The study investigated the genetic variation of Parachanna obscura from five rivers(Anambra,Ibbi,Imo,Katsina-Ala and Ogun)in Nigeria using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 *** was extracted from 19,22,16,18 and 21 fin clips per river population,respectively and subjected to polymerase chain reaction.A total of 96 sequences,each with 671 bp were obtained with 38(5.6%)polymorphic,27(3.8%)parsimoniously informative and 659(98.2%)conserved *** nucleotide composition was C=28.07%,T=29.43%,A=22.18%,G=20.32%.A total of 40 haplotypes with 38 unique sequences as well as 24 substitutions with 22 transversions and two transitions were *** diversity among populations ranged from 0.00184 to 0.00888 representing Ibbi and Imo,respectively while haplotype diversity ranged from 0.77056 to 0.95000 also,from Ibbi and Imo,*** of molecular variance showed that the intra-population variation accounted for 50.05%.Topology from phylogenetic analyses revealed that *** from Imo River was distinctly different from the rest.

AIM: To clarify the association between physical activity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in nonobese and obese people. METHODS: A Swedish population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted. Participants aged 40-79 years were randomly selected from the Swedish Registry of the Total Population. Data on physical activity, GERD, body mass index (BMI) and the covariates age, gender, comorbidity, education, sleeping problems, and tobacco smoking were obtained using validated questionnaires. GERD was self-reported and defined as heartburn or regurgitation at least once weekly, and having at least moderate problems from such symptoms. Frequency of physical activity was categorized into three groups: (1) "high" (several times/week); (2) "intermediate" (approximately once weekly); and (3) "low" (1-3 times/mo or less). Analyses were stratified for participants with "normal weight" (BMI 30 kg/m 2 ). Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusted for potential confounding by covariates. RESULTS: Of 6969 eligible and randomly selected individuals, 4910 (70.5%) participated. High frequency of physical activity was reported by 2463 (50%) participants, GERD was identified in 472 (10%) participants, and obesity was found in 680 (14%). There were 226 (5%) individuals with missing information about BMI. Normal weight, overweight and obese participants were similar regarding distribution of gender and tobacco smoking status, while obese participants were on average slightly older, had fewer years of education, more comorbidity, slightly more sleeping problems, lower frequency of physical activity, and higher occurrence of GERD. Among the 2146 normal-weight participants, crude point estimates indicated a decreased risk of GERD among individuals with high frequency of physical activity (OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.39-0.89), compared to low

We present the results of eyestalk extirpation experiments performed on the fiddler crab, Uca triangularis at seasons of molting and reproduction, with a view to have a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of these two highly energy-demanding processes. Bilateral eyestalk ablation resulted in precocious acceleration of both molting and reproduction, irrespective of the season at which each experiment was conducted. The rate of accelerated ovarian growth, however, was maximum if the eyestalk ablation was conducted during August–January, the breeding season in the wild, or in February–May(molting-reproductive season), wherein a section of the wild population would be engaged in molting and another section in breeding. The highest degree of precocious molt acceleration, on the other hand, was obtained during June–July when the population was primarily engaged in molting, but with no reproductive activity. The precocious oocyte maturation(due to de-eyestalking) was minimal in June–July. Significantly, the eyestalk ablation also resulted in a dramatic increase in the hemolymph ecdysteroid titer, revealing that a high ecdysteroid titer would have no restraining influence on vitellogenesis. No spawning was, however, observed among de-eyestalked females, even though their final oocyte size surpassed the size of the normal mature oocytes, implying that spawning is not exclusively under the control of eyestalk hormones. A comparative study performed on the vitelline components of the experimentals and the controls revealed that the precociously incorporated yolk under eyestalk ablation was biochemically impoverished. These results indicate that throughout the annual cycle, both the somatic and the reproductive growth of U. triangularis are under the influence of inhibitory principles from the eyestalks. Objective： Curative gastric cancer surgery entails removal of the primary tumor with adequate margins including regional lymph nodes. European randomized controlled trials with recruitment in the 1990＇s reported increased morbidity and mortality for D2 compared to D 1. Here, we examined the extent of lymphadenectomy during gastric cancer surgery and the associated risk for postoperative complications and mortality using the strengths of a population-based study. Methods： A prospective nationwide study conducted within the National Register of Esophageal and Gastric Cancer. All patients in Sweden from 2006 to 2013 who underwent gastric cancer resections with curative intent were included. Patients were categorized into DO, D I, or D I ＋/D2, and analyzed regarding postoperative morbidity and mortality using multivariable logistic regression. Results： In total, 349 （31.7%） patients had a DO, 494 （44.9%） DI, and 258 （23.4%） DI＋/D2 lymphadenectomy. The 30-d postoperative complication rates were 25.5%, 25.1% and 32.2 % （DO, D I and D1 ＋/D2, respectively）, and 90-d mortality rates were 8.3%, 4.3 % and 5.8%. After adjustment for confounders, in mukivariable analysis, there were no significant differences in risk for postoperative complications between the lymphadenectomy groups. For 90-d mortality, there was a lower risk for D1 vs. DO. Conclusions： The majority of gastric cancer resections in Sweden have included only a limited lymphadenectomy （DO and DI）. More extensive lymphadenectomy （DI＋/D2） seemed to have no impact on postoperative morbidity or mortality.

Aim： To find an in vitro system for the measurement of the androgenic effects of different extracts of Hibiscus macranthus （Malvaceae） and Basella alba （Basellaceae）. Methods： The production of testosterone from testes slices incubated in two media, either Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing 0.5% Bovine serum albumin （BSA） or Dubecco＇s Modified Eagle＇s medium-F12 Ham nutrient mixture （DME/Ham F12）, under a mixture of 5% CO2 in 95% air was determined either in the presence or absence of cofactors and Hibiscus macranthus plus Basella alba （HMBA） extracts. Results： The testosterone production was increased in testes slices incubated in DME/Ham F12 medium in response to the cofactors （49%） and aqueous extracts （34%-60% according to dilutions）. Under the same atmospheric conditions, there was no positive response of the testes slices to either cofactor or HMBA extract stimulation in Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing 0.5% BSA, In further investigations related to the effect of HMBA, the DME/ Ham F12 medium was used. The results obtained from the in vitro test showed that the activity was present mainly in methylene chloride and methanol, since these extracts induced an increase in testosterone production by testes slices. Conclusion： The testes slice system is suitable to be used for further in vitro investigations of the isolation of androgenic bioactive components of plants. （Asian J Androl 2006 Jan; 8： 111-114）

The waltzing guinea pig may be a good model to investigate if genetic factor can change the sensitivity in noise-induced hearing loss. A total of 34 waltzig guinea pigs were studied and we found that there is no any significant increased sensitivity to noise trauma if the age-induced hearing loss was considered in waltz-ing guinea pig.

We present a compilation of all myxomycetes recorded from Papua New Guinea(PNG)and New Caledonia(NC).Specimens were collected during field trips in September 1983–January 1984 to both territories and in August 1991,October 2007,and April 2009 to *** and dung samples for moist chamber cultures were collected during the field trips in September 1983–January 1984(PNG and NC)and in August 1991 and October 2007(NC).In addition,information from previous publications and unpublished specimens in the herbarium at the Plant Protection Instituted in Port Moresby,PNG,are included.A total of 180 species are *** the 63 species from PNG 51 are new to the country,and 123 of the 149 species from NC are new to the territory.

Background:Persistent organic pollutants(POPs)are subject of particular attention and in-depth studies which demonstrate their toxicity towards humans and biotope in *** are therefore addressed by the stockholm Convention globally with human milk or blood as matrix for effectiveness ***:The objective of this study was to assess plasma concentrations of certain chlorinated POPs in subjects from the urban population in ***:A total number of 207 adult subjects were recruited in Algiers and plasma concentrations of Hexachlorobenzene(HCB),p,p’Dichlorodiphenyl DichloroEthylene(4,40 DDE)and Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCBs)were determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection(GC-MS).Results:The nanogram per gram of lipids(ng g^(-1) lipids)geometric means of plasma concentrations of studied compounds were:6.09 for HCB,131.60 for 4,40 DDE,8.61 for PCB153,7.95 for PCB138 and 8.39 for *** 180,PCB 153 and PCB 138 showed a high correlation with each other(r>0.5).4,40 DDE concentrations were significantly higher in women and in subject with low educational level,whereas POPs were higher in older participants(>65 years old).Organochlorine pesticides(OCPs)and PCB153 concentrations were higher in overweight and obese *** was no significant difference between POPs concentrations according to breastfeeding history,smoking status or fish ***:Chlorinated POPs were detected in the blood plasma of adults living in *** concentrations were consistent with those of several studies in the ***,further investigations are needed to assess the exposure profile of subjects living near contaminated sites.
