Herba Epimedii′s biotransformation in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion and faecal fermentation systems

OBJECTIVE Epimedium is rich in a variety of beneficial active ingredients,and has been widely used in the ethnopharmacological practices,however,its biotransformation in gastrointestinal digestions remain *** study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of components and biological activity of Epimedium in the in vitro simulated digestion and subsequent human faecal *** The models of in vitro simulated saliva,gastric and intestinal digestion,as well as colonic fermentation were constructed to simulate the digestion process of *** dynamic changes of components of Epimedium during the simulated digestions in vitro and subsequent human faecal fermentation were investigated by UPLC-MS,HPLC-DAD combined with principal component analysis(PCA)and multi-ingredient quantitative *** A variety of metabolites with high contents were produced after 0.5 h of intestinal digestion and colonic fermentation 0.5 *** of PCA to HPLC data showed the obvious separation of colonic fermentation 0.5 h stage samples from other colonic fermentation stages samples(24,48 and 72 h).Additionally,non-digestion and saliva digestion stage samples clustered together,and there was obvious separation between intestinal digestion samples and gastric digestion *** contents of epimedium C,icariin and baohuside I all increased significantly after intestinal digestion[58.70±7.08,47.15±5.68 and(12.78±0.55)mg·g^(-1)]compared with gastric digestion[29.00±5.65,17.40±4.55 and(2.77±0.19)mg·g^(-1)].There were significant differences between sample after 0.5 h of colonic fermentation[64.22±9.32,51.26±6.33 and(16.68±3.19)mg·g^(-1)]and other time points(24,48 and 72 h)in components and the contents of active ingredient,and the content of these components all decreased with the fermentation *** ability of scavenging ABTS free radicals[IC50=(0.29±0.02)g·L^(-1)]increased significantly compared with gastric digestion[(1.57±0.02)g·L^(-1)],and after 0

Native and exotic seed dispersal by the stone marten(Martes foina):implications for the regeneration of a relict climactic forest in central Portugal

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Heat transfer in flow through branching tubes

Allometric scaling relations for how branching tubes deliver fluid are often based on the assumption of isothermal conditions which are not always fulfilled. This work reports on the sizes of branching tubes for fluid flow subjected to constant wall heat flux. It explores how the delivery of fluid and heat influences the optimal size of a tube and the optimal configuration of branching tubes for both laminar and turbulent flow. Besides, it presents an analytical basis for evaluation of optimal size of tubes that minimise the power loss associated with the pumping power and the heat transfer. The findings obtained in this study may have important implications for design of systems with minimum thermodynamic losses.

For sustainable plant drinks production,the biorefinery concept of obtained press cakes(PC)using ultrasonication,mechanical separation,and ultra-filtration was designed in Fraunhofer UMSICHT(Germany).In this study obtained permeates,as wastes after ultrafiltration of PC(soyabeans,almonds,coconut,oats,and rice)were analyzed and their bio-stimulatory effect on the growth of wheatgrass in vivo was *** with higher soluble protein content(soy,almonds,and coconut)resulted in a significant increase in germination parameters(germination percentage(GP),length of stem and root as well as biomass of stem and root increased on averge by 8.3%,15.8%,9.2%,2.22 times and 1.8 times,respectively)compared to the control ***,the fermentation using antimicrobial lactic acid bacteria(LAB)strains(Lactobacillus brevis LUHS173,Pediococcus acidilactici LUHS236 and Lactobacillus farraginis LUHS206)was applied for bio-treatment of *** efficiency of fermentation process was evaluated on the changes of pH,TTA,LAB growth kinetics and lactic acid and its isomers ***,the antifungal activity of selected fermented products against fungi(Fusarium graminearum F,***,and ***)was *** was found that the highest antifungal activity(18.0 mm and 16.5 mm,respectively)was obtained by 48 h fermentation of permeates from grain press cake(oats and rice),containing the most reducing saccharides,and they significantly improved the germination of contaminated *** in the sustainable production of plant-origin drinks enable to implementation of new,environmentally friendly technologies in food sector.

Color polymorphisms are widely studied to identify the mechanisms responsible for the origin and maintenance of phenotypic variability in *** of the mechanisms of balancing selection currently thought to explain the long-term persistence of polymorphisms are the evolution of alternative phenotypic optima through correlational selection on suites of traits including color and *** of these mechanisms can generate differences in offspring viability and fitness arising from different morph ***,we examined the effect of parental morph combination on fertilization success,embryonic viability,newborn quality,antipredator,and foraging behavior,as well as inter-annual survival by conducting controlled matings in a polymorphic lacertid Podarcis muralis,where color morphs are frequently assumed to reflect alternative phenotypic optima(e.g.,alternative reproductive strategies).Juveniles were kept in outdoor tubs for a year in order to study inter-annual growth,survival,and morph *** agreement with a previous genome-wide association analysis,morph frequencies in the year-old juveniles matched the frequencies expected if orange and yellow expressions depended on recessive homozygosity at 2 separate *** findings also agree with previous literature reporting higher reproductive output of heavy females and the higher overall viability of heavy newborn lizards,but we found no evidence for the existence of alternative breeding investment strategies in female morphs,or morphcombination effects on offspring viability and *** conclude that inter-morph breeding remains entirely viable and genetic incompatibilities are of little significance for the maintenance of discrete color morphs in *** from the Pyrenees.
