,and make the FD dispersion approach a given function outside the given wave-number area,thus breaking the conventional limits of the maximum CFL number.Second,to obtain high modeling accuracy,we use the SGFD scheme based on the Remez algorithm to compute the FD coefficients.In addition,the hybrid absorbing boundary condition is adopted to suppress boundary reflections and we find a suitable weighting coefficient for the proposed scheme.Theoretical derivation and numerical modeling demonstrate that the proposed scheme can maintain high accuracy in the modeling process and the value of the maximum CFL number of the proposed scheme can exceed that of the conventional SGFD scheme when adopting a small maximum effective wavenumber,indicating that the proposed scheme improves stability during the modeling.

Exploring the Effect of Plasticity on the Phase Imaging of TM-AFM Through Molecular Dynamics Simulations

In the tapping-mode atomic force microscope(TM-AFM),the probe tip continuously taps the sample surface,which may cause plastic deformation of the sample and result in energy dissipation.The energy dissipation of the probe is closely related to the scanned phase image.To quantify the energy dissipation due to plastic indentations of the sample,this study utilized a combination of molecular dynamics(MD)simulations and experiments on single-crystal copper samples,including multiple nano-indentation tests.The energy dissipation of the probe due to the plastic deformation of the sample was calculated by integrating the hysteresis curve of the indentation depth versus the force applied to the indenter.The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.Both sets of results have demonstrated that the plastic energy dissipation decreases as the number of indentations increases,and eventually the energy of the probe tends to stabilize.This equilibrium energy dissipation is associated with other dissipation mechanisms.Furthermore,it was observed that,after hundreds of taps,the dissipated energy of plastic deformation could be ignored,implying that the scanned image may not reflect the plasticity information of the sample after multiple taps of the probe on the sample surface for scanning.

Prediction of ball-on-plate friction and wear by ANN with data-driven optimization

For training artificial neural network(ANN),big data either generated by machine or measured from experiments are used as input to"learn"the unspecified functions defining the ANN.The experimental data are fed directly into the optimizer allowing training to be performed according to a predefined loss function.To predict sliding friction and wear at mixed lubrication conditions,in this study a specific ANN structure was so designed that deep learning algorithms and data-driven optimization models can be used.Experimental ball-on-plate friction and wear data were analyzed using the specific training procedure to optimize the weights and biases incorporated into the neural layers of the ANN,and only two independent experimental data sets were used during the ANN optimization procedure.After the training procedure,the ANN is capable to predict the contact and hydrodynamic pressure by adapting the output data according to the tribological condition implemented in the optimization algorithm.
