Partial anammox achieved in full scale biofilm process for typical domestic wastewater treatment

The slow initiation of anammox for treating typical domestic wastewater and the relatively high footprint of wastewater treatment infrastructures are major concerns for practical wastewater treatment ***,a 300 m^(3)/d hybrid biofilm reactor(HBR)process was developed and operated with a short hydraulic retention time(HRT)of 8 *** analysis of the bacterial community demonstrated that anammox were enriched in the anoxic zone of the HBR *** percentage abundance of Candidatus Brocadia in the total bacterial community of the anoxic zone increased from 0 at Day 1 to 0.33%at Day 130 and then to 2.89%at Day *** upon the activity of anammox bacteria,the removal of ammonia nitrogen(NH_(4)^(+)-N)in the anoxic zone was approximately 15%.This showed that the nitrogen transformation pathway was enhanced in the HBR system through partial anammox process in the anoxic *** final effluent contained 12 mg/L chemical oxygen demand(COD),0.662 mg/L NH_(4)^(+)-N,7.2 mg/L total nitrogen(TN),and 6 mg/L SS,indicating the effectiveness of the HBR process for treating real domestic wastewater.

能在较高海拔生长的原生稻蕴藏优质基因和遗传特性，但近年来受到杂交稻和普通水稻普遍推广的挤压，其分布状况堪忧，因此无论从种质资源保护角度还是从经济价值角度对原生稻开展保护均具有重要意义。文章引入利益相关者理论，借助包含地方政府、企业或合作社、农户的三方演化博弈模型开展分析，对元江县开展原生稻保护工作提出建议，并为其他地区农作物品种生物多样性和粮农遗传资源保护与可持续利用提供参考。研究结果表明，短期内原生稻的保护亟需地方政府的鼓励支持、宣传引导。政府对企业和农户的补贴力度和收购、种植原生稻的积极性之间有密切关系。政府对企业补贴系数较小时，企业存在趋向“不收购”；政府对企业的补贴系数越高，企业达到演化稳定状态的速度越快，而政府与农户达到演化稳定状态的速度反而减慢。政府对农户的补贴系数越大，农户、企业与合作社达到演化稳定状态的速度越快，政府达到演化稳定状态的速度反而减慢；政府对农户的补贴系数较大时可能会产生农户趋向“不种植”、政府趋向“不鼓励”的情况。因此，政府在决策过程中要仔细权衡给予企业、合作社和农户的补贴，并结合地方财政状况和原生稻恢复种植、原位保护的现状。

Weighted individual-resource networks in prey–predator systems: the role of prey availability on the emergence of modular structures

Ecological networks,usually depicting interactions among species,have been recently down-scaled to the individual level,permitting description of patterns of inter-individual resource variation that are usually hindered at the species *** diet theory(ODT)models,applied to prey–predator systems,predict different patterns of nestedness and modularity in the network,depending on the available resources and intra-specific *** effect of resource availability on the emergence of networks structures,and ODT framework,has not yet fully been ***,we analyzed the structural patterns of individual-resource networks in 3 species of Mediterranean salamanders,in relation to changes in prey *** used weighted individual-resource network metrics to interpret the observed patterns,according to 3 ODT *** found significant nestedness recurring in our study system,indicating that both selective and opportunistic individuals occur in the same *** diversity,rather than abundance,was apparently related to inter-individual resource variation and promoted the emergence of significant modularity within all *** observed patterns of nestedness and modularity,together with the variation in resource diversity and intra-specific competition,are in agreement with the distinct preferences model of *** findings suggest that in the focal prey–predator systems,individuals were able to perceive changes in prey diversity and to exploit in different ways the variations in composition of available resources,shifting their diet assembly rules *** findings also confirm that the use of weighted individual-resource networks,in prey–predator systems,allows to disclose dynamics that are masked at the species or population level.

Old-growth forests play a key-role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentrations by storing large CO_(2)amounts in biomass and soil over *** quantifies the carbon pool into different forest compartments in three Mediterranean old-growth forests of Southern Italy populated by Pinus laricio,Fagus sylvatica and Abies *** carbon pools have been assessed per compartment,i.e.,living trees,dead wood,litterfall(foliar and woody),roots and 0-20 cm topsoil,combining the whole old-growth forest mass,(i.e.,using tree allometric relationships,deadwood factor conversions,root-to-shoot ratios,litterfall and soil samplings) by the respective organic carbon *** results show the considerable capacity of these forest ecosystems in storing CO_(2)in biomass and soil,with carbon pool values ranging from 532.2to 596.5 Mg C *** trees and 0-20 cm topsoil had larger carbon pool,contributing 53.0 and 22.1%,*** most cases,organic carbon concentration was higher(more than 60%) than the average carbon conversion rate of 50%,especially in living trees,deadwood,and woody *** study contributes further scientific evidence of the capacity of old-growth forests in storing CO_(2)in their different compartments,with special evidence on tree biomass,litterfall and mineral soil,thereby highlighting the key role of old-growth forests within the challenge of climate change mitigation.

Over the past few years,it is observed an increased interest for oleaginous microorganisms in the perspective to produce microbial oils of great commercial interest through the consumption of low/zero cost *** this paper,the physiology of the fungus Umbelopsis isabellina growing on blends of glycerol and glucose was *** all experiments the fungus completely consumed glucose and produced satisfactory quantities of biomass containing reserve lipids in high ***,glycerol concentration in the growth medium was negatively correlated to glucose assimilation rate,mainly during the balanced-growth ***,at high initial concentrations,glycerol was partially consumed and seemed to contribute positively to the suppression of lipid *** the discovery of this complex regulatory mechanism regarding glucose and glycerol co-assimilation,the activity of three key-enzymes namely aldolase,glycerol kinase and glycerol dehydrogenase,which are implicated in glycerol and glucose assimilation,was *** experiments revealed a clear preference of the fungus for glucose over *** the other hand,storage polysaccharides are degraded instead of storage lipid at the late oleaginous phase for maintenance *** new biochemical features will enable the design of appropriate growth media for the co-fermentation of these two substrates by *** with the aim to maximize lipid accumulation.

Background:Knowledge about the niche overlap among wild species and domestic cattle is helpful to conserve and manage *** assessed the habitat niche breadth and overlap of sympatrically living spotted deer(Axis axis)and domestic cattle with swamp deer(Cervus duvaucelii)in Shuklaphanta National Park,Nepal during the dry season to explore the possibility of interspecific competition by studying the habitat use by these *** assumption was made that the presence of pellets is proof of habitat used by ***:Grids of 2 km×2 km have four subgrids,each with four sample plots,making a total of 16 plots(20 m×20 m)in each *** size of each sub-grid was 200 m×200 m and they were placed randomly inside the grid but at least 1 km apart from one *** data was collected in a 96 plots in ***’s niche breadth and Morisita’s overlap index were calculated to determine the niche breadth and the habitat overlap,***:The Levin’s measure of niche breadth suggested that spotted deer had the highest acclimatization with an index value of 0.94,followed by domestic cattle at 0.50,and swamp deer at 0.33 in our study ***,our findings supported the evidence that spotted deer are habitat generalists,whereas swamp deer are habitat *** swamp deer had lower niche breadth and more overlap with domestic ***:Our study showed the least niche breadth of swamp deer in comparison to spotted deer and domestic *** domestic cattle had the highest and least niche overlap with spotted deer and swamp deer,respectively,in terms of habitat *** study suggests that domestic cattle grazing should be stopped,and grassland management should be carried out for the benefit of *** studies should be conducted,including different seasons and places,prior to appropriate habitat *** addition,further studies are needed to quantify the extent of interspecific competition by incorporating more species.

The concept of foraging niche provides an insight into habitat use and dietary information of *** intraspecific variation in foraging niche and trophic level is critical to the understanding of the species response to environmental changes during the process of range expansion,as well as the habitat management for conservation of threatened *** stable isotopic values of eggshell membranes(δ;C andδ;N),we examined whether there are differences in habitat use,trophic level,foraging niche width between the new and old breeding habitats(plains ***)of wild Crested Ibis(Nipponia nippon)in the early breeding *** Ibis exhibited high variability in bothδ;C andδ;N values,δ;C andδ;N varied as a function of habitat *** breeding in plains had significantly higherδ;C but lowerδ;N values compared to the birds breeding in ***δ;N suggested that individuals in mountains consumed a great proportion of higher trophic level prey species in the early breeding ***,the isotopic niches were distinctly different in positions and showed small overlap between the two habitat *** niche width was wider in old habitat than in the expanded new *** results demonstrated that the wild Crested Ibis had a high intraspecific variation in habitat uses and trophic levels in the early breeding season,and they could be divided into mountain and plain groups based on their different foraging *** difference inδ;N and niche width revealed that high trophic level food resources might be insufficient in *** findings stressed the importance of protecting foraging grounds in mountains and the necessity of improving foraging grounds in plains during winter and *** study highlights the feasibility of investigating intraspecific variation in foraging ecology of birds through non-invasive isotopes of eggshell *** foraging niche variation gives us an insight into the food resource diversity

Tropical mountain ranges shape the structure of tree communities and promote highly diverse natural ***“Bosque Protector Chong on-Colonche”(BPCC),an 86,000-ha mountain formation situated on the coast of Ecuador,is biogeographically important for the region by connecting floristic elements of the wet Choco and the dry Tumbesian *** understanding of the factors that model tree and palm diversity and distribution in this mountain range are *** measured and identified all trees and palms(DBH≥10 cm)in 289 plots of0.2 ha,distributed throughout *** used generalized linear models to explain the relationship between forest diversity and structure and climatic variables(temperature,rain,aridity),and *** then used cluster and non-metric multidimensional scale(NMDS)analyses to search for distinct forest communities within the *** partition(varpart)was used to determine which predictor variables best explained these distinct forest communities.A species indicator analysis identified the species most likely to define these distinct forest ***,we carried out a niche modeling approach to identify the potential distribution of these forest communities within *** total,we identified 220 tree and palm species in our *** average number of species per plot was 17.8±5.8,ranging from 3 to 40 *** methods sorted the 289study plots into six different forest communities,three communities in the dry forest and three in the semi-humid Garúa *** and temperature,but not altitude or aridity,explained floristic *** results emphasize the high but little cataloged diversity in the lowland mountain rainforests of coastal Ecuador.

Assessment of the spatial extent of permafrost in the Upper Indus Basin(UIB)

Climate change differentially influences the frozen ground,a major dynamic component of the cryosphere,on a local and regional *** the warming climate with pronounced effects reported at higher altitudes,the characterization of the frozen ground is very important in the Upper Indus Basin(UIB),an important and critical region with respect to climate and hydro-glaciological *** this study,the efficiency and reliability of the surface frost number model are assessed in delineating the spatial extent of different classes of frozen ground in the *** daily MODIS land surface temperature(LST)with ground surface temperature(GST)and surface geomorphological expressions as ground validation datasets are used jointly in efficiently determining the extent of different classes of frozen ground(continuous and discontinuous permafrost and seasonal frost).The LST and GST resonate with each other in the annual cycle of temperature variation,however,with mean annual LST exhibiting an offset(cold bias)of 5 to 7℃relative to mean *** study shows that the highest permafrost extent is observed in areas where the lowest thinning rates of glacier ice are reported and vice *** surface frost number model categorizes an area of 38%±3%and 15%±3%in the UIB as permafrost and seasonal frost,*** on the altitude model,the lower limit of alpine permafrost is approximated at a mean altitude of 4919±590 m *** the *** present study acts as preliminary work in the data sparse and inaccessible regions of the UIB in characterizing the frozen and unfrozen ground and may act as a promising input data source in glaciohydro-meteorological models for the Himalaya and *** addition,the study also underlines the consideration of this derelict cryospheric climatic variable in defining and accounting for the sustainable development of socio-economic systems through its intricate ramification on agricultural activity,landscape stability and infrastruc
