A hybrid policy gradient and rule-based control framework for electric vehicle charging

Recent years have seen a significant increase in the adoption of electric vehicles,and investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and rooftop photo-voltaic *** ability to delay electric vehicle charging provides inherent flexibility that can be used to compensate for the intermittency of photo-voltaic generation and optimize against fluctuating electricity *** this flexibility,however,requires smart control algorithms capable of handling uncertainties from photo-voltaic generation,electric vehicle energy demand and user’s *** paper proposes a control framework combining the advantages of reinforcement learning and rule-based control to coordinate the charging of a fleet of electric vehicles in an office *** control objective is to maximize self-consumption of locally generated electricity and consequently,minimize the electricity cost of electric vehicle *** performance of the proposed framework is evaluated on a real-world data set from EnergyVille,a Belgian research *** results show that the proposed control framework achieves a 62.5%electricity cost reduction compared to a business-as-usual or passive charging *** addition,only a 5%performance gap is achieved in comparison to a theoretical near-optimal strategy that assumes perfect knowledge on the required energy and user behaviour of each electric vehicle.

The use of non-equilibrium plasmas for the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts is a field that has not been explored intensively. The main reasons for the recent increase of research activity in this field are related to the advantages that go with the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition （PECVD）. The most principal of these advantages are the possibility to avoid the use of environmentally harmful solvents and the one-step nature of the procedure, making it very time and labor efficient. Non-equilibrium plasma technology, more in particular dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） technology, has been applied in this work for the synthesis of hybrid tin-silicate materials to be used as a heterogeneous catalyst in the isomerization of glucose into fructose. Atomizers, innovative devices which make it possible to inject nanosized precursor liquids into the plasma zone, are used instead of applying vapor phase techniques, where the amount of precursor is limited by the vapor pressure of the liquid. A design of experiments approach has been employed to investigate the effect of the plasma parameters, namely gas flow, frequency and power density, on the catalytic properties of the catalysts within a well-defined parameter field. It has been found that indeed these parameters, together with the molar ratio of Si/Sn, have an important influence on the activity, selectivity, and thus yield of the produced chemicals.

Guava leaves (Psidium guajava ) are popularly known due to their effects antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, and functional properties. Processes for the concentration of these extracts are necessary since their pharmacological effects are dose-dependent. In this work, guava leaves aqueous extract (GE) concentration was carried out in nanofiltration (NF) equipment. Process performance was evaluated in terms of permeate flux, flux decline modeling, and extract quality (compounds characterization, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity). NF allowed an increase in phenolic compounds next to 20-times, retention coefficients of total phenolic compounds (99%) and enhanced antioxidant capacity (an increase of 4 and 9-fold for ABTS and DPPH, respectively) compared to the initial GE. Forty-two phenolic compounds were identified, being catechin (594.56 mg mL^(−1) ) and vescalagin (295.39 mg mL^(−1) ) the main compounds. All phenolics presented a significant increase (p < 0.05) after the concentration suggesting that NF is efficient for the recovery and concentration of bioactive compounds and poses as an alternative to obtain functional products and improve added value in agro-industrial residues.
