Grayscale structured surfaces with nanometer-scale features are used in a growing number of applications in optics and fluidics.Thermal scanning probe lithography achieves a lateral resolution below 10 nm and a vertical resolution below 1 nm,but its maximum depth in polymers is limited.here,we present an innovative combination of nanowriting in thermal resist and plasma dry etching with substrate cooling,which achieves up to 10-fold amplification of polymer nanopatterns into SiO_(2) without proportionally increasing surface roughness.Sinusoidal nanopatterns in SiO_(2) with 400 nm pitch and 150 nm depth are fabricated free of shape distortion after dry etching.To exemplify the possible applications of the proposed method,grayscale dielectric nanostructures are used for scalable manufacturing through nanoimprint lithography and for strain nanoengineering of 2D materials.Such a method for aspect ratio amplification and smooth grayscale nanopatterning has the potential to find application in the fabrication of photonic and nanoelectronic devices.

Design of a large-scale model for wind tunnel test of a multiadaptive flap concept

The design and application of morphing systems are ongoing issues compelling the aviation industry.The Clean Sky-program represents the most significant aeronautical research ever launched in Europe on advanced technologies for greening next-generation aircraft.The primary purpose of the program is to develop new concepts aimed at decreasing the effects of aviation on the environment,increasing reliability,and promoting eco-friendly mobility.These ambitions are pursued through research on enabling technologies fostering noise and gas emissions reduction,mainly by improving aircraft aerodynamic performances.Within the Clean Sky framework,a multimodal morphing flap device was designed based on tight industrial requirements and tailored for large civil aircraft applications.The flap is deployed in one unique setting,and its cross section is morphed differently in take-off and landing to get the necessary extra lift for the specific flight phase.Moreover,during the cruise,the tip of the flap is deflected for load control and induced drag reduction.Before manufacturing the first flap prototype,a high-speed(Ma=0.3),large-scale test campaign(geometric scale factor 1:3)was deemed necessary to validate the performance improvements brought by this novel system at the aircraft level.On the other hand,the geometrical scaling of the flap prototype was considered impracticable due to the unscalability of the embedded mechanisms and actuators for shape transition.Therefore,a new architecture was conceived for the flap model to comply with the scaled dimensions requirements,withstand the relevant loads expected during the wind tunnel tests and emulate the shape transition capabilities of the true-scale flap.Simplified strategies were developed to effectively morph the model during wind tunnel tests while ensuring the robustness of each morphed configuration and maintaining adequate stiffness levels to prevent undesirable deviations from the intended aerodynamic shapes.Additionally,a simplified design was conceived for the flap-w

Multi-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS)spectroscopy combined with reverse Monte Carlo(RMC)simulations was used to probe the details of element-specific local coordinations and component-dependent structure relaxations in single crystalline equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy as a function of the annealing temperature.Two representative states,namely a high-temperature state,created by annealing at 1373 K,and a low-temperature state,produced by long-term annealing at 993 K,were compared in detail.Specific features identified in atomic configurations of particular principal components indicate variations in the local environment distortions connected to different degrees of compositional disorder at the chosen representative temperatures.The detected changes provide new atomistic insights and correlate with the existence of kinks previously observed in the Arrhenius dependencies of component diffusion rates in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy.

The contact of two surfaces in relative rotating motion occurs in many practical applications,from mechanical devices to human joints,displaying an intriguing interplay of effects at the onset of sliding due to the axisymmetric stress distribution.Theoretical and numerical models have been developed for some typical configurations,but work remains to be done to understand how to modify the emergent friction properties in this configuration.In this paper,we extend the two-dimensional(2D)spring-block model to investigate friction between surfaces in torsional contact.We investigate how the model describes the behavior of an elastic surface slowly rotating over a rigid substrate,comparing results with analytical calculations based on energy conservation.We show that an appropriate grading of the tribological properties of the surface can be used to avoid a non-uniform transition to sliding due to the axisymmetric configuration.

Metadata,data about other digital objects,play an important role in FAIR with a direct relation to all FAIR principles.In this paper we present and discuss the FAIR Data Point(FDP),a software architecture aiming to define a common approach to publish semantically-rich and machine-actionable metadata according to the FAIR principles.We present the core components and features of the FDP,its approach to metadata provision,the criteria to evaluate whether an application adheres to the FDP specifications and the service to register,index and allow users to search for metadata content of available FDPs.

Exploiting light to drive redox reactions is currently a hot topic since light is considered as an environmentally friendly source of energy.Consequently,cyanobacteria,which can use light e.g.,for generating NADPh,are in the focus of research.Previously,it has been shown that various heterologous redox enzymes could be expressed in these microorganisms.here we demonstrated the successful inducer-free expression of𝛼-keto-acid dehydroge-nases(L-hicDh and D-hicDh)from Lactobacillus confusus DSM 20196 and Lactobacillus paracasei DSM 20008 in Synechocystis sp.PCC 6803ΔhoxYh mutant using replicative plasmids.While the L-hicDh showed poor activity limited by the amount of expressed enzyme,the D-hicDh was applied both in vivo and in vitro,transforming the selected𝛼-keto acids to the corresponding optically pure(R)-𝛼-hydroxy acids(ee>99%)in up to 53%and 90%conversion,respectively.

Characterization of Curing and Bonding of Wood with Adhesive Mixtures of Liquefied Wood and hexamethylenediamine

Various crosslinking agents can be added to the formulations of natural-based adhesives for wood bonding in order to achieve better durability and higher strength of the formed joints.In the present study,the effect of hexamethylenediamine(hMDA)addition on the performance of liquefied wood(LW)adhesive for wood bonding is investigated.Differential scanning calorimetry showed the improved thermal stability and crosslinking of the LW adhesive with hMDA.The intensified presence of amide linkages(C–N bonds)was found in LW+hMDA with attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.Analysis of the bonded joints using an automated bonding evaluation system showed that a higher press temperature resulted in stronger bonds for both types of adhesives.Moreover,the addition of hMDA to LW adhesive improved the bond strength of the joints and accelerated the crosslinking of the adhesive.however,with a tensile shear strength of(6.76±2.16)N×mm^(−2)(for LW)and(6.89±2.10)N×mm^(−2)(for LW+hMDA),both adhesives were found to be unsuitable for interior non-structural use.In addition,the acidity of LW resulted in relatively high wood failure(70%)in the adhesive joints tested.Improved crosslinking of LW with hMDA was reflected in improved resistance of LW+hMDA adhesive joints to water degradation.In conclusion,hMDA is a promising additive for improving the adhesive performance of LW adhesives.
