Quality of life for the elderly in an ageing society is receiving more attention than ever. After age 40, muscle mass loses at the rate of 3% to 8% every 10 years. More- over, the decline intensifies after 60 years old. Although many people do not experience changes in total body weight, their muscle mass is slowly replaced by body fat. AIM： To evaluate the association among hepatic fibrosis, serum iron indices, and hepatic iron stores in patients with Chronic Hepatitis C （CHC）. METHODS： Thirty-two CHC patients were included in our study. The histological degree of fibrosis and inflammation activity was assessed according to the Metavir system. The serum iron indices including ferritin, iron and transferrin saturation were measured. Hepatic iron deposition was graded by Perls＇ stain. RESULTS： The CHC patients with severe hepatic fibrosis （n = 16） were significantly older than CHC patients with mild fibrosis （n = 16）（P = 0.024）. The serum iron indices, increased serum iron store and positive hepatic iron stain were not significantly different between the two groups. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the age at biopsy was an independent predictor of severe hepatic fibrosis （Odds ratio = 1.312; P = 0.035）. The positive hepatic iron stain was significantly associated with the values of alanine aminotransferase （ALT）（P = 0.017）, ferritin （P = 0.008）, serum iron （P = 0.019） and transferrin saturation （P = 0.003）. The ferritin level showed significant correlation with the value ofALT （r = 0.531; P = 0.003）, iron （r = 0.467; P = 0.011） and transferrin saturation （r = 0.556; P = 0.002）. CONCLUSION： Our findings suggest that the severity of hepatitis C virus （HCV）-related liver injury is associated with patient age at biopsy. Both serum iron indices and hepatic iron deposition show correlation with serum indices of chronic liver disease but are not related to grade and stage of liver histology.

The performance of a classical damping matrix, constructed either from the use of initial structural properties or current structural properties, in the step-by-step solution of a nonlinear multiple degree of freedom （MDOF） system is analytically evaluated. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical examples. Consequently, some conclusions are drawn from these analytical results that might be considered as rough guidelines for practical applications. It is found that a classical damping matrix constructed from initial structural properties is adequate for practical applications, since it has approximately the same damping effect as obtained by current structural properties and is more efficient in terms of computing.

Optimal design theory for linear tuned mass dampers （TMD） has been thoroughly investigated, but is still under development for nonlinear TMDs. In this paper, optimization procedures in the time domain are proposed for design of a TMD with nonlinear viscous damping. A dynamic analysis of a structure implemented with a nonlinear TMD is conducted first. Optimum design parameters for the nonlinear TMD are searched using an optimization method to minimize the performance index. The feasibility of the proposed optimization method is illustrated numerically by using the taipei 101 structure implemented with TMD. The sensitivity analysis shows that the performance index is less sensitive to the damping coefficient than to the frequency ratio. Time history analysis is conducted using the taipei 101 structure implemented with different TMDs under wind excitation. For both linear and nonlinear TMDs, the comfort requirements for building occupants are satisfied as long as the TMD is properly designed. It was found that as the damping exponent increases, the relative displacement of the TMD decreases but the damping force increases.

AIM： To evaluate whether DCP is better than AFP for differentiating HCC from nonmalignant liver disease and further evaluate the usefulness of DCP in early diagnosis of small HCC. METHODS： Serum DCP and AFP levels were determined in 127 patients. Among these patients, 32 were with noncirrhotic chronic hepatitis, 34 were with compensated cirrhosis, and 61 were with HCC. The cut-off value for the DCP and AFP were set as 40 mAU/mL and 20 ng/mL, respectively. To compare the diagnostic value of DCP and AFP in distinguishing HCC from nonmalignant chronic liver disease, receiver operating characteristic （ROC） curves were constructed for each assay. RESULTS： The accuracy, sensitivity, and specifidty of DCP were higher than AFP in detecting HCC （81.9%, 77%, and 86.4% vs 68.5%, 59%, and 77.3%, respectively）. The area under the ROC （AUROC） curves revealed that DCP had a better accuracy than AFP in diagnosis of HCC （0.85 [95%CI, 0.78-0.91] vs 0.73 [95%CI, 0.65-0.81], P= 0.013）. In 39 patients with solitary HCC, the positive rates of DCP were 100% in patients with tumor size larger than 3 cm, 66.7% in patients with tumor size 2-3 cm and 50% in patients with tumor size less than 2 cm. The positive rates of AFP in patients with tumor size larger than 3 cm, 2-3 crn and less than 2 cm were 55.6%, 50%, and 33.3%, respectively. The median level of DCP in HCC patients with tumor size larger than 3 cm was significantly higher than those with tumor size 2-3 cm and those with the size of less than 2 cm. CONCLUSION： Our study indicates that DCP has a better diagnostic value than AFP in differentiating HCC from nonmalignant chronic liver disease. DCP has not only a stronger correlation with HCC than AFP in tumor size but also more effectiveness than AFP in detecting small size of HCC.

In recent years, e-learning system has been adopted as a training tool in many firms, as it can help employees to complete training in a short time and at a low cost. Within this context, since 2003 the Industrial Development Bureau （IDB） of the Ministry of Economic Affairs （MOEA） in Taiwan sponsored more than 50 enterprises each year to help them implement customized e-learning systems. Past research on e-learning mostly focused on one criterion and adopted regression approach, such as examining the relationships between satisfaction or continued usage intentions and various antecedent factors. Although the regression method could uncover the significant factors of e-learning adoption, they can not show the can （weighting） of each factor, and thus firms cannot allocate the optimal levels of resources. To overcome this problem, this study collected factors related to finns implementing customized e-learning systems from a review of the literature and expert opinions, and then constructed a hierarchical factor table. Based on the appropriateness and independence of factors, and as assessed by experts in the project promotion office of the IDB, e-learning solution providers and project leaders of the IDB sponsored enterprises, this paper then designed an Analytical Hierarchy Process （AHP） format questionnaire and sent it to these same experts to gather their responses. The factor weightings were derived based on the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process （FAHP） method. Finally, analysis of key factors was performed and recommendations provided. Based on the results for this work, service industry firms with limited resources can achieve proper resource allocation and more quickly and successfully adopt customized e-Learning systems.

Cenozoic （Miocene to Pleistocene） basaltic rocks in Jiangsu province of eastern China include olivine tholeiite and alkali basalt. We present major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic data as well as Ar-Ar dating of these basalts to discuss the petrogenesis of the basalts and identify the geological processes beneath the study area. On the basis of chemical compisitions and Ar-Ar dating of Cenonoic basaltic rocks from Jiangsu province, we suggest that these basalts may belong to the same magmatic system. The alkali basalts found in Jiangsu province have higher ~FeO, MgO, CaO, Na20, TiO2 and P205 and incompatible elements, but lower A1203 and compatible elements contents than olivine tholeiite which may be caused by fractional crystallization of olivine, pyroxene and minor plagioclase. In Jiangsu basaltic rocks the incompatible elements increase with decreasing MgO/~FeO ratios. The primitive mantle-normalized incompatible elements and chondrite-normalized REE patterns of basaltic rocks found in Jiangsu province are similar to those of OIB. Partial loss of the mantle lithosphere accompanied by rising of asthenospheric mantle may accelerate the generation of the basaltic magma. The 143Nd/144Nd vs. S7Sr/S6Sr plot indicates a mixing of a depleted asthenospheric mantle source and an EM1 component in the study area. According to Shaw＇s equation, the basalts from Jiangsu province may be formed by 1%-5% partial melting of a depleted asthenospheric mantle source. On the basis of Ar-Ar ages of this study and the fractional crystallization model proposed by Brooks and Nielsen （1982）, we suggest that basalts from Jiangsu province may belong to a magmatic system with JF-2 as the primitive magma which has undergone fractional crystallization and evolved progressively to produce other types of basalts.

Data mining has been successfully applied in many fields to find useful information stored in vast databases. Market segmentation, which segments data into homogenous clusters by using cluster analysis, is among the most important of the applications in data mining. In this study, we propose a clustering system which integrates particle swarm optimization and honey bee mating optimization methods （PSHBMO）. Simulations for a benchmark test function show that our proposed method is better equipped to find the global optimum than other well-known clustering algorithms. Finally, the proposed clustering system is applied to a real-world consumer electronic company to perform market segmentation via the RFM model.
