Experiments were performed on cats under the treatments of chloraloseand flexedil. The cortical evoked potentials (C-CEP) recorded in primarysomatosensory cortex(SI), which were elicited by C-fiber inputs of sapheneousnerve, were used as an index of slow pain. The effect of electro-acupuncture(EA) of "Zusanli" point on C-CEP and role of cerebral anterior laterialassociation area(ALA) in this effect were observed.

Physical processes associated with onset of the 1998 Asian summer monsoon were examined in detail using multi-source datasets. We demonstrated that strong ocean-atmosphere-land interaction in the northern Indian Ocean and tropical Asian area during spring is a fundamental factor that induces the genesis and development of a monsoon onset vortex over the Bay of Bengal (BOB), with the vortex in turn triggering onset of the Asian summer monsoon. In spring, strong surface sensible heating over India and the Indochina Peninsula is transferred to the atmosphere, forming prominent in situ cyclonic circulation, with anticyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea and northern BOB where the ocean receives abundant solar radiation. The corresponding surface winds along the North Indian Ocean coastal areas cause the ocean to produce the in situ offshore currents and upwelling, resulting in sea surface temperature (SST) cooling. With precipitation on the Indochina Peninsula increasing from late April to early May, the offshore current disappears in the eastern BOB or develops into an onshore current, leading to SST increasing. A southwest-northeast oriented spring BOB warm pool with SST >31°C forms in a band from the southeastern Arabian Sea to the eastern BOB. In early May, the Somali cross-equatorial flow forms due to the meridional SST gradient between the two hemispheres, and surface sensible heat over the African land surface. The Somali flow overlaps in phase with the anticyclone over the northern Arabian Sea in the course of its inertial fluctuation along the equator. The convergent cold northerlies on the eastern side of the anticyclone cause the westerly in the inertial trough to increase rapidly, so that enhanced sensible heat is released from the sea surface into the atmosphere. Objective:To explore the effects of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) on migration,proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs).Methods:MSCs were obtained from Sprague-Dawley rats by a combination of gradient centrifugation and cell culture techniques and treated with IGF-1 at concentrations of 5-20 ng/*** of MSCs was determined as the mean doubling *** of CXC chemokine receptor 4(CXCR4) and migration property were determined by flow cytometry and transwell migration essay,*** expression of GATA-4 and collagen II was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).Results:The mean doubling time of MSC proliferation was decreased,and the expression of CXCR4 on MSCs and migration of MSCs were increased by IGF-1,all in a dose-dependent manner,while the optimal concentration of IGF-1 on proliferation and migration was ***-1 did not affect the expression of GATA-4 or collagen II ***:IGF-1 dose-dependently stimulated the proliferation of MSCs,upregulated the expression of CXCR4,and accelerated *** was no apparent differentiation of MSCs to cardiomyocytes or chondrocytes after culturing with IGF-1 alone.

Although many studies have investigated intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC),sample sizes in the reported studies are usually small and different in outcomes in different T and N subgroups are seldom ***,we evaluated the outcomes of NPC patients treated with IMRT and further explored treatment strategy to improve such *** collected clinical data of 865 NPC patients treated with IMRT alone or in combination with chemotherapy,and classified all cases into the following prognostic categories according to different TNM stages:early stage group (T1-2N0-1M0),advanced local disease group (T3-4N0-1M0),advanced nodal disease group (T1-2N2-3M0),and advanced locoregional disease group (T3-4N2-3M0).The 5-year overall survival (OS),local relapse-free survival (LRFS),and distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) were 83.0%,90.4%,and 84.0%,*** early disease group had the lowest treatment failure rate,with a 5-year OS of 95.6%.The advanced local disease group and advanced nodal disease group had similar failure pattern and treatment outcomes as well as similar hazard ratios for death (4.230 and 4.625,respectively).The advanced locoregional disease group had the highest incidence of relapse and death,with a 5-year DMFS and OS of 62.3% and 62.2%,respectively,and a hazard ratio for death of *** with IMRT alone,IMRT in combination with chemotherapy provided no significant benefit to locoregionally advanced *** results suggest that the decision of treatment strategy for NPC patients should consider combinations of T and N stages,and that IMRT alone for early stage NPC patients can produce satisfactory ***,for advanced local,nodal,and locoregional disease groups,a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is recommended.

Purpose: To observe the clinical effect of alomide and sodium cromoglycate eyedrops in the treatment of atopic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis and giant papillary ***: Randomized control study was used. Alomide and sodium cromoglycate eyedrops used to treat two groups of patients for two weeks. The effects of the two groups were ***: With respect of comprehensive therapeutic effect, the effectiveness rate was 83. 6% in alomide group, and 63. 3% in sodium cromoglycate group, which was not significantly different statistically. With respect of itching alleviation, alomide is more effective than sodium cromoglycate. No adverse effects were found in both groups. Conclusion: Our study suggests that alomide is a safe and effective drug in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Eye Science 2000; 16: 214-216.

Objective:To summarize experiences in 136 cases of retroperitoneal laparoscopic ***: From April 1997 to May 2002, retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery were performed for 136 cases of adrenal diseases. There were 63 aldosterone-producing adenoma, 22 adrenalcortical adenoma, 39 nonfunctional adrenal tumor, 7 adrenal cyst and 5 ***:Except for one case converts to open surgery, success has been achieved in all cases without major complications. Intraoperative blood loss was 76±32ml without blood transfusion. Postoperative hospital stay was 6±3 days. There were statistical differences among these indices when comparing to those of open surgery for 126 cases with adrenal diseases( P <0.05).But operative time was little longer in laparoscopic group than in group of open surgery( P <0.05),whereas it has been changed to similar in those recent ***:Retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery was less traumatic to the patients, with less postoperative discomfort and quicker recovery and should be considered the first choice of therapy for adrenal disorders.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the best cholinergic neuronal differentiation method of rhesus monkey bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).Four methods were used to induce differentiation,and the groups were assigned accordingly:basal inducing group(culture media,bFGF,and forskolin);SHH inducing group(SHH,inducing group);RA inducing group(RA,basal inducing group);and SHH+RA inducing group(SHH,RA,and basal inducing group).All groups displayed neuronal morphology and increased expression of nestin and neuron-specific *** basal inducing group did not express synapsin,and cells from the SHH inducing group did not exhibit neuronal resting membrane *** contrast,results demonstrated that BMSCs from the RA and SHH+RA inducing groups exhibited neuronal resting membrane potential,and cells from the SHH+RA inducing group expressed higher levels of synapsin and *** conclusion,the induction of cholinergic differentiation through SHH+RA was determined to be superior to the other methods.

Long-Term Effects of a High-Protein Diet on Glucose Metabolism After Early Postnatal Malnutrition in Rats with Intrauterine Growth Retardation

Objective To investigate the long term effects of a high protein diet on glucose metabolism after early postnatal malnutrition in rats with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). Methods An IUGR rat model was established by passive smoking. One hundred and twenty nine IUGR pups were assigned randomly into 3 groups: IUGR control group, IUGR low protein group and IUGR high protein group. Forty two normal pups were used as controls. Both the IUGR control group and the non IUGR controls were fed with a 20% (normal) protein diet after birth. Both the low protein and high protein IUGR groups were fed with an 8% low protein diet for the first 4 weeks of life, and then the former were fed with a 20% protein diet, while the latter were fed with a 30% high protein diet. The glucose tolerance test and insulin release test were performed at the 4th, 6th and 48th weeks of life and the insulin sensitive index (ISI) was calculated in the four groups. Results Although the fasting blood glucose was normal in the low protein and high protein groups at the 4th week, the fasting plasma insulin, and blood glucose and insulin concentrations after glucose loading increased and ISI decreased compared with the controls (P3.36 ) μU/ml, respectively] and the low protein group [( 5.24 ± 1.35 ) mmol/L and ( 31.22 ± 3.36 ) μU/ml, respectively] were significantly higher than those of the controls [( 4.46 ± 1.11 mmol/L and ( 15.82 ± 1.63 μU/ml, respectively].
