Geographical background and dispersal ability may strongly influence assemblage dissimilarity;however,these aspects have generally been overlooked in previous large-scale beta diversity ***,we examined whether the patterns and drivers of taxonomic beta diversity(TBD)and phylogenetic beta diversity(PBD)of breeding birds in china vary across(1)regions on both sides of the Hu Line,which demarcates china’s topographical,climatic,economic,and social patterns,and(2)species with different dispersal *** and PBD were calculated and partitioned into turnover and nestedness components using a moving window *** representing climate,habitat heterogeneity,and habitat quality were employed to evaluate the effects of environmental *** distance was considered to assess the impact of dispersal *** partitioning analysis was applied to assess the relative roles of these *** general,the values of TBD and PBD were high in mountainous areas and were largely determined by environmental ***,different dominant environmental filters on either side of the Hu Line led to divergent beta diversity ***,climate-driven species turnover and habitat heterogeneity-related species nestedness dominated the regions east and west of the line,***,bird species with stronger dispersal ability were more susceptible to environmental filtering,resulting in more homogeneous *** results indicated that regions with distinctive geographical backgrounds may present different ecological factors that lead to divergent assemblage dissimilarity patterns,and dispersal ability determines the response of assemblages to these ecological *** a single universal explanation for the observed pattern without considering these aspects may lead to simplistic or incomplete ***,a comprehensive understanding of large-scale beta diversity patterns and effective pla

Locomotion behavior of cao vit gibbon(Nomascus nasutus)living in karst forest in Bangliang Nature Reserve,Guangxi,china

The cao vit gibbon is a critically endangered *** approximately 110 individuals remain in degraded karst forest along the china-Vietnam *** forest is unusual gibbon ***,the canopy height of cao vit gibbon habitat is approximately 10 *** on the locomotor behavior of gibbons living in this particular forest type might provide important insight into locomotor stability and variability of *** used 5 min scan samples to record the locomotion mode,support use and canopy strata of gibbons in 3 groups for 2096 h between January 2008 and December *** cao vit gibbon habitat has a lower canopy in comparison to that of other forests inhabited by gibbons,cao vit gibbons displayed a similar overall locomotor pattern to other gibbon species(Symphalangus syndactylus,Hylobates lar and Hylobates agilis)in which brachiation dominate their locomotor *** vit gibbons spent most of their time travelling on inclined branches(2-10 cm)in the middle stratum through the forest *** females appear to more often employ safer modes of locomotion(bridging more often and brachiation less),while adult males choose riskier modes(leaping more and climbing less).As gibbons increased in body weight,as they grew from infant to adult,they tended to use larger *** research documented that locomotor behavior in Hylobatidae is strongly determined by anatomical characters,but cao vit gibbons also show the ability to use various supports,enabling them to survive in karst forest.

The subfamily Megophryinae,as a representative batrachian group of the Oriental Realm and one of the most diverse groups of amphibians,has attracted considerable attention due to continued conjecture regarding its generic classification and failure to reach a satisfactory *** boasts the richest diversity of Asian horned toads,containing some two thirds of the total species ***,most species have a complicated taxonomic history,resulting in multiple *** such,an overall clarification of historical records and regional checklists is *** the current investigation,we established the phylogeny of the Asian horned toads and performed detailed examinations with redefinitions of several important morphological *** on the phylogenetic relationships and morphological differences,we propose a new ten-genus classification for the Asian horned toad subfamily Megophryinae:i.e.,Brachytarsophrys,Atympanophrys,Grillitschia,Sarawakiphrys ***.,Jingophrys ***.,Xenophrys,Megophrys,Pelobatrachus,Ophryophryne,and *** on the diagnosability,distribution,and content of each genus are ***,we present a careful review of the taxonomic history of Asian horned toad species from china and provide a monograph of congeners,including six species of Brachytarsophrys,four species of Atympanophrys,five species of Jingophrys ***.,10 species of Xenophrys,two species of Ophryophryne,and 60 species of ***,we discuss the importance of traditional morphological traits based on multiple populations in taxonomic work as well as taxonomic inflation caused by the genetic species delimitation.

Comparisons of microstructure and elemental composition of eggshells among wild plover populations

Reproduction investment is a prominent trade-off in life-history theory and is subject to strong selection *** avian eggshell,as a crucial barrier between the bird embryo and the surrounding environment,undergoes optimization under different environmental selection regimes to ensure the successful development of embryos,which can be linked to local ***,understanding the variation in eggshell microstructure and composition in wild bird populations living in contrasting ambient environments is of great *** this study,we utilized electron microscope ultrastructure measurement and elemental analyses to measure and compare the microstructure and element composition of eggshells from three wild plover populations(Charadrius alexandrinus and ***)residing in heterogeneous habitats across varied climatic *** populations include the high-altitude Qinghai Lake population,the temperate coastal Tangshan population,and the tropical coastal Zhanjiang *** findings revealed that the palisade layer was thinner in the Qinghai Lake population compared to its lowland *** difference might be attributed to hypoxia which facilitates the hatching process by allowing chicks to easily break through their ***,the variations in the elemental composition of the eggshells among populations well reflected the distribution of element content in different geographical *** Qinghai Lake population displayed low zinc and low manganese levels but high calcium levels,while the Zhanjiang population exhibited high zinc,high iron,high manganese,and high phosphorus ***,these variations in elemental composition could also account for the observed microstructural differences among ***,we propose that the dissimilarities in eggshell microstructure and elemental composition among populations could be attributed to adaptations to different environmental *** findings

The fire-bellied newt genus Cynops contains ten known species distributed in china and Japan in East *** this work,two new Cynops species are described,namely Cynops jiaoren *** in northern Guangdong and Cynops maguae *** in eastern *** two new species can be distinctly distinguished from their congeners by the independent phylogenetic placements and a combination of morphological *** discovery of these two new species in the Southeast Chinese Hilly Area,where half of congeners occur,increases the known diversity of Cynops,and indicates unresolved relationships among the species in southeastern *** discussions on the taxonomic status of Cynops cyanurus are also provided.

The Community Abundance and Diversity of Arable Soil Insect Community Following Different Fertilizer Treatments in Xinjiang, china

The soil insect community was studied in grey desert soil district in September 2004. 90 soil samples and 100 pitfalls were collected from 10 treatments, i.e., abandonment （Aband.）, CK, N, NP, NK, PK, NPK, MNPK （fertilizer N：organic N = 3：7）, 1.5MNPK, and SNPK. 4915 soil insects （128 unknown）, as individuals belonging to 9 orders and 33 families, were obtained by pitfall traps and modified Tullgren methods. The results showed that, based on the number of individuals and groups, the macro fauna in total reached their peaks in abandonment, whereas meso and micro fauna in N and PK, respectively. Of the 10 treatments, the most dominant of soil insect composition was in MNPK and most evenness was N. The result by Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the distribution of the arable soil insect was significantly impacted by different fertilizer treatments （X0.05（9） = 23.38, P 〈 0.005）, and soil insect group of the abandonment was significantly different from that of other fertilizer treatments. The soil insect community was divided into five groups by non-metric- MDS analysis：（1） NPK, MNPK, 1.5MNPK, CK, （2） NP and PK, （3） NK and N, （4） SNPK, and （5） abandonment, which indicated that distribution of soil insect was related to the character of the fertilizer. In the principal component analysis, two factors explained 98.51% of the total variation among the 10 treatments, and the factor one explained that N and SNPK positively affected soil insect community, whereas factor two explained that 1.5MNPK positively affected soil insect community, which showed that the diversified fertilizer did not evenly affect the soil insect community.
