Distinguished Effects of Interannual Salinity Variability on the Development of the Central-Pacific El Ni o Events

El Nio events in the central equatorial Pacific (CP) are gaining increased attention,due to their increasing intensity within the global warming *** physical processes have been identified in the climate system that can be responsible for the modulation of El Nio,especially the effects of interannual salinity *** this work,a comprehensive data analysis is performed to illustrate the effects of interannual salinity variability using surface and subsurface salinity fields from the Met Office ENSEMBLES (EN3) quality controlled ocean *** is demonstrated that during the developing phase of an El Nio event,a negative sea surface salinity (SSS) anomaly in the western-central basin acts to freshen the mixed layer (ML),decrease oceanic density in the upper ocean,and stabilize the upper *** related oceanic processes tend to reduce the vertical mixing and entrainment of subsurface water at the base of the ML,which further enhances the warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the El Nio ***,the effects of interannually variable salinity are much more significant during the CP-El Nio than during the eastern Pacific (EP) El Nio,indicating that the salinity effect might be an important contributor to the development of CP-El Nio events.

VISCOELASTIC BEHAVIOR OF THE NON-HOOKE DEFORMATION BEFORE YIELDING IN UNIAXIAL DRAWING OF AMORPHOUS POLY(ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE)

Viscoelastic behavior of the non-Hooke deformation of amorphous PET film before yield was investigated in the temperature region 74-80.5 degreesC around the glass transition temperature. The film specimen was drawn to yield point followed by unloading to zero stress, then the residual deformation was held constant; while the subsequent evolution of the stress was recorded. An induction period was found in the course of stress evolution followed by a stress step-increase. The induction period decreases with increasing drawing temperature with an activation energy of 1.10 MJ/mol.K, which is attributed to the time needed for the relaxation of rubbery deformation through cooperative internal rotations. At temperatures lower than 74 degreesC, there is no stress increase or the induction period becomes too long to be observed. Thus the nature of anelasticity in the non-Hooke region before yielding is attributed to stress induced rubbery deformation. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of Perez' theological model of a series connected Hooks spring and a Voigt element consisting of a parallel connected elastic spring and a dashpot.

Analytical methods of nonlinear dynamics and numerical simulations for the cou-pling equations of Navier-Stokes and flight mechanics are used to study the dynamic behaviour of pitching motions of reentry capsules with the variation of Mach number, and rocking motions of swept wings with the variation of angle of attack. Conditions under which the dynamic instability, Hopf bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation occur are obtained. The node-saddle-node topological structure in the phase portrait, i.e. the state of bi-attractors (attracting basins) is described. The evolving process of dynamic behaviour and flow fields are given. The theories are compared with some numerical simulations conducted by the authors. Besides, some verifiable experi-mental results are cited. The agreement between them is very well.

Preparation and Characterization of Nanocomposite MgFe_2O_4/SiO_2

Nanocomposites MgFe2O4/SiO2 were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method in the presence of N, N-dimethylformamide （DMF）. The formation of pure MgFe2O4 was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction （XRD） and electron diffraction. The structural evolution of MgFe2O4 nanocrystals was followed by powder X-ray diffraction and IR absorption spectroscopy. The formation of spinel structure of MgFe2O4 started at 800 ℃, and completed at 900 ℃, The transmission electron microscopy （TEM） measurements suggest that the particle sizes increase with the increasing annealing temperature, and the mean particle sizes of the spherical samples annealed at 800 ℃, 900 ℃ and 1 050 ℃ are ca. 3 nm, 8 nm and 11 nm, respectively. Magnetization measurements at room temperature and 78 K indicate supemaramagnetic nature of these MgFe2O4 nanocrvstals.

Applications of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques in environmental science

Synchrotron-based X-ray techniques have been widely applied to the fields of environmental science due to their element-specific and nondestructive properties and unique spectral and spatial resolution *** techniques are capable of in situ investigating chemical speciation,microstructure and mapping of elements in question at the molecular or nanometer scale,and thus provide direct evidence for reaction mechanisms for various environmental *** this contribution,the applications of three types of the techniques commonly used in the fields of environmental research are reviewed,namely X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS),X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM).In particular,the recent advances of the techniques in China are elaborated,and a selection of the applied examples are provided in the field of environmental ***,the perspectives of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques are *** their great progress and wide application,the techniques have revolutionized our understanding of significant geo-and bio-chemical *** is anticipatable that synchrotron-based X-ray techniques will continue to play a significant role in the fields and significant advances will be obtained in decades ahead.

An integrated view of the correlations between genomic and phenomic variables

Genome sequencing opened the flood gate of ＂-omics＂ studies, among which the research about correlations between genomic and phenomic variables is an important part. With the development of functional genomics and systems biology, genome-wide investigation of the correlations between many genomic and phenomic variables became possible. In this review, five genomic variables, such as evolution rate （or ＂age＂ of the gene）, the length of intron and ORF （protein length） in one gene, the biases of amino acid composition and codon usage, along with the phenomic variables related to expression patterns （level and breadth） are focused on. In most cases, genes with higher mRNA/protein expression level tend to evolve slowly, have less intronic DNA, code for smaller proteins, and have higher biases of amino acid composition and codon usage. In addition, broadly expressed proteins evolve more slowly and are shorter than tissue-specific proteins. Studies in this field are helpful for deeper understanding the signatures of selection mediated by the features of gene expression and are of great significance to enrich the evolution theory.

An Explicit Function Expression for dc Bias and Temperature Dependence of Magnetoresistances in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

An explicit function expression for the bias voltage or/and temperature dependences of tunnel magnetoresistance ratio and resistances were obtained with a unique set of intrinsic parameters. Two of these intrinsic parameters are the Curie temperature TC and the density of state (DOS) for itinerant majority and minority electrons ξ(ρM/ρm), which are the eigen parameters of ferromagnetic electrodes. Others are the spin-dependent matrix-element ratio (i.e., |Td|2/|TJ|2 ) and the anisotropic-wavelength-cutoff energy ECγ of spin-wave spectrum in magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), which are the structure parameters of an MTJ. These intrinsic parameters can be predetermined using the experimental measurement or, in principle, using the first-principle calculation method for an MTJ with the three key layers of FM/I/FM. Furthermore, a series of experimental data for an MTJ, for example, a spin-valve-type MTJ of Ta (5 nm)/Ni79Fe21(25 nm)/lr22Mn78(12 nm)/Co75Fe25(4 nm)/AI(0.8 nm)-oxide/Co75Fe25(4 nm)/Ni79Fe21(20 nm)/Ta (5 nm) in this work, can be self-consistently evaluated and explained using such concise explicit function formulations.
