A von-Neumann-like photonic processor and its application in studying quantum signature of chaos

Photonic quantum computation plays an important role and offers unique advantages.Two decades after the milestone work of Knill-Laflamme-Milburn,various architectures of photonic processors have been proposed,and quantum advantage over classical computers has also been demonstrated.It is now the opportune time to apply this technology to real-world applications.However,at current technology level,this aim is restricted by either programmability in bulk optics or loss in integrated optics for the existing architectures of processors,for which the resource cost is also a problem.Here we present a von-Neumann-like architecture based on temporal-mode encoding and looped structure on table,which is capable of multimode-universal programmability,resource-efficiency,phasestability and software-scalability.In order to illustrate these merits,we execute two different programs with varying resource requirements on the same processor,to investigate quantum signature of chaos from two aspects:the signature behaviors exhibited in phase space(13 modes),and the Fermi golden rule which has not been experimentally studied in quantitative way before(26 modes).The maximal program contains an optical interferometer network with 1694 freely-adjustable phases.Considering current state-of-the-art,our architecture stands as the most promising candidate for real-world applications.

Stark Tuning of Telecom Single-Photon Emitters Based on a Single Er3+

The implementation of scalable quantum networks requires photons at the telecom band and long-lived spin coherence. The single Er3+in solid-state hosts is an important candidate that fulfills these critical requirements simultaneously. However, to entangle distant Er3+ions through photonic connections, the emission frequency of individual Er3+in solid-state matrix must be the same, which is challenging because the emission frequency of Er3+depends on its local environment. Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the Stark tuning of the emission frequency of a single Er3+in a Y2SiO5crystal by employing electrodes interfaced with a silicon photonic crystal cavity. We obtain a Stark shift of 182.9±0.8 MHz, which is approximately 27 times of the optical emission linewidth, demonstrating promising applications in tuning the emission frequency of independent Er3+into the same spectral channels. Our results provide a useful solution for construction of scalable quantum networks based on single Er3+and a universal tool for tuning emission of individual rare-earth ions.

A memory-based quantum repeater architecture provides a solution to distribute quantum information to an arbitrary long distance.Practical quantum repeaters are likely to be built in optical-fiber networks which take advantage of the low-loss transmission between quantum memory nodes.Most quantum memory platforms have characteristic atomic transitions away from the telecommunication band.A nondegenerate photon pair source is therefore useful for connection of a quantum memory to optical fibers.Here,we report a high-brightness narrowband photon-pair source which is compatible with a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal Pr^3+:Y2SiO5.The photon-pair source is generated through a cavityenhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion process with the signal photon at 606 nm and the idler photon at 1540 nm.Moreover,using the telecom C-band idler photons for heralding,we demonstrate the reversible transfer of orbital-angular-momentum qubit between the signal photon and the quantum memory based on Pr3^+:Y2SiO5.

In optical metrological protocols to measure physical quantities,it is,in principle,always beneficial to in crease photon number n to improve measurement precision.However,practical constraints prevent the arbitrary increase of n due to the imperfections of a practical detector,especially when the detector response is dominated by the saturation effect.In this work,we show that a modified weak measurement protocol,namely,biased weak measurement significantly improves the precision of optical metrology in the presence of saturation effect.This method detects an ultra-small fraction of photons while main tains a considerable amount of metrological information.The biased pre-coupling leads to an additi onal reduction of photons in the post-selection and gene rates an extinction point in the spectrum distribution,which is extremely sensitive to the estimated parameter and difficult to be saturated.Therefore,the Fisher information can be persistently enhanced by increasing the photon number.In our magnetic-sensing experiment,biased weak measurement achieves precision approximately one order of magnitude better than those of previously used methods.The proposed method can be applied in various optical measurement schemes to remarkably mitigate the detector saturation effect with low-cost apparatuses.

BACKGROUND Regorafenib(R)and fruquintinib(F)are the standard third-line regimens for colorectal cancer(CRC)according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines,but both have limited efficacy.Several phase 2 trials have indicated that R or F combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors can reverse immunosuppression and achieve promising efficacy for microsatellite stable or proficient mismatch repair(MSS/pMMR)CRC.Due to the lack of studies comparing the efficacy between F,R,F plus programmed death-1(PD-1)inhibitor,and R plus PD-1 inhibitors(RP),it is still unclear whether the combination therapy is more effective than monotherapy.AIM To provide critical evidence for selecting the appropriate drugs for MSS/pMMR metastatic CRC(mCRC)patients in clinical practice.METHODS A total of 2639 CRC patients were enrolled from January 2018 to September 2022 in our hospital,and 313 MSS/pMMR mCRC patients were finally included.RESULTS A total of 313 eligible patients were divided into F(n=70),R(n=67),F plus PD-1 inhibitor(FP)(n=95)and RP(n=81)groups.The key clinical characteristics were well balanced among the groups.The median progression-free survival(PFS)of the F,R,FP,and RP groups was 3.5 months,3.6 months,4.9 months,and 3.0 months,respectively.The median overall survival(OS)was 14.6 months,15.7 months,16.7 months,and 14.1 months.The FP regimen had an improved disease control rate(DCR)(P=0.044)and 6-month PFS(P=0.014)and exhibited a better trend in PFS(P=0.057)compared with F,and it was also significantly better in PFS than RP(P=0.030).RP did not confer a significant survival benefit;instead,the R group had a trend toward greater benefit with OS(P=0.080)compared with RP.No significant differences were observed between the R and F groups in PFS or OS(P>0.05).CONCLUSION FP is superior to F in achieving 6-month PFS and DCR,while RP is not better than R.FP has an improved PFS and 6-month PFS compared with RP,but F and R had similar clinical efficacy.Therefore,FP may be a highly promising strategy in the treatment of M

Strong shock propagation for the finite-source circular blast in a confined domain

The circular explosion wave produced by the abrupt discharge of gas from a high-temperature heat source serves as a crucial model for addressing explosion phenomena in compressible flow.The reflection of the primary shock and its propagation within a confined domain are studied both theoretically and numerically in this research.Under the assumption of strong shock,the scaling law governing propagation of the main shock is proposed.The dimensionless frequency of reflected shock propagation is associated with the confined distance.The numerical simulation for the circular explosion problem in a confined domain is performed for validation.Under the influence of confinement,the principal shock wave systematically undergoes reflection within the domain until it weakens,leading to the non-monotonic attenuation of kinetic energy in the explosion fireball and periodic oscillations of the fireball volume with a certain frequency.The simulation results indicate that the frequency of kinetic energy attenuation and the volume oscillation of the explosive fireball align consistently with the scaling law.

Renewable energy is becoming more attractive as traditional fossil fuels are rapidly depleted and expensive,and their use would release pollutants.Power systems that use both wind and solar energy are more reliable and efficient than those that utilize only one energy.Hybrid renewable energy systems(HRES)are viable for remote areas operating in standalone mode.This paper aims to present the state-of-the-art research on off-grid solar-wind hybrid energy systems over the last two decades.More than 1500 published articles extracted from the Web of Science are analyzed by bibliometric methods and processed by CiteSpace to present the results with figures and tables.Productive countries and highly cited authors are identified,and hot topics with hotspot articles are shown in landscape and timeline views.Emerging trends and new developments related to techno-economic analysis and microgrids,as well as the application of HOMER software,are predicted based on the analysis of citation bursts.Furthermore,the opportunities of hybrid energy systems for sustainable development are discussed,and challenges and possible solutions are proposed.The study of this paper provides researchers with a comprehensive understanding and intuitive representation of standalone solar-wind hybrid energy systems.

Peer-to-Peer Trading in Distribution Systems with the Utility's Operation

To realize a liberalized peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity market in distribution systems with network security, this paper develops a general framework for P2P trading in distribution systems with the utility's operation. The model is formulated as a bi-level programming. The utility's operation is an upper level problem, where a calculation method of network usage charges for P2P trading is also proposed. Peers' P2P trading is a lower level problem. An iterative algorithm based on analytical target cascading (ATC) is proposed to solve the model, where the interactions between utility and peers are presented. Numerical results on the IEEE 33-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method realizes a liberalized P2P market and ensures network security in distribution systems.
