Amyloid-beta peptide and tau protein crosstalk in Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that accounts for most of the 50-million dementia cases worldwide in 2018.A large amount of evidence supports the amyloid cascade hypothesis,which states that amyloid-beta accumulation triggers tau hyperphosphorylation and aggregation in form of neurofibrillary tangles,and these aggregates lead to inflammation,synaptic impairment,neuronal loss,and thus to cognitive decline and behavioral *** poor correlation found between cognitive decline and amyloid plaques,have led the scientific community to question whether amyloid-beta accumulation is actually triggering neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s *** occurrence of tau neurofibrillary tangles better correlates to neuronal loss and clinical symptoms and,although amyloid-beta may initiate the cascade of events,tau impairment is likely the effector molecule of ***,it has been shown that amyloid-beta and tau cooperatively work to impair transcription of genes involved in synaptic function and,more importantly,that downregulation of tau partially reverses transcriptional *** mounting evidence points to an interplay between amyloid-beta and tau,some factors could independently affect both ***,the dual pathway hypothesis,which states that there are common upstream triggers causing both amyloid-beta and tau abnormalities has been *** others,the immune system seems to be strongly involved in amyloid-beta and tau *** factors,as the apolipoprotein Eε4 isoform has been suggested to act as a link between amyloid-beta and tau ***,amyloid-beta-immunotherapy reduces not only amyloid-beta but also tau levels in animal models and in clinical ***,it has been shown that tau-immunotherapy also reduces amyloid-beta ***,even though amyloid-beta immunotherapy is more advanced than tau-immunotherapy,combined amyloid-beta and tau-directed therapie

BACKGROUND Neuropsychiatric symptoms(NPS)have been insufficiently examined in persons with aphasia(PWA)because most previous studies exclude participants with language and communication *** To report a two-part study consisting of a literature review and an observational study on NPS in post-stroke *** Study 1 reviewed articles obtained from PubMed,PsycINFO,Google Scholar and Cochrane databases after cross-referencing key words of post-stroke aphasia to NPS and *** 2 examined language deficits and activities of daily living in 20 PWA(median age:58,range:28-65 years;13 men)with the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised and the Barthel Index,*** of these 20 PWA were proxy-evaluated with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and domain-specific scales,including the Stroke Aphasia depression Questionnaire-10 item version and the Starkstein Apathy *** addition,an adapted version of the Hospital Anxiety and depression Scale was directly administered to the PWA *** observational study is based on the baseline assessment of an intervention clinical trial(EudraCT:2017-002858-36;*** identifier:NCT04134416).RESULTS The literature review revealed a broad spectrum of NPS in PWA,including depression,anxiety,apathy,agitation/aggression,eating and sleep disorders,psychosis,and hypomania/*** findings alert to the need for improving assessment and treatment approaches of NPS taking into consideration their frequent occurrence in *** 2 showed that the 20 participants had mild-to-moderate aphasia severity and were functionally independent.A wide range of comorbid NPS was found in the post-stroke aphasic population(median number of NPS:5,range:1-8).The majority of PWA(75%)had depressive symptoms,followed by agitation/aggression(70%),irritability(70%),anxiety(65%)and appetite/eating symptoms(65%).Half of them also presented symptoms of apathy,whereas euphoria and psychotic symptoms were rare(5%).Domain

determination of Soil Aggregate Porosity Using the Modified Water Saturation Method

The need to find a simple method for measuring soil aggregate porosity (φ) is justified by the growing interest of researchers in this important parameter of soil physical status. The aim of this study was to present a simple method (AM) for estimating the total 0 of a single soil aggregate. In this case, soil aggregate 0 was calculated as the quotient between the pore volume, estimated from the weight of the aggregate saturated with ethanol, and the total volume (V T ) of aggregate, calculated from the particle density and dry aggregate weight. The V T estimated with AM was compared with the corresponding volume measured with the photogrammetry (PHM) technique using soil aggregates of 8–16 mm in diameter and collected from three different tillage systems: conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no tillage (NT). Next, the AM was used to study the effects of the tillage system on soil aggregate φ. Although a strong relationship ( R 2 = 0.99, P ded to underestimate aggregate V T with an average deviation of 2.85%. This difference may be due to ethanol evaporation during the first 10 s before the ethanol-saturated aggregate was weighed. The use of AM to determine the effects of different tillage systems on aggregate φ showed that this method was sensitive to detect significant differences among the tillage treatments. The results showed that AM could be an accurate, simple, and inexpensive alternative to estimate φ of a single soil aggregate.

On a Classical Theorem on the Diameter and Minimum degree of a Graph

In this work, we obtain good upper bounds for the diameter of any graph in terms of its minimum degree and its order, improving a classical theorem due to Erdos, Pach, Pollack and Tuza. We use these bounds in order to study hyperbolic graphs （in the Gromov sense）. To compute the hyperbolicity constant is an almost intractable problem, thus it is natural to try to bound it in terms of some parameters of the graph. Let H（n, δ0） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and minimum degree 50, and J（n, Δ） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and maximum degree A. We study the four following extremal problems on graphs： a（n,δ0） = min{δ（G）｜ G ∈H（n, δ0）}, b（n, δ0） =- max{δ（G）｜ e ∈H（n, δ0）}, α（n, Δ） = min{δ（G） [ G ∈ J（n, Δ）} and β（n,Δ） = max{δ（G） ] G∈Π（n,Δ）}. In particular, we obtain bounds for b（n, δ0） and we compute the precise value of a（n, δ0）, α（n, Δ） and w（n, Δ） for all values of n, r0 and A, respectively.

Efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid salts distilled from coconut oil against two enteric pathogen challenges in weanling piglets

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(MCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of MCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pded(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEC F4,the IEL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

Breeding effects on the genotype×environment interaction for yield of durum wheat grown after the Green Revolution:The case of spain

This study evaluates the changes caused by breeding in the genotype by environment(G×E)interaction of the durum wheat varieties most widely cultivated in spain after the Green Revolution.A set of 12 cultivars was tested in 27 environments,which are understood as the combination of different sites,years,and treatments(water regime and planting dates),representative of the durum wheat growing conditions in spain with average grain yields(GY)ranging between 2.8 and 9.1 Mg ha^-*** most important environmental factors affecting the G×E interaction for yield were themaximum and the mean temperature during the entire crop *** improvement in genetic yield was observed in warm environments and under optimal water conditions that resemble those where the germplasm originated(essentially as advanced lines)before its release in ***,the adaptation of semi-dwarf durum in spain has shown a tendency to specific adaptation rather than large-scale *** different patterns of selection have been reported due the G×E interaction and changes in the ranking of genotypes:in the high yielding environments(GY>5 Mg ha^-1),plants favor increased water uptake,with higher levels of transpiration and more open stomata(more negative values of carbon isotope composition,δ^13 C,and higher canopy temperature depression,CTD),whereas,in low yielding environments(GY<5 Mg ha^-1)plants close their stomata and favor greater water use efficiency(less negativeδ^13 C values and lower CTD values).
