A self-powered skin patch for the measurement of sweat conductivity is *** key component of the patch consists of a paper battery that is activated upon absorption of *** body fluid acts as the battery electrolyte,the conductivity of which has a direct impact on the battery-generated output power and *** particular behaviour enables the operation of a very simple and robust conductivity sensor in direct current mode without needing an external power *** device presented in this paper takes advantage of this new measurement method to develop a sweat patch for screening cystic fibrosis that operates with an extremely simple electronic circuit that minimizes its cost and environmental *** patch provides an unambiguous digital result that can be read in an electrochromic display and yields 95%sensitivity and 100%specificity when tested with artificial eccrine perspiration samples.

Background:Nodding syndrome(NS)is a devastating epileptic illness of unknown aetiology mainly affecting children 5-15 years of *** nodding distinguishes NS from other forms of *** manifestations of the illness include mental and physical growth *** children die as a result of falling in fires or ***,it was shown that NS is only one of the phenotypic presentations of onchocerciasis associated epilepsy(OAE).Despite the strong epidemiological association between epilepsy and onchocerciasis,the causal mechanism is *** implementation of bi-annual community directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTi)and larviciding of rivers in northern Uganda,new cases of NS have ceased,while new cases continue to emerge in South Sudanese onchocerciasis-endemic areas with an interrupted CDTi *** study is designed to evaluate the potential effects of bi-annual CDTi on reducing the incidence of NS/OAE in onchocerciasisendemic areas in South ***:A pre-intervention door-to-door population-based household survey will be conducted in selected onchocerciasis-endemic villages in Mundri and Maridi Counties,which have a high prevalence of *** a validated questionnaire,the entire village will be screened by community research assistants for suspected epilepsy *** cases will be interviewed and examined by a trained clinical officer or medical doctor who will confirm or reject the diagnosis of ***-annual CDTi will be implemented in the villages and a surveillance system for epilepsy set *** implementing an epilepsy onchocerciasis awareness campaign we expect to obtain>90%CDTi coverage of eligible *** door-to-door survey will be repeated two years after the baseline *** incidence of NS/OAE will be compared before and after bi-annual ***:Our study is the first population-based study to evaluate the effect of bi-annual CDTi to reduce the incidence of NS/*** the study

Back pain is a common condition with a high social impact and represents a global health *** disc disease(IVDD)is one of the major causes of back pain;no therapeutics are currently available to reverse this *** impact of bone mineral density(BMD)on IVDD has been controversial,with some studies suggesting osteoporosis as causative for IVDD and others suggesting it as protective for *** studies to evaluate the influence of genetic components of BMD in IVDD could highlight opportunities for drug development and *** taking a holistic 3D approach,we established an aging zebrafish model for spontaneous *** BMD in aging,detected by automated computational analysis,is caused by bone deformities at the ***,aged zebrafish spines showed changes in bone morphology,microstructure,mineral heterogeneity,and increased fragility that resembled *** of the discs recapitulated IVDD symptoms found in humans:the intervertebral ligament(equivalent to the annulus fibrosus)showed disorganized collagen fibers and herniation,while the disc center(nucleus pulposus equivalent)showed dehydration and cellular *** manipulated BMD in young zebrafish by mutating sp7 and cathepsin K,leading to low and high BMD,***,we detected IVDD in both groups,demonstrating that low BMD does not protect against IVDD,and we found a strong correlation between high BMD and *** learning was applied to high-resolution synchrotron\iCJ image data to analyze osteocyte 3D lacunar distribution and morphology,revealing a role of sp7 in controlling the osteocyte lacunar 3D *** findings suggest potential avenues through which bone quality can be targeted to identify beneficial therapeutics for IVDD.

Plasma-based CO_(2)conversion is promising for carbon capture and ***,inconsistent reporting of the performance metrics makes it difficult to compare plasma processes systematically,complicates elucidating the underlying mechanisms and compromises further development of this ***,this critical review summarizes the correct definitions for gas conversion in plasma reactors and highlights common errors and inconsistencies observed throughout *** is done for pure CO_(2)splitting,dry reforming of methane and CO_(2)*** demonstrate that the change in volumetric flow rate is a critical aspect,inherent to these reactions,that is often not correctly taken into *** dry reforming of methane and CO_(2)hydrogenation,we also demonstrate inconsistent reporting of energy efficiency,and through numerical examples,we show the significance of these ***,we discuss how to measure changes in volumetric flow rate,supported by data from two experimental examples,showing that the sensitivity inherent to a standard component and a flow meter is essential to consider when deriving the performance ***,some general recommendations and good practices are *** paper aims to be a comprehensive guideline for authors,to encourage more consistent calculations and stimulate the further development of this technology.

Data harmonization and documentation of the data processing are essential prerequisites for enabling Canonical Analysis *** recently revised Terabyte-scale air quality database system,which the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report(TOAR)created,contains one of the world's largest collections of near-surface air quality measurements and considers FAIR data principles as an integral part.A special feature of our data service is the on-demand processing and product generation of several air quality metrics directly from the underlying *** this paper,we show that the necessary data harmonization for establishing such online analysis services goes much deeper than the obvious issues of common data formats,variable names,and measurement units,and we explore how the generation of FAIR Digital Objects(FDO)in combination with automatically generateddocumentation may support Canonical Analysis Workflows for airquality and related data.

The strong coupling of an excitonic transition with an electromagnetic mode results in composite quasi-particles called exciton polaritons,which have been shown to combine the best properties of their individual components in semiconductor ***,the physics and applications of polariton flows in organic materials and at room temperature are still unexplored because of the poor photon confinement in such ***,we demonstrate that polaritons formed by the hybridization of organic excitons with a Bloch surface wave are able to propagate for hundreds of microns showing remarkable third-order nonlinear interactions upon high injection *** findings pave the way for the study of organic nonlinear light–matter fluxes and for a technologically promising route of the realization of dissipation-less on-chip polariton devices operating at room temperature.

Soils are impacted globally by several anthropogenic factors,including chemical *** those,perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are of concern due to their high environmental persistence,and as they might affect soil structure and ***,data on impacts of PFAS on soil structure and microbially-driven processes are currently *** study explored the effects of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid(PFOS),perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid(PFBS)at environmental-relevant concentrations on soil health,using a 6-week microcosm ***(even at 0.5 ng g-1 for PFBS)significantly increased litter decomposition,associated with positive effects on-glucosidase *** effect increased with PFAS *** pH was significantly increased,likely as a direct consequence of increased litter decomposition affected by *** respiration was significantly inhibited by PFAS in week 3,while this effect was more variable in week ***-stable aggregates were negatively affected by PFOS,possibly related to microbial *** affected soil bacterial and fungal abundance,but not microbial and certain enzyme *** work highlights the potential effects of PFAS on soil health,and we argue that this substance class could be a factor of environmental change of potentially broad relevance in terrestrial ecosystem functioning.

A colloidal solution of 5 nm Au tetradecanethiol-coated nanoparticles is syn-thesized. After fast evaporation of one drop, ordered monolayers both composed of single domain and polycrystalline nanocrystals are obtained. On increasing the amount of materials and the evaporation time, nanocrystal films with irregular outlines are produced together with close-packed 3D superlattices exhibiting a truncated-tetrahedral shape. Using low-frequency micro-Raman scattering spectroscopy and electron microscopy the building block nanocrystallinity is characterized. Spontaneous nanocrystallinity segregation is revealed： the truncated-tetrahedral supracrystals are shown to mainly contain single domain building blocks while the supracrystalline films are composed of a mixture of single domain and polycrystalline nanocrystals. This observation points out the correlation between the nanocrystallinity segregation involved in the growth of the nanocrystal superlattices and their morphology.
