Plant viruses are a group of intracellular pathogens that persistently threaten global food security.Significant advances in plant virology have been achieved by Chinese scientists over the last 20 years,including basic research and technologies for preventing and controlling plant viral diseases.Here,we review these milestones and advances,including the identification of new crop-infecting viruses,dissection of pathogenic mechanisms of multiple viruses,examination of multilayered interactions among viruses,their host plants,and virus-transmitting arthropod vectors,and in-depth interrogation of plantencoded resistance and susceptibility determinants.Notably,various plant virus-based vectors have also been successfully developed for gene function studies and target gene expression in plants.We also recommend future plant virology studies in china.

Quantifying the agreement and accuracy characteristics of four satellite-based LULC products for cropland classification in china

Various land use and land cover(LULC)products have been produced over the past decade with the development of remote sensing technology.Despite the differences in LULC classification schemes,there is a lack of research on assessing the accuracy of their application to croplands in a unified framework.Thus,this study evaluated the spatial and area accuracies of cropland classification for four commonly used global LULC products(i.e.,MCD12Q1V6,GlobCover2009,FROM-GLC and GlobeLand30)based on the harmonised FAO criterion,and quantified the relationships between four factors(i.e.,slope,elevation,field size and crop system)and cropland classification agreement.The validation results indicated that MCD12Q1 and GlobeLand30 performed well in cropland classification regarding spatial consistency,with overall accuracies of 94.90 and 93.52%,respectively.The FROMGLC showed the worst performance,with an overall accuracy of 83.17%.Overlaying the cropland generated by the four global LULC products,we found the proportions of complete agreement and disagreement were 15.51 and 44.72% for the cropland classification,respectively.High consistency was mainly observed in the Northeast china Plain,the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain and the northern part of the Middle-lower Yangtze Plain,china.In contrast,low consistency was detected primarily on the eastern edge of the northern and semiarid region,the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and southern china.Field size was the most important factor for mapping cropland.For area accuracy,compared with china Statistical Yearbook data at the provincial scale,the accuracies of different products in descending order were:GlobeLand30,FROM-GLC,MCD12Q1,and GlobCover2009.The cropland classification schemes mainly caused large area deviations among the four products,and they also resulted in the different ranks of spatial accuracy and area accuracy among the four products.Our results can provide valuable suggestions for selecting cropland products at the national or provincial scale and help cropland mapping and reconstr

Resilience effects for household food expenditure and dietary diversity in rural western china

A more resilient livelihood is increasingly recognized as an efficient way to improve vulnerable households’food security and optimize their dietary decisions.This study quantifies rural household resilience in western china,identifies the three pillars(absorptive capacity,adaptive capacity,and transformative capacity)contribution to resilience,and then establishes the estimated Resilience Capacity Index(RCI)linked with food security and dietary diversity supported by the multiple indicator multiple cause(MIMIC)model.Results show that,despite geographical heterogeneity,the RCI consistently increased from 2015 to 2021.Households with a higher RCI inheriting better capacity to deal with risk and shocks are significantly and positively correlated with increasing food expenditure and diversifying food choices.It can be because resilient households will allocate more money to food expenditure instead of saving for livelihood uncertainty.Thus,policymakers can provide more incentives for rural households to adopt more dynamic and effective risk management strategies.This,in turn,could yield positive spillover effects by preventing human capital loss associated with dietary-related chronic diseases and mortality.

Linguistic landscape and its impacts on place-making in mountain destination:A case of Mogan Mountain Town of Huzhou City,china

The place and placeness are believed to be a crucial perspective for comprehending the transformative dynamics of tourist destinations in the context of globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry.As the material carrier of language,linguistic landscape is an intermediary for people to endow emotions and personalities into the place,becoming an effective path for exploring the place-making in a certain area.Mogan Mountain is a famous national tourist resort,which is located in Mogan Mountain Town,Deqing County,Huzhou City,china.This is a good case area for studying the relationship between linguistic landscape and placemaking in tourist destinations.There are two theories that form the theoretical foundation of the study,namely the place and the geosemiotics.Firstly,the results showed the overall style of the linguistic landscape.Multilingual labelling(52.7%),official signs(55.3%),and standardized Chinese characters predominantly shaped the linguistic landscape,with English and other languages being complementary.Secondly,from the perspective of three dimensions of the geosemiotics framework,such as inscription,language preference,and placement position,we conduct a comprehensive semiotic analysis of the linguistic landscape,which encompasses diverse facets such as fonts,materials,shifts in state,text vectors,and symmetrical arrangements.Finally,we explore the influence of linguistic landscapes on the place-making of Mogan Mountain through the dimensions of location,locale,and sense of place.The information on linguistic landscapes indicates the geographical location.These linguistic landscapes play an important role in constructing the language order,nostalgic atmosphere,exotic atmosphere,and elegant and tasteful lifestyle of the public space in Mogan Mountain.Readers of linguistic landscapes,including tourists and residents,generate and identify with the unique sense of place in Mogan Mountain.These linguistic landscapes construct the destination placeness of Mogan Mountain that combines bot

Magnitude and direction of temperature variability affect hospitalization for myocardial infarction and stroke:population-based evidence from Guangzhou,china

Relationships between nonoptimal temperatures and cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality have been well documented.However,evidence of the association between temperature variability(TV)and CVD morbidity is limited.This study aimed to quantify the risk and burden of CVD-related hospitalization associated with the magnitude and direction of TV.Data on meteorology and population-based hospitalizations for myocardial infarction(MI)and stroke were collected in Guangzhou,china,from 2013 to 2017.Hourly temperature variability(HTV)was measured as the standard deviation of hourly temperature records over specific exposure days.The direction(upward or downward)of HTV was defined as the average daily mean temperature change relative to that of the previous day during the exposure period.Quasi-Poisson regression was applied to assess the impact of HTV after adjusting for the daily mean temperature,and the hospitalization fractions attributable to HTV were calculated.A 1℃-increase in HTV was significantly associated with a 2.24%and 1.72%increase in hospitalizations for MI and hemorrhagic stroke(HS)at lag 0–1 d,respectively,and a 1.55%increase in hospitalizations for ischemic stroke(IS)at lag 0–3 d.During the study period,5.99%,4.64%,and 4.53%of MI,HS,and IS hospitalizations,respectively,were attributable to HTV.The upward TV exerts acute effects on CVD hospital admissions,whereas the impact of downward TV generally lags.These findings highlight the importance of the magnitude and direction of temperature fluctuations,in addition to the mean level,in assessing the adverse health impacts of temperature variations.

Background Culex pipiens pallens andCulex pipiens quinquefasciatus are the dominant species ofCulex mosquitoes in china and important disease vectors. Long-term use of insecticides can cause mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene of mosquitoes, but little is known about the current status and evolutionary origins ofvgsc gene in different geographic populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current status ofvgsc genes inCx. p. pallens andCx. p. quinquefasciatus in china and to investigate the evolutionary inheritance of neighboring downstream introns of thevgsc gene to determine the impact of insecticides on long-term evolution.Methods Sampling was conducted from July to September 2021 in representative habitats of 22 provincial-level administrative divisions in china. Genomic DNA was extracted from 1308 mosquitoes, the IIS6 fragment of thevgsc gene on the nerve cell membrane was amplified using polymerase chain reaction, and the sequence was used to evaluate allele frequency and knockdown resistance (kdr) frequency. MEGA 11 was used to construct neighborjoining (NJ) tree. PopART was used to build a TCS network.Results There were 6 alleles and 6 genotypes at the L1014 locus, which included the wild-type alleles TTA/L and CTA/L and the mutant alleles TTT/F, TTC/F, TCT/S and TCA/S. The geographic populations with akdr frequency less than 20.00% were mainly concentrated in the regions north of 38° N, and the geographic populations with akdr frequency greater than 80.00% were concentrated in the regions south of 30° N.kdr frequency increased with decreasing latitude. And within the same latitude, the frequency ofkdr in large cities is relatively high. Mutations were correlated with the number of introns. The mutant allele TCA/S has only one intron, the mutant allele TTT/F has three introns, and the wild-type allele TTA/L has 17 introns.Conclusions Cx. p. pallens andCx. p. quinquefasciatus have developed resistance to insecticides in most regions of china. Role of adaptation measures in addressing heatwave exposure in china

Heatwave exposure has increased dramatically because of climate warming and population growth,along with their interactive effects.However,effective adaptation measures can reduce these impacts.Nonetheless,the dynamic changes,regional inequality in adaptive capacity and their potential contributions to reducing exposure in the future remain unclear.This study quantifies the impact of adaptive capacity and underscores regional variations in heatwave magnitudes,population exposure and adaptation levels in china.We projected the future adaptive capacity using air-conditioner penetration,factoring in climate cooling requirements and individuals'purchasing power.Utilising population and gross domestic product(GDP)data from four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSP1,SSP2,SSP3 and SSP5)and daily temperature data from four SSP-based emission scenarios(SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5),we estimated heatwave duration,population exposure and avoided impacts through adaptation across china and its sub-regions.Results show a substantial increase in heatwave duration in Southwest and Southern china,especially under the SSP5-8.5 scenario,with a projection of 163.2±36.7 d during 2081-2100.Under the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 scenario,total exposure reaches 156.4±76.8 billion person d per year,which is the highest among all scenarios and 23 times greater than that in 1986-2005 without adaptation.Upon considering adaptation measures,a noteworthy reduction in population exposure is observed,especially in the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 and SSP5JSSP5-8.5 scenarios,with reductions of(62.6±3.9)%and(65.8±5.1)%,respectively,compared with the scenario without adaptation during 2081-2100.Remarkable regional disparities in avoided impacts are also evident,with variations of up to 50%across different regions.The implementation of effective and environmentally friendly adaptation measures can notably address climate change,thereby alleviating the profound threats posed to human well-being.

Innovation and Firm Co-ownership Network in china’s Electric Vehicle Industry

Firms are embedded in complex networks,where diverse ideas combine and generate new ideas.Shareholders of firms are of-ten seen as critical external resources that have significant influence on firm innovation.The current literature tends to focus on the rela-tionship between firms and their shareholders,while paying less attention to the connections between firms with the same shareholders.This article identifies two types of network spillover effects,intra-city network effect and inter-city network effect,by visualizing the co-ownership networks in china’s electric vehicle(EV)industry.We find that firms with the same shareholders,which are defined as co-owned EV firms,are more innovative than non-co-owned ones.Furthermore,there are two dominant types of firm co-ownership ties formed by corporate and financial institution shareholders.While corporate shareholders help exploiting local tacit knowledge,financial institutions are more active in bridging inter-city connections.The conclusion is confirmed at both firm and city levels.This paper theor-izes the firm co-ownership network as a new form of institutional proximity and tested the result empirically.For policy consideration,we have emphasized the importance of building formal or informal inter-firm network,and the government should further enhance the knowledge flow channel by institutional construction.

How geographic accessibility and rural governance mitigate the impact of multiple risks on rural households' well-being: Evidence from the Dabie Mountains in china

Despite previous studies on the interconnectedness of livelihood risks and human well-being, limited emphasis has been placed on the influence of geographic accessibility and rural governance on the well-being of rural households. Furthermore, the interplay between geographic accessibility, rural governance, and livelihood risk remains inadequately explored. Based on 522 household samples collected in the Dabie Mounand ordinary least squares regression, this study examines the influence of multiple risks on the subjective well-being of rural households by investigating the moderating roles played by geographic accessibility and rural governance. The results show that(1) multiple risk factors have a significant negative effect on rural households' well-being(β=-0.219, p<0.01);(2) geographic accessibility has a weak positive effect on rural households' well-being(β=0.064, p<0.1) compared to rural governance, which plays a larger positive role(β=0.228, p<0.01);and(3) geographic accessibility has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between multiple risks and rural households' well-being, decreasing the adverse impact of multiple risks on households' well-being. Our findings suggest that geographic accessibility and rural governance have positive implications for enhancing the well-being of rural households. The findings provide policy insight into mitigating livelihood risks and their negative impacts on household well-being in mountainous regions worldwide.

Spatial Differentiation and Convergence Trend of High-quality Development Level of china’s Tourism Economy

This paper aims to interpret the connotation of high-quality development of tourism economy(HQTE)from the perspective of the new development concepts of innovation,coordination,green,openness and sharing,and then to evaluate the spatial differenti-ation of china’s HQTE based on provincial panel data from 2009 to 2018.Specifically,we employ the spatial convergence model to ex-plore the absolute and conditionalβconvergence trends of HQTE in the whole country and the eastern,central and western regions of china.Our empirical results reveal that:1)within the decade,from 2009 to 2018,regions of china with the highest HQTE index is its eastern region followed by the central region and then the western region,but the fastest growing one is the western region of china fol-lowed by the central region and then the eastern region.2)Whether or not the spatial effect is included,there are absolute and condition-alβconvergence in HQTE in the whole country and aforementioned three regions.3)The degree of government attention as well as the level of economic development and location accessibility are the positive driving factors for the convergence of HQTE in the whole country and the three regions.The degree of marketization and human capital have not passed the significance test either in the whole country or in the three regions.The above conclusions could deepen the understanding of the regional imbalance and spatial conver-gence characteristics of HQTE,clarify the primary development objects,and accomplish the goal of china’s HQTE.
