Advancing multispecies fishery management in China:Lessons from international experience

China’s 13th Five-Year Plan elevated the national mandate for environmental *** fisheries are characterized by full retention of high diversity catch harvested using unselective gears,creating ecological ***,China launched pilot projects in management by Total Allowable Catch(TAC)in five coastal provinces in 2017 and 2018 to build experience with output *** province launched an important pilot in its swimming crab fishery,the first to adopt a multispecies *** guide Fujian and other provinces in multispecies management,a workshop in April 2018 shared international *** workshop considered 13 case studies spanning a wide range of underlying scientific models and types of harvest *** harvest controls based on simple survey-or index-based models that aggregate trends for many species are typically operationally easier for managers and ***,inadequate management can cause declines of individual species,sometimes leading to adoption of species-specific models and then species-specific harvest *** transition often incurs economic costs through scientific and management demands,and constraints on harvest of co-occurring *** lessons revealed by the case studies suggest multispecies TACs might be effective in the Fujian swimming crab fishery given the modest number of species with similar and productive life history traits,and the market demand for all *** experimentation with different management approaches through pilot projects can enable China to maintain progress toward sustainable fisheries goals under the 14th Five-Year Plan.

Observations of the first light and the epoch of reionization

Studying the first generation of stars, galaxies and supermassive black holes as well as the epoch of reionization is one of the fundamental questions of modern as- trophysics. The last few years have witnessed the first confirmation of the discoveries of galaxies, quasars and Gamma-Ray Bursts at z 〉 7, with possible detections at z - 10. There is also mounting evidence that cosmic reionization is a prolonged pro- cess that peaks around z - 10 and ends at z- 6 - 7. Observations of the highest redshift intergalactic medium and the most metal-poor stars in the Galaxy begin to constrain the earliest chemical enrichment processes in the Universe. These observa- tions provide a glimpse of cosmic history over the first billion years after the Big Bang. In this review, we will present recent results on the observations of the high-redshift Universe over the past decade, highlight key challenges and uncertainties in these observations, and preview what is possible with the next generation facilities in studying the first light and mapping the history of reionization.

Ruthenium-lead oxide for acidic oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

Developing an active and stable anode catalyst for the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer(PEM-WE)is a critical objective to enhance the economic viability of green hydrogen ***,the expensive iridium-based electrocatalyst remains the sole practical material with industrial-level stability for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction(OER)at the ***-based catalysts have been proposed as more cost-effective alternatives with improved activity,though their stability requires *** current urgent goal is to reduce costs and noble metal loading of the OER catalyst while maintaining robust activity and *** this study,we design a Ru-based OER catalyst incorporating Pb as a supporting *** electrocatalyst exhibits an OER overpotential of 201 mV at 10 mA·cm^(-2),simultaneously reducing Ru noble metal loading by~40%.Normalization of the electrochemically active surface area unveils improved intrinsic activity compared to the pristine RuO_(2) *** a practical stability test in a PEM-WE setup,our developed catalyst sustains stable performance over 300 h without notable degradation,underscoring its potential for future applications as a reliable anodic catalyst.

Discovery of novel materials is slow but necessary for societal ***,we demonstrate a closed-loop machine learning(ML)approach to rapidly explore a large materials search space,accelerating the intentional discovery of superconducting *** experimentally validating the results of the ML-generated superconductivity predictions and feeding those data back into the ML model to refine,we demonstrate that success rates for superconductor discovery can be more than *** four closed-loop cycles,we report discovery of a superconductor in the Zr-In-Ni system,re-discovery of five superconductors unknown in the training datasets,and identification of two additional phase diagrams of interest for new superconducting *** work demonstrates the critical role experimental feedback provides in ML-driven discovery,and provides a blueprint for how to accelerate materials progress.

Influences of at-sea fishery monitoring on science, management, and fleet dynamics

Fisheries are complex systems comprised of scientific,management,fishing fleet,and ecological *** the composition,behavior,and functions of these sub-systems vary considerably,a review of case studies,research,and theory illustrates that one positive and pervasive influence across all can be at-sea monitoring of fishing activity and ***-sea monitoring provides reliable and high-resolution data on spatial and temporal patterns in effort and total catch,and the taxonomic and life stage composition of catch,thereby improving the science underlying management *** decisions can draw upon a wider range of approaches,such as rights-based management and finer scale spatial,temporal,and catch restrictions,that require the greater oversight facilitated by *** science and implementation can in turn increase confidence in management among the fishing fleet,bolstered by the knowledge that other fishers are equally accountable for their *** series of positive outcomes represent a self-reinforcing virtuous cycle in the ***,breakdowns in science,management,and fishing behavior can create an‘accountability cascade’of blame,distrust,and ***,effective at-sea monitoring,in combination with other reforms,can move fisheries away from overexploitation and toward *** to this transformation is a growing toolkit of technological innovations that increasingly make at-sea monitoring more feasible in fleets spanning diverse ecological,economic,political,and operational gradients.

Intermolecular Vibrational Energy Transfers in Melts and Solutions

Resonant and nonresonant intermolecular vibrational energy transfers in Gdm- SCN/KSCN=1/1, GdmSCN/KS^13CN=1/1 and GdmSCN/KS^13C^15N=1/1 mixed crystals in melts and in aqueous solutions are studied with the two dimensional infrared spectroscopy. The energy transfers in the samples are slower with a larger energy donor/acceptor gap, independent of the Raman spectra. The energy gap dependences of the nonresonant energy transfers cannot be described by the phonon compensation mechanism. Instead, the experi- mental energy gap dependences can be quantitatively described by the dephasing mechanism. Temperature dependences of resonant and nonresonant energy transfer rates in the melts are also consistent with the prediction of the dephasing mechanism. The series of results suggest that the dephasing mechanism can be dominant not only in solutions, but also in melts （pure liquids without solvents）, only if the molecular motions （translations and rotations） are much faster than the nonresonant energy transfer processes.

Construction, visualization, and analysis of aiological network models in Dynetica

Mathematical modeling has become an increasingly important aspect of biological research. Computer simulations help to improve our understanding of complex systems by testing the validity of proposed mechanisms and generating experimentally testable hypotheses. However, significant overhead is generated by the creation, debugging, and perturbation of these computational models and their parameters, especially for researchers who are unfamiliar with programming or numerical methods. Dynetica 2.0 is a user-friendly dynamic network simulator designed to expedite this process. Models are created and visualized in an easy-to-use graphical interface, which displays all of the species and reactions involved in a graph layout. System inputs and outputs, indicators, and intermediate expressions may be incorporated into the model via the versatile ＂expression variable＂ entity. Models can also be modular, allowing for the quick construction of complex systems from simpler components. Dynetica 2.0 supports a number of deterministic and stochastic algorithms for performing time-course simulations. Additionally, Dynetica 2.0 provides built-in tools for performing sensitivity or dose response analysis for a number of different metrics. Its parameter searching tools can optimize specific objectives of the time course or dose response of the system. Systems can be translated from Dynetica 2.0 into MATLAB code or the Systems Biology Markup Language （SBML） format for further analysis or publication. Finally, since it is written in Java, Dynetica 2.0 is platform independent, allowing for easy sharing and collaboration between researchers.

Myosin *** Regulates Protonemal Patterning and Developmental Timing in the Moss Physcomitrella patens

Plants have two classes of myosins. While recent work has focused on class XI myosins showing that myosin XI is responsible for organelle motility and cytoplasmic streaming, much less is known about the role of myosin VIII in plant growth and development. We have used a combination of RNAi and insertional knockouts to probe myosin VIII function in the moss Physcomitrella patens. We isolated Amyo8ABCDE plants demonstrating that myosin VIII is not required for plant viability. However, myosin VIII mutants are smaller than wild-type plants in part due to a defect in cell size. Additionally, Amyo8ABCDE plants produce more side branches and form gametophores much earlier than wild-type plants. In the ab- sence of nutrient media, Amyo8ABCDE plants exhibit significant protonemal patterning defects, including highly curved protonemal filaments, morphologically defective side branches, as well as an increase in the number of branches. Exogenous auxin partially rescues protonemal defects in Amyo8ABCDE plants grown in the absence of nutrients. This result, together with defects in protonemal branching, smaller caulonemal ceils, and accelerated development in the Amyo8ABCDE plants, suggests that myosin VIII is involved in hormone homeostasis in P patens.

Ensemble habitat suitability modeling of stomatopods with Oratosquilla oratoria as an example

Stomatopods are better known as mantis shrimp with considerable ecological importance in wide coastal waters globally. Some stomatopod species are exploited commercially, including Oratosquilla oratoria in the Northwest Pacific. Yet, few studies have published to promote accurate habitat identification of stomatopods, obstructing scientific management and conservation of these valuable organisms. This study provides an ensemble modeling framework for habitat suitability modeling of stomatopods, utilizing the O. oratoria stock in the Bohai Sea as an example. Two modeling techniques(i.e., generalized additive model(GAM) and geographical weighted regression(GWR)) were applied to select environmental predictors(especially the selection between two types of sediment metrics) that better characterize O. oratoria distribution and build separate habitat suitability models(HSM). The performance of the individual HSMs were compared on interpolation accuracy and ***, they were integrated to check whether the ensemble model outperforms either individual model, according to fishers’ knowledge and scientific survey data. As a result, grain-size metrics of sediment outperformed sediment content metrics in modeling O. oratoria habitat, possibly because grain-size metrics not only reflect the effect of substrates on burrow development, but also link to sediment heat capacity which influences individual thermoregulation. Moreover, the GWR-based HSM outperformed the GAM-based HSM in interpolation accuracy,while the latter one displayed better transferability. On balance, the ensemble HSM appeared to improve the predictive performance overall, as it could avoid dependence on a single model type and successfully identified fisher-recognized and survey-indicated suitable habitats in either sparsely sampled or well investigated areas.
