Aim:Angiotensin Ⅱ is believed to play an important role in tissue repair andremodeling in lungs by the angiotensin type I(AT1)receptor via a number ofpotential ***,the role of the AT1 receptor in early lung injuryhas not been ***:Bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis(PF)in rats was utilized to value the treatment with valsartan,an AT1 receptorantagonist,by measurement of body weight,wet weight of the left lung,hydroxy-proline content,mRNA expression of collagen Ⅰ/Ⅲ,and the degree of fibrosis inlung tissues on d *** injury in the early phase was assessed on d 1,3 and7 by apoptosis,malondialdehyde content,myeloperoxidase activity,inflamma-tory cell count and protein *** converting enzyme(ACE)activ-ity and the AT1 receptor in lung tissues were analyzed by biochemistry methodand Western blotting,***:Valsartan ameliorated PF induced bybleomycin in the rats on d *** bleomycin was injected intratracheally,in-creases in the lung AT1 receptor and ACE activity were observed by d 1,3 and *** injury deteriorated in the early *** reduced the increase of theAT1 receptor,ACE activity and lung injury induced by bleomycin in the ***:These observations suggest that angiotensin Ⅱ may play apotent role in early lung injury via the AT1 ***1 receptor antagonistsshould be assessed as potential new therapies for fibrotic lung disease.

Shunt and devascularization have totally different effects on hemodynamics of the portal venous system , and the actual results of combined shunt and devascularization should be determined by more clinical observations. This study aimed to evaluate effects on hemodynamics of the portal venous system after conventional spleno-renal shunt combined with pericardial devascularization and pericardial devascularization only. METHODS: In 20 patients who had received conventional splenorenal shunt combined with pericardial devascularization(CP) and 18 who had received pericardial devascularization and splenectomy (PCDV), hemodynamic parameters of the portal venous system were studied by magnetic resonance angiography 1 week before and 2 weeks after operation. Free portal pressure was detected continuously by a transducer during the operation. RESULTS: Compared to the preoperative data, a decreased flow of the portal vein (PVF) (563.12±206.4. ml/min vs 1080.63±352.85 ml/min, P30±0.16 cm, P30 mmHg, P4.±309.03 ml/min vs 569.13±178.4. ml/min, P 4.±0.23 cm, P4.60±165.73 ml/min vs 1175.64.4.5.09 ml/min, P4.4.±3.78 mmHg vs 28.80±3.56 mmHg, P3 ml/min vs 521.30±115.82 ml/min, P3.12±206.4. ml/min vs 684.60±165.73 ml/min, P>0.05) was not decreased significantly while FPP (21.50±2.67 mmHg vs 24.4.±3.78 mmHg, P< 0.01) was decreased significantly as compared with that of the PCDV group. AIM: To investigate the role of Fas-FasL pathway in the pathogenesis of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type Ⅰ diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Low dose injections of STZ were used to induce type Ⅰ diabetes mellitus in the CMV-hFasL transgenic mice. Blood glucose concentration was measured with Glucotrand Plus blood glucose test strips. Expression of hFasL was detected by RT-PCR and Western blotting. The severity of insulitis was determined by histological examination. Expressions of IL-1β and TNF-α mRNA in the pancreas were detected by semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis. Fas expression in apoptotic RIN-5F cells was also confirmed by RT-PCR in vitro. RESULTS: hFasL was expressed in the islets of CMV-hFasL transgenic mice. The transgenic mice were sensitive to diabetic induction than the control WT mice. IL-1β and TNF-α expressions in the pancreas of CMV-hFasL transgenic mice were far more than that in WT mice. The semicircular canals, composed of lateral, anterior and posterior canals in the inner ear, are the sensors of equilibrium during head rotation movements in the three-dimensional space. Semicircular canals are filled with endolymph confined by the cupula. The study of the relationship between endolymph flow and cupular deformation is important in revealing the semicircular canals biomechanical behavior. To date, there are few studies focusing on the transient endolymph flow and cupular deformation in response to a head rotation motion. The lateral semicircular canal is mainly responsible for the sense of the horizontal rotation movement. In order to figure out the intricate dynamics in the lateral semicircular canal during the head rotation motion, the time evolutions of both endolymph flow and cupular deformation are analyzed in this article by using a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model. It is shown that the cupular deformation provides cues for understanding the physiology of sensing the head rotation.

Functional brain imaging studies commonly use either resting or passive task states as their control conditions, and typically identify the activation brain region associated with a specific task by subtracting the resting from the active task conditions. Numerous studies now suggest, however, that the resting state may not reflect true mental "rest" conditions. The mental activity that occurs during "rest" might therefore greatly influence the functional neuroimaging observations that are collected through the usual subtracting analysis strategies. Exploring the ongoing mental processes that occur during resting conditions is thus of particular importance for deciphering functional brain mapping results and obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of human brain functions. In this review article, we will mainly focus on the discussion of the current research background of functional brain mapping at resting state and the physiological significance of the available neuroimaging data.

BACKGROUND:Hepatic fibrosis is a necessary step in the development of hepatic *** this study we used lentiviral vector-mediated transfection technology to evaluate the effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma(PPAR-γ) on rat hepatic fibrosis. METHODS:Hepatic fibrosis in rats was induced by CCl4.for 2 weeks(early fibrosis)and 8 weeks(sustained fibrosis).The rats were randomly divided into four groups:normal control, fibrosis,blank vector,and PPAR-γ.They were infected with the recombinant lentiviral expression vector carrying the rat PPAR-γgene by portal vein *** liver of the rats was examined histologically and hydroxyproline was *** vitro primary hepatic stellate cells(HSCs)were infected with the recombinant lentiviral expression vector carrying the rat PPAR-γ*** status of HSC proliferation was measured by the MTT *** protein levels of PPAR-γ,α-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)and type I collagen expression were evaluated by the Western blotting method. RESULTS:In vitro studies revealed that expression of PPAR-γ inhibited expression ofα-SMA and type I collagen in activated HSCs(P<0.01)as well as HSC proliferation(P<0.01).In vivo experiments indicated that in the early hepatic fibrosis group,the hydroxyproline content and the level of collagen I protein in the liver in the PPAR-γtransfected group were not significantly different compared to the hepatic fibrosis group and the blank vector group;whereas the expressions of PPAR-γ andα-SMA were different compared to the hepatic fibrosis group(P<0.01).In the sustained hepatic fibrosis group,there were significant differences in the hydroxyproline content and the expression of PPAR-γ,α-SMA,and type I collagen between each ***:PPAR-γcan inhibit HSC proliferation and hepatic fibrosis,and suppressα-SMA and type I collagen expression.

BACKGROUND:Neurological injury is a common complication in the early period after liver transplantation,posing an enormous obstacle to treatment efficiency and patient *** is a mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel(mitoK ATP) *** has been reported to be effective in reducing brain injury in recent ***,it is still unclear whether nicorandil has cerebral protective effect in patients undergoing liver ***:Fifty patients scheduled for liver transplantation were randomly divided into a nicorandil group(group N)(n=25),in which patients received 10 mg nicorandil through a nasogastric tube 30 minutes before induction of anesthesia,and a control group(group C)(n=25) who received 10 mL normal *** Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) was performed before anesthesia(day 0),and on days 3 and 7 after *** samples were obtained before induction of anesthesia(T1),and at 12(T2) and 36 hours(T3) after surgery for determination of serum neuron-specific enolase(NSE) and S100β protein(S100β) ***:During surgery,5 patients in each group were eliminated due to severe reperfusion or renal ***,20 patients remained in each *** MMSE scores after operation were significantly lower than those before operation in group ***,there was no difference at days 3 and 7 compared with day 0 in group *** NSE concentrations after surgery were significantly higher than baseline(at T1) in both groups,except at T3 in group *** S100β concentration after surgery was significantly higher than baseline(at T1) in both *** MMSE scores at days 3 and 7 in group N were significantly higher than those in group *** concentrations of serum NSE and S100β at T2 and T3 in group N were significantly lower than those in group ***:Oral nicorandil,as a premedication before liver transplantation,improves postoperative MMSE *** also attenuates the increase of NSE and S100β
