White grubs, Holotrichia rustica and Holotrichia mucida （Coleoptera： Scarabaeidae） as pests of teak （Tectona grandis L. f.） seedlings

Field observations were carried out between 2002 and 2005 on bio-ecology of white grubs infesting teak （Tectona grandis Linn. f.） seedlings at Ramdongari Forest Nursery, Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra, nagpur in central India. The study collected the data required for an integrated pest management strategy against the white grubs. The species damaging teak seedlings were Holotrichia rustica （Burmeister） and H. mucida Gyllenhal. The beetles （adults） of both these species began to emerge just after the pre-monsoon showers and when the relative humidity had risen rapidly over several days, but before the first monsoon rains. While the adults fed and mated on naturally growing bushes of Ziziphus jujuba, Z mauritiana, Z. xylopyra, Acacia leucophloea and A. catechu immediately after the emergence from the teak beds in the nursery, the immature stages （grubs） of both species fed on roots of the teak seedling, leading to plant death. This is the first report of （i） damage caused to teak seedlings by grubs ofH. rustica and H. mucida, and （ii） of *** and Z. mauritiana being hosts for the beetles ofH. mucida and H, rustica. It is also the first detailed report on the field bio-ecology of the H. rustica and H. mucida as major pests ofteak. White grubs are among the toughest-to-manage pests of economic importance and information presented here on the pest incidence and damage ofH. rustica and H. mucida is important to researchers and nursery field managers for the management of these pests on teak.

Enhancing the efficiency of nitrogen removing bacterial population to a wide range of C:N ratio(1.5:1 to 14:1)for simultaneous C&N removal

High C:N ratio in the wastewater limits biological nitrogen removal(BNR),especially in anammox based *** present study attempts to improve the COD tolerance of the BNR process by associating methanogens with nitrogen removing bacterial(NRB)*** new microbial system coined as‘Methammox’,was investigated for simultaneous removal of COD(C)and ammonia(N)at C:N ratio 1.5:1 to 14:*** ammonia removal rate(11.5 mg N/g VSS/d)and the COD removal rates(70.6 mg O/g VSS/d)of Methammox was close to that of the NRB(11.1 mg N/g VSS/d)and the methanogenic populations(77.9 mg O/g VSS/d),*** activities established that these two populations existed simultaneously and independently in‘Methammox’.Further studies in biofilm reactor fetched a balanced COD and ammonia removal(55%–60%)at a low C:N ratio(£2:1)and high C:N ratio(≥9:1).The population abundance of methanogens was reasonably constant,but the nitrogen removal shifted from mixotrophy to heterotrophy as the C:N ratio shifted from low(C:N£2:1)to high(C:N≥9:1).The reduced autotrophic NRB(ammonia-and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and Anammox)population at a high C:N ratio was compensated by the fermentative group that could carry out denitrification *** functional plasticity of the Methammox system to adjust to a broad C:N ratio opens new frontiers in biological nitrogen removal of high COD containing wastewaters.

Antioxidant phenolic compounds from seeds of Hordeum vulgare *** diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective:To examine the effects of hydroalcoholic extract and fractions of Hordeum vulgare Linn.(***,Da Mai)on streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic nephropathy in Sprague-Dawley rat ***:The study involved preliminary phytochemical screening of extract and fractions,estimation of secondary metabolites,chromatographic studies using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),antioxidant potential using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),nitric oxide radical scavenging and reducing power methods along with the determination of potential against diabetic nephropathy in STZ-induced rat ***:The phytochemical evaluation of the hydroalcoholic extract of *** and fractions revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents such as alkaloids,saponins,tannins,flavonoids,and *** chromatographic analysis indicated the peak complementing marker compound epicatechin and significant antioxidant activity in the extract and aqueous ***-induced rats showed abnormal levels of serum albumin,creatinine,total cholesterol,blood urea nitrogen(BUN),and triglycerides,and urine albumin and creatinine,which returned to normal after 8 weeks of treatment with hydroalcoholic extract(400 mg/kg)and aqueous fraction(50 mg/kg)of ***:Hydroalcoholic extract(400 mg/kg)and aqueous fraction(50 mg/kg)of *** have significant antioxidant potential and positive effects on diabetic *** fractionation and optimization increase the concentration of polyphenols in aqueous extract,causing a decrease in the dose required for effects against diabetic nephropathy.

Background The emergence of pink bollworm(PBW),Pectinophora gossypiella(Saunders)(Lepidoptera:Gelechiidae),in cotton due to Bt resistance and concealed feeding habit has created a need for alternative,eco-friendly,and cost-effective control *** study aimed to evaluate the bio-efficacy and reproductive potential of two native strains of entomopathogenic nematodes(EPNs),Heterorhabditis indica,namely CICR-HI-CL and CICR-HI-MN,against PBW larvae and pupae under in-vitro *** The larval assay revealed that strain CICR-HI-CL exhibited higher potency than strain CICR-HI-MN against 2nd,3rd,and 4thinstar larvae,with median lethal dose(LD50)values of 5.45,4.45,and 4.60 infective juveniles(IJs)per larva,*** case of pupal bioassay,both EPN strains demonstrated greater virulence when applied directly(LD50values:29.65 and 73.88 IJs per pupa for strains CICR-HI-CL and CICR-HI-MN,respectively)compared to soil application(147.84 and 272.38 IJs per pupa).Both EPN strains successfully penetrated and reproduced on 4thinstar larvae,resulting in maximum production of 19.28 and 20.85 lakh IJs per larva in the next generation when inoculated at 30 IJs per *** The present study has generated useful information on the virulence and reproductive potential of two strains of EPN ***(CICR-HI-CL and CICR-HI-MN)against PBW,a dreaded pest of *** virulence and reproductive potential of EPN strains demonstrated their ability to multiply,sustain and perpetuate on larval and pupal stages of *** knowledge generated will help formulate effective management strategies for PBW with the inclusion of EPN as a potential biological control *** soil-dwelling life stages viz.,last instar hibernating larvae and pupae of PBW can be the ideal weak links to make a successful use of *** for sustainable management of PBW in the cotton ***,before taking these EPN strains to field for managing PBW,detailed studies investigati

Optimization of Groundwater Level Monitoring Network Using GIS-based Geostatistical Method and Multi-parameter Analysis:A Case Study in Wainganga Sub-basin,India

Groundwater is one of the most important resources, its monitoring and optimized management has now become the priority to satisfy the demand of rapidly increasing population. In many developing countries, optimized groundwater level monitoring networks are rarely designed to build up a strong groundwater level data base, and to reduce operation time and cost. The paper presents application of geostatistical method to optimize existing network of observation wells for 18 sub-watersheds within the Wainganga Sub-basin located in the central part of India. The average groundwater level fluctuation(GWLF) from 37 observation wells is compared with parameters like lineament density, recharge, density of irrigation wells, land use and hydrogeology(LiRDLH) of Wainganga Sub-basin and analyzed stochastically in Geographic Information System(GIS) environment using simple, ordinary, disjunctive and universal kriging methods. Semivariogram analyses have been performed separately for all kriging methods to fit the best theoretical model with experimental model. Results from gaussian, spherical, exponential and circular theoretical models were compared with those of experimental models obtained from the groundwater level data. Spatial analyses conclude that the exponential semivariogram model obtained from ordinary kriging gives the best fit model. Study demonstrates that ordinary kriging gives the optimal solution and additional number of observation wells can be added utilizing the error variance for optimal design of groundwater level monitoring networks. This study describes the use of Geostatistics methods in GIS to predict the groundwater level and upgrade groundwater level monitoring networks from the randomly distributed observation wells considering multiple parameters such as GWLF and LiRDLH. Luminescence properties of Gd^(3+) containing glasses for ultra-violet(UV) light

Effect of Gd2O3 addition on optical properties of 27.5 Li2O-72.5 B2O3 glass systems was studied. Density, differential thermal analysis （DTA）, optical absorption spectra and luminescence technique were used to characterize the prepared glasses. Emis- sion spectra showed two band 6p7/2→8S7/2 （311.5 nm） and 6p5/2→8S7/2 （305 nm） under the excitation of 274 nm. The intense emission at 311.5 nm suggested that these glasses could be useful as source of narrowband UV light.

A Comparison of SWAT Model Calibration Techniques for Hydrological Modeling in the Ganga River Watershed

The Ganga River, the longest river in India, is stressed by extreme anthropogenic activity and climate change, particularly in the Varanasi region. Anticipated climate changes and an expanding populace are expected to further impede the efficient use of water. In this study, hydrological modeling was applied to Soil and Water Assessment Tool （SWAT） modeling in the Ganga catchment, over a region of 15 621.612 km2 in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh. The primary goals of this study are： ① To test the execution and applicability of the SWAT model in anticipating runoff and sediment yield; and ② to compare and determine the best calibration algorithm among three popular algorithms-sequential uncertainty fitting version 2 （SUFI-2）, the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation （GLUE）, and par-allel solution （ParaSol）. The input data used in the SWAT were the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission （SRTM） digital elevation model （DEM）, Landsat-8 satellite imagery, soil data, and daily meteorological data. The watershed of the study area was delineated into 46 sub-watersheds, and a land use/land cover （LULC） map and soil map were used to create hydrological response units （HRUs）. Models utilizing SUFI- 2, GLUE, and ParaSol methods were constructed, and these algorithms were compared based on five cat-egories： their objective functions, the concepts used, their performances, the values of P-factors, and the values of R-factors. As a result, it was observed that SUFI-2 is a better performer than the other two algo-rithms for use in calibrating Indian watersheds, as this method requires fewer runs for a computational model and yields the best results among the three algorithms. ParaSol is the worst performer among the three algorithms.
