A South American freshwater gastropod, the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, has become a driver of ecosystemic changes in wetlands and an important rice pest after its introduction to various parts of the world, mainly Asia. The objective of this study was to study the effect of an abrupt interruption in food availability in the short term （up to 4 weeks） and long term （up to 8 months） on survival and re- productive activity. The main results indicate that short-term fasting mainly affects the survival of males, but only when they are raised together with females, probably due to a greater mate-searching activity that increases mortality in the individuals with lower reserves. The number of copulating snails or egg-laying females shows an abrupt drop when fasting and a rapid recovery after the food supply is restored. The strategy of discontinuing reproductive activity prioritizes energy conservation for the survival of the females. Interpopulation variation in resistance to starvation was observed in adults, which can be explained to some extent by the food availability that they experienced in their natural environment. No interpopulational differences in survival were seen in hatchlings. The mean maximum values of survival under starvation were 52.6 days in hatchlings and the 3.3% of adults survive over than 200 days, which may be a relevant trait in dispersal and establishment in new habitats.

Our study investigated the diet of the southernmost gecko in the world, Homonota darwini. Fifty-three specimens were captured during spring and summer in four locations in Patagonia, Argentina. The stomach contents of the specimens were identified, and we tbund that prey consisted of six main groups： Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Homoptera and Araneae, and the adults and larvae of moth Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera was the major dietary component. The presence of ants and moths as common prey suggests an ambush feeding strategy. In spring, females consumed more ants than males although no other dietary differences between males and females were evident. We tbund nine geckos with empty stomachs and six parasitized by nematodes. Presence of empty stomachs corroborates previous observations of other nocturnal geckos and non-gecko lizards. Reduced foraging success of nocturnal lizards could be due to difficulty in prey detection due to dim light, reduced or erratic activity of insect prey at night, or shorter activity times of geckos relative to diurnal success. Sex and season were not associated with the incidence of empty stomachs. Principal component analysis showed that four food alternatives correlated with season. The constraint of nocturnality, coupled with low night-time temperatures restricting feeding to only a few hours after sunset, appear to have caused a generality of diet which may limit energy acquisition. We conclude that H. darwini is an arthropod generalist and likely an ambush forager, as are many other nocturnal gekkonids

Iterated Conditional Modes to Solve Simultaneous Localization and Mapping in Markov Random Fields Context

This paper models the complex simultaneous localization and mapping（SLAM） problem through a very flexible Markov random field and then solves it by using the iterated conditional modes algorithm. Markovian models allow to incorporate： any motion model; any observation model regardless of the type of sensor being chosen; prior information of the map through a map model; maps of diverse natures; sensor fusion weighted according to the accuracy. On the other hand, the iterated conditional modes algorithm is a probabilistic optimizer widely used for image processing which has not yet been used to solve the SLAM problem. This iterative solver has theoretical convergence regardless of the Markov random field chosen to model. Its initialization can be performed on-line and improved by parallel iterations whenever deemed appropriate. It can be used as a post-processing methodology if it is initialized with estimates obtained from another SLAM solver. The applied methodology can be easily implemented in other versions of the SLAM problem, such as the multi-robot version or the SLAM with dynamic environment. Simulations and real experiments show the flexibility and the excellent results of this proposal.

The design of urban squares in the city of Mendoza,Argentina,is based on aesthetic and landscaping criteria without consider strategies to enhance the benefits that green areas generate on the city's micrometeorological *** paper aims to evaluate different design alternatives with the purpose to determine which proportion and distribution of green and sealed areas contributes to achieve the best conditions in terms of thermal behavior and ***-met software was used to simulate thermal conditions over twenty three scenarios,and COMFA method was employed to determine comfort in the scenarios that show the best thermal behaviour and are representative of current design *** results show that the most effective scheme for the memorial squares rehabilitation is the one concentrating 60%of woodlot around a sealed center with an area that does not exceed 20%the square *** effective alternative is the one concentrating 60%of woodlot at the center of the *** findings highlight the importance of an adequate relation between proportion and distribution of woodlot/sealed areas to improve thermal performance and comfort conditions of open spaces.

Oxidative effects of glyphosate on the lipophobic intracellular environment in the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

The studied hypothesis is that the herbicide glyphosate(GLY)can affect the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic intracellular medium in non-target Chlorella vulgaris *** GLY and RoundUp(RUP)supplementation,affected the growth profile.A significant 42%decrease in the cellular biomass in stationary(St)phase was observed in cultures supplemented with either 5μM of GLY or RUP,as compared to control *** treatment with 0.3μM of GLY generated non-significant effects on the oxidation rate of 2’,7’dichlorofluorescein diacetate(DCFH-DA),neither in exponential(Exp)nor in St phase of development,as compared to control ***,the treatment with either 5μM GLY or 0.3 and 5μM RUP lead to a significant decrease in the DCFH-DA oxidation rate,as compared to control *** lipid radical(LR●)generation rate,detected by Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy(EPR),was significantly increased in the presence of RUP,in Lag and Exp phase of *** non-enzymatic antioxidants,α-Tocopherol(α-T)andβ-Carotene(β-C),are aimed to protect membranes against the damage produced by the radical *** content ofβ-C was not significantly affected,as compared to control cultures,by any of the treatments,in both growth phases of cellular *** content ofα-T was significantly decreased by the supplementation with either 0.3 or 5μM of RUP or 5μM *** LR●/α-T ratio,used as indicator of the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic cellular media,was significantly different between samples obtained from control and RUP-exposed microalgae in both,Exp and St phase of development,with either 0.3 or 5μM *** data presented here showed evidence that suggested that oxidative balance in the hydrophobic environment was affected by either GLY or RUP.

Vegetation recovery after fire in mountain grasslands of Argentina

Fire is a natural disturbance occurring every few years in many grasslands ecosystems. However, since European colonization, fire has been highly reduced or even suppressed in Argentinean grasslands, fostering ignitable material accumulation. This has led to occasional catastrophic controldemanding fire events, extended for larger areas. The aims of this work are to study vegetation recovery and change after a non-natural fire event in mountain grasslands. The study area is located in the Ventania mountain system, mid-eastern Argentina. We studied vegetation recovery after fire(January 2014) in two different communities: grass-steppes(grasslands) and shrub-steppes(open low shrublands). We measured vegetation cover, species richness and bare ground percentage in burned and unburned areas 1, 4, 8, 11 and 23 months after fire. Vegetation surveys were also performed at the end of the growing season(December) 11 and 23 months after fire. Data were analyzed using regression analysis, ANOVA and multivariate analysis(NMS, PERMANOVA). Both communities increased their vegetation cover at the same rate, without differences between burned and unburned areas after two years. Species richness was higher in shrublands and their recovery was alsofaster than in grasslands. Considering functional composition, besides transient changes during the first year after fire, there were no differences in abundance of different functional vegetation groups two years after fire. At the same time, shrublands showed no differences in species composition, while grasslands had a different species composition in burned and unburned plots. Also, burned grassland showed a higher species richness than unburned grassland. Data shown mountain vegetation in Pampas grassland is adapted to fire, recovering cover and richness rapidly after fire and thus reducing soil erosion risks. Vegetation in mountain Pampas seems to be well adapted to fire, but in grasslands species composition has changed due to fire.
