Clinical and laboratory features of COVID-19 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7 versus those infected with other SARS-CoV-2 strains:A retrospective observational study

Objective:To investigate the clinical symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients with and without B.1.1.7 ***:This retrospective observational study included COVID-19 patients who were divided into two groups,the mutation and the non-mutation *** characteristics,clinical characteristics,laboratory parameters,and mortality rates were recorded and compared between the two ***:A total of 196 patients were included in the *** relationship between the mutant virus status and sex,age,comorbidity,survival status,and disease severity was not significant(P>0.05).No significant differences were found in duration of hospitalization between the mutation and the non-mutation group(P>0.05).However,there was a statistically significant difference between patients with and without mutant viruses in hemoglobin,mean platelet volume,procalcitonin,low density lipoprotein,iron-binding capacity,potassium,calcium,C-reactive protein,folate,creatine kinase myocardial band,D-dimer,and international normalized ratio(P<0.05).Conclusions:No significant difference is found in mortality rate,disease severity or duration of hospitalization between the patients with and without variant *** monitoring of COVID-19 patients is required for all variants.

目的:探讨血清唾液酸和糖尿病性视网膜病变几个阶段之间潜在的关联。方法:1型糖尿病视网膜不同程度病变组40例。对照组30例,对其血清唾液酸水平进行研究。结果:结果显示,研究组与对照组相比有较高的血清唾液酸浓度(95.95±9.5 vs 45.05±19.91mmoL/L,P=0.0001)。我们也观察到糖尿病性视网膜病变的水平逐步上升,其浓度升高(P<0.05),但相关性较弱。血清唾液酸浓度与血糖浓度呈正相关(r=0.67,P=0.0001)。结论:血清唾液酸浓度的增加与视网膜病变阶段有关。这对确定1型糖尿病患者视网膜病变的程度有帮助。但是,仍然需要更详细的研究,以得到更精确的结论。

To the editor： Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy （UGE） is a safe procedure and it is widely used without any complication in general. Complications axe due to endoscopic procedure, invasive applications, local anesthetic medication or the sedative drugs like midazolam. Complications of the procedure are hemorrhage, perf^ration of the stomach or gut. respiratory arrest, reaction to the sedative drugs used like midazolam or pethidine, aspiration pneumonia, damaging of crowned teeth or dental bridgework, infection, cardiac arrest and finally under very unusual circumstances death. Mild complications are sore throat, numb throat, bloated feeling and feeling sleepy.

Objective:To define histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of the lungs,heart,liver,and kidneys in patients who died from coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),and to determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in all tissues,as well as the presence of fungi and parasites in lung ***:This retrospective case study was conducted in the intensive care units of Dokuz Eylül University Hospital,and patients(≥18 years)who died due to COVID-19 between October 2020 and April 2021 were *** biopsy samples of the patient’s lung,heart,liver,and kidney tissues were ***:In the study,we enrolled 12 patients(mean age:70 years;50%male).Alveolar epithelial cell damage and diffuse alveolar damage were predominant in lung *** lymphocyte infiltration,centrilobular sinusoidal dilatation,and microvesicular steatosis in the liver,together with pigmented cast,non-isometric vacuolar degeneration,and capillary plugging in the kidneys,were commonly found among the ***-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein antibodies were detected in three lung and two kidney tissues,and so did angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor positivity in one lung and more than half of the kidney *** RT-PCR tests were positive in three lungs and one kidney *** DNA isolation from lung tissues,Pneumocystis jirovecii was detected in nine patients,Aspergillus fumigatus in two,Microsporidia in three,and Cryptosporidium in ***:SARS-CoV-2 is a multisystemic *** and parasites should be investigated in critically ill COVID-19 patients prescribed corticosteroids.

Background： Postmastectomy pain syndrome （PM PS） is defined as a chronic （continuing for 3 or more months） neuropathic pain affecting the axilla, medial arm, breast, and chest wall after breast cancer surgery. The prevalence of PMPS has been reported to range from 20% to 68%. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of PMPS among mastectomy patients, the severity of neuropathic pain in these patients, risk factors that contribute to pain becoming chronic, and the effect of PMPS on life quality. Methods： This cross-sectional study was approved by the Sakarya University, Medical Faculty Ethical Council and included 146 patients ranging in age from 18 to 85 years who visited the pain clinic, general surgery clinic, and oncology clinic and had breast surgery between 2012 and 2014. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they met PMPS criteria： pain at axilla, arm, shoulder, chest wall, scar tissue, or breast at least 3 months after breast surgery. All patients gave informed consent prior to entry into the study. Patient medical records were collected, and pain and quality of life were evaluated by the visual analog scale （VAS） for pain, a short form of the McGill Pain Questiomlaire （SF-MPQ）, douleur neuropathique-4 （DN-4）, and SF-36. Results： Patient mean age was 55.2 ± 11.8 years （33.0-83.0 years）. PMPS prevalence was 36%. Mean scores on the VAS, SF-MPQ, and DN-4 in PMPS patients were 1.76 ±2.38 （0-10）, 1.73 ± 1.54 （0-5）, and 1.64 ± 2.31 （0-8）, respectively. Of these patients, 31 （23.7%） had neuropathic pain characteristics, and 12 （9.2%） had phantom pain according to the DN-4 survey. Patients who had modified radical mastectomy were significantly more likely to develop PMPS than patients who had breast-protective surgery （P = 0.028）. Only 2 （2.4%） of PMPS patients had received proper treatment （anticonvulsants or opioids）. BACKGROUND:This study aimed to determine the necessity of pregnancy test in women of reproductive age admitted to emergency department(ED) in routine ***:We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who presented to the ED between January 1,2006 and December 31,2010 and received a pregnancy ***:The median age of 1 586 patients enrolled into the study was 27 *** these patients,19.55%had a positive result of pregnancy *** most common complaint at admission was abdominal pain in 60.15%of the patients,and pregnancy test was prescribed.15.83%of the patients with abdominal pain had a positive result of pregnancy *** the patients,30.64%had nausea-vomiting at admission,and 11.52%had a positive result of pregnancy *** other complaints were considered,the most commonly observed complaints were non-specific symptoms such as dizziness,malaise and respiratory *** the patients,70.93%were not remembering the date of last menstruation,and 9.51%showed a positive result of pregnancy *** tract infection(UTI) was commonly diagnosed with an incidence of 17.65%,which was followed by nonspecific abdominal pain(NSAP)(16.77%) and gastrointestinal disorders such as gastritis and peptic ulcer(6.87%).Of the patients,88.40%were discharged from ED,and 11.60%were ***:Pregnancy test should be given to women of reproductive age as a routine practice in ED in developing countries like Turkey.
