Solute-solute interactions and their impacts on solute co-segregation and interfacial cohesion of{1012}twin boundary in zinc

Interactions of solute atoms in biodegradable zinc alloys and their effect on alloy mechanical properties have been less investigated.In this work,the interactions between the common solutes(Li,Mg,Mn,Cu,and Ag)used in the biodegradable Zn alloys,including a solute-solute pair with the same element or with two different elements,are investigated based on first-principles calculations.It is found that the energetically favorable configuration is the third nearest-neighboring for most solute-solute pairs in the bulk lattice because of the relatively strong electronic interaction between solute and Zn atoms or the relatively small local elastic deformation associated with the configuration.Considering that interfacial cleavage is a key fracture mode of zinc,the segregation ability of these solutes and their effect on the{1012}twin boundary cohesion are also examined.The result shows that Li tends to fully occupy its preferred site in the twin boundary,while Mg,Mn,Cu,or Ag has a concentration limitation in the twin boundary.The twin boundary cohesion can be significantly enhanced by the segregation of Mn,followed by Cu and Ag,because of the contribution of their d states close to the Fermi level.Furthermore,the co-segregation ability of two solute atoms in the twin boundary increases with increasing the binding tendency of these two solute atoms in the boundary.Mn and Li or Mg show a relatively strong co-segregation ability in the twin boundary.Adding Mn to Zn-Li or Zn-Mg alloys can significantly enhance the resistance to fracture of twin boundaries.

A calibration method of external parameters of 2D laser in rotary 3D scanning

Aiming at the problem of external parameter calibration in the combined rotating three-dimensional(3D) scanning process of laser radar and turntable, a fast 3D data scanning and accurate equipment calibration method suitable for industrial application scenarios is proposed. The coordinates of the center of the circle in the laser radar coordinate system are obtained by fitting the coordinates of the center of the circle with the scanning arc. Through the standard size and rotation angle of the target ball, the coordinates of the ball center in the turntable coordinate system are obtained. The rotation parameter R and the translation parameter T of the minimum value of the data set conversion error function in the two coordinate systems are calculated. The experimental results show that the error between the converted data and the actual data is within 0.1 mm, which meets the actual work requirements. This calibration method has the advantages of high accuracy and strong robustness.

Chiral nanoparticle-induced amplification in optical activity of molecules with chiral centers

Sensitive differentiation of an enantiomer from its mirror image(ie,enantiodifferentiation),a perennial challenge for pharmaceutical production and disease diagnosis,is technically limited by the weak optical activity(OA)of enantiomers,mainly due to their dimensional mismatch with light wavelengths in the ultraviolet(UV)-visible region.Here we use silver chiral nanoparticles(Ag CNPs)with nominally sub-5 nm helical pitch(P)to amplify the OA of(20R,30R,40S)-riboflavin-50-phosphate sodium salts(RP),which have been found to indirectly affect metabolic processes,through the formation of an RP thin film(TF)covering a close-packed array of Ag CNPs.The OA of the RP in the deep-UV region can be amplified up to 80-fold,ascribed to the aggregation of RP in the TFs and the interactions between RP and the atomically chiral lattices at the CNPs'surfaces.The former contribution,not associated with the chiral Ag topographies,plays a dominant role by thickening the RP TFs,so that the observed amplification has no enantioselective dependence on the chirality of the Ag CNPs.This study extends progress in the sensitive detection of bio-enantiomers,which is highly desired for advanced bio-detection in disease diagnosis and production of single-enantiomer pharmaceuticals.

High cut-off membranes in patients requiring renal replacement therapy:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background:Whether high cut-off(HCO)membranes are more effective than high-flux(HF)membranes in patients requiring renal replacement therapy(RRT)remains controversial.The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the efficacy of HCO membranes regarding the clearance of inflammation-related mediators,β2-microglobulin and urea;albumin loss;and all-cause mortality in patients requiring RRT.Methods:We searched all relevant studies on PubMed,Embase,Web of Science,the Cochrane Library,and China National Knowledge Infrastructure,with no language or publication year restrictions.Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data using a prespecified extraction instrument.Only randomized controlled trials(RCTs)were included.Summary estimates of standardized mean differences(SMDs)or weighted mean differences(WMDs)and risk ratios(RRs)were obtained by fixed-effects or random-effects models.Sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses were performed to determine the source of heterogeneity.Results:Nineteen RCTs involving 710 participants were included in this systematic review.Compared with HF membranes,HCO membranes were more effective in reducing the plasma level of interleukin-6(IL-6)(SMD-0.25,95%confidence interval(CI)-0.48 to-0.01,P=0.04,I 2=63.8%);however,no difference was observed in the clearance of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)(SMD 0.03,95%CI-0.27 to 0.33,P=0.84,I 2=4.3%),IL-10(SMD 0.22,95%CI-0.12 to 0.55,P=0.21,I 2=0.0%),or urea(WMD-0.27,95%CI-2.77 to 2.23,P=0.83,I 2=19.6%).In addition,a more significant reduction ratio ofβ2-microglobulin(WMD 14.8,95%CI 3.78 to 25.82,P=0.01,I 2=88.3%)and a more obvious loss of albumin(WMD-0.25,95%CI-0.35 to-0.16,P<0.01,I 2=40.8%)could be observed with the treatment of HCO membranes.For all-cause mortality,there was no difference between the two groups(risk ratio[RR]1.10,95%CI 0.87 to 1.40,P=0.43,I 2=0.0%).Conclusions:Compared with HF membranes,HCO membranes might have additional benefits on the clearance of IL-6 andβ2-microglobulin but not on TNF-α,IL-10,and urea.

Architectural Design and Additive Manufacturing of Mechanical Metamaterials:A Review

Mechanical metamaterials can be defined as a class of architected materials that exhibit unprecedented mechanical properties derived from designed artificial architectures rather than their constituent materials.While macroscale and simple layouts can be realized by conventional top-down manufacturing approaches,many of the sophisticated designs at various length scales remain elusive,due to the lack of adequate manufacturing methods.Recent progress in additive manufacturing(AM)has led to the realization of a myriad of novel metamaterial concepts.AM methods capable of fabricating microscale architectures with high resolution,arbitrary complexity,and high feature fidelity have enabled the rapid development of architected meta materials and drastically reduced the design-computation and experimental-validation cycle.This paper first provides a detailed review of various topologies based on the desired mechanical properties,including stiff,strong,and auxetic(negative Poisson’s ratio)metamaterials,followed by a discussion of the AM technologies capable of fabricating these metamaterials.Finally,we discuss current challenges and recommend future directions for AM and mechanical metamaterials.

Pairing nitroxyl radical and phenazine with electron-withdrawing/-donating substituents in “water-in-ionic liquid” for high-voltage aqueous redox flow batteries

Aqueous redox-active organic materials-base electrolytes are sustainable alternatives to vanadium-based electrolyte for redoxﬂow batteries(RFBs)due to the advantages of high ionic conductivity,environmentally benign,safety and low cost.However,the underexplored redox properties of organic materials and the narrow thermodynamic electrolysis window of water(1.23 V)hinder their wide applications.Therefore,seeking suitable organic redox couples and aqueous electrolytes with a high output voltage is highly suggested for advancing the aqueous organic RFBs.In this work,the functionalized phenazine and nitroxyl radical with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing group exhibit redox potential of-0.88 V and 0.78 V vs.Ag,respectively,in“water-in-ionic liquid”supporting electrolytes.Raman spectra reveal that the activity of water is largely suppressed in“water-in-ionic liquid”due to the enhanced hydrogen bond interactions between ionic liquid and water,enabling an electrochemical stability window above 3 V.“Water-in-ionic liquid”supporting electrolytes help to shift redox potential of nitroxyl radical and enable the redox activity of functionalized phenazine.The assembled aqueous RFB allows a theoretical cell voltage of 1.66 V and shows a practical discharge voltage of 1.5 V in the“water-in-ionic liquid”electrolytes.Meanwhile,capacity retention of 99.91%per cycle is achieved over 500 charge/discharge cycles.A power density of 112 mW cm^(-2) is obtained at a current density of 30 mA cm^(-2).This work highlights the importance of rationally combining supporting electrolytes and organic molecules to achieve high-voltage aqueous RFBs.

Surface passivation is a common method to improve the resistance of thermal degradation of nitride phosphors.However,such a surface passivation generally needs extra processes and decreases the photoluminescence property of the phosphors.In this work,both the thermal stability and photoluminescence property of a red phosphor Sr_(2)Si_(5)N_(8):Eu are improved through the addition of BN.The influence of B on the crystal structure and the valence state of active ions was analyzed by experimental characterization.First-principles calculations were applied to analyze the formation energy of N vacancies,which influence the resistance of thermal degradation.Finally,combining with experimental characterization and calculations,the enhancing mechanism of thermal stability and photoluminescence by B was studied.

Theoretical analysis of the convergence property of a basic pigeon-inspired optimizer in a continuous search space

The pigeon-inspired optimization(PIO) algorithm is a newly presented swarm intelligence optimization algorithm inspired by the homing behavior of pigeons. Although PIO has demonstrated effectiveness and superiority in numerous fields, particularly in practical engineering optimization, there have been few results concerning the theoretical foundations of PIO. This paper conducts convergence analysis of basic PIO in a continuous search space in two aspects. First, we analyze the convergence of each pigeon’s expected position using a difference equation and prove that the average position of each pigeon in the swarm will converge to the same value. To further study the stochastic global convergence property of the pigeon swarm, we apply the martingale theory to investigate the basic PIO swarm sequence, and achieve a sufficient condition to guarantee global convergence of the basic PIO. Our theoretical analysis shows that this convergence depends upon the accumulation of the minimum probability with which the pigeon swarm jumps to the global-optimal region at each iteration. The mathematical methods proposed in this study, particularly the martingale technique, also provide a new effective approach for the theoretical analysis of bio-inspired algorithms in continuous optimization.

A Facile Method to Prepare Three-Dimensional Fe2O3/Graphene Composites as the Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Metal oxides comprise an important class of electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this paper, we report the preparation of three-dimensional （3D） Fe2O3/chemically converted graphene composites and their application in supercapacitors. The composites are synthesized via a one-step reaction between graphene oxide and Fe^2＋ at a mild condition. During the reaction graphene oxide sheets are reduced and self-assemble into a 3D network, while Fe^2＋ is converted into Fe203 and deposited onto the graphene network. This structure facilitates the diffusion of the electrolyte and the electron transfer between Fe2O3 and the current collector, thus endows the composites with high capacitive performance. A high specific capacitance of 264 F·g^-1 （2.5 A·g^-1） at the working potential of 0--1 V vs. saturated calomel electrode is achieved on the Fe2O3/chemically converted graphene composites. Meanwhile, the composites show good cycling stability, with capacitance retention of 95.7% after 5000 cycles. This work provides a facile method to fabricate cathode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors.

Search-Based Software Test Data Generation for Path Coverage Based on a Feedback-Directed Mechanism

Automatically generating test cases by evolutionary algorithms to satisfy the path coverage criterion has attracted much research attention in software testing.In the context of generating test cases to cover many target paths,the efficiency of existing methods needs to be further improved when infeasible or difficult paths exist in the program under test.This is because a significant amount of the search budget(i.e.,time allocated for the search to run)is consumed when computing fitness evaluations of individuals on infeasible or difficult paths.In this work,we present a feedback-directed mechanism that temporarily removes groups of paths from the target paths when no improvement is observed for these paths in subsequent generations.To fulfill this task,our strategy first organizes paths into groups.Then,in each generation,the objective scores of each individual for all paths in each group are summed up.For each group,the lowest value of the summed up objective scores among all individuals is assigned as the best aggregated score for a group.A group is removed when no improvement is observed in its best aggregated score over the last two generations.The experimental results show that the proposed approach can significantly improve path coverage rates for programs under test with infeasible or difficult paths in case of a limited search budget.In particular,the feedback-directed mechanism reduces wasting the search budget on infeasible paths or on difficult target paths that require many fitness evaluations before getting an improvement.
