Impact of Soil Fumigation Practices on Soil Nematodes and Microbial Biomass

This study was designed to understand the impact of methyl bromide (MB) (CH3Br) and its alternatives on both free-living and root-knot nematodes in the soil. A randomized complete block experiment with six treatments and 4 replicates (each replicate in a separate greenhouse) was established in Qingzhou, Shandong Province, China. In addition to MB and untreated control (CK) treatments there were four alternative soil fumigation practices including MB+virtually impermeable films (VIF), metam sodium (MS), MS +VIF and soil solarization combined with selected biological control agents (SS+BCA). Two tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) cultivars, cv. Maofen-802 from the Xian Institute of Vegetable Science, China, and cv. AF179 Brillante from the Israeli Hazera Quality Seeds, were selected as test crops. The results indicated that Rhabditidae was the most dominant population with percentage abundance as high as 85% of the total number of identified free-living nematodes, followed by that of Cephalobidae. Methyl bromide and its alternatives except for the non-chemical SS+BCA treatment controlled the target pest, root-knot nematodes. Also, the impact of the three chemical alternatives on free-living nematode number and functional group abundance was similar to the impact associated with a typical methyl bromide application. Chemical fumigation practices, especially that with MB, significantly reduced the number of nematodes in the soil and simultaneously significantly reduced the number of nematode genera thereby reducing nematode diversity. All the four soil chemical fumigation activities decreased soil microbial biomass and had an obvious initial impact on microorganism biomass. Furthermore, both plant-parasitic and fungivore nematodes were positively correlated with soil microbial biomass.

lonic liquids with stimuli-responsive characteristics are an essential branch in the comprehensive ionic liquids'family,which can meet the controllable and reversible needs in practical applications with different stimulation *** this review,we summarize the recent research progress of these stimuli-responsive ionic liquids,mainly focusing on their chemical structures,properties,responsive mechanism,aggregation structures,and phase behaviors,which were driven by external stimuli,such as CO2,magnetism,light,temperature,redox,and ***,the particular or potential applications of stimuli-responsive ionic liquids are expounded in various fields of science,including catalytic reaction,extraction,separation,nano-material preparation,and gas *** the end,the challenges and strategies of the subject are briefly *** is expected that this review will contribute to the rational design and applications of stimu-liresponsive ionic liquids in the future.

Over the years,numerous geotechnical approaches have been implemented to mitigate the adverse effects of climate warming on various infrastructures in the permafrost region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP),such as the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and Railway,and achieved the expected engineering ***,little attention has been given to whether the performance of these geotechnical approaches has changed during the ongoing process of climate *** investigate the performance variation of one of these geotechnical approaches,which is two-phase closed thermosyphon(TPCT),during sustained climate warming,we conducted a statistical analysis of soil temperature monitoring data in 2003-2020 from eight regular embankments and six TPCT embankments in our permafrost monitoring *** results indicate that TPCT undeniably has a cooling effect on the permafrost beneath embankments,even rapidly eliminated previously formed taliks beneath ***,further analysis reveals that the performance of TPCT has been weakening during sustained climate warming,which has confirmed by the re-forming of the taliks beneath embankment where they had been previously *** on the current understanding,we attributed the weakening of thermosyphon performance to a significant reduction in the air temperature freezing index caused by ongoing climate *** this study,we aimed to draw attention to the evolving performance of geotechnical approaches in permafrost regions amid climate warming,prompting necessary engineering innovations to address this situation and ensure the sustainable development of the permafrost region on the QTP.

Considering the tremendous applications and purification requirement of acetylene(C_(2)H_(2)),seeking appropriate adsorbents with high capacity and selectivity is a vital task and remains an enduring ***,we designed and synthesized a robust three-dimensional(3D)indium-organic framework([(Me)_(2)NH_(2)][In(L6)_(0.5)(IPA)_(0.5)]·DMA·2H_(2)O(In-L6-IPA,DMA=dimethylammonium,IPA=isopropyl alcohol))featuring two types of one-dimensional(1D)tubular *** activated In-L6-IPA displayed high loading for C_(2)H_(2)(104.4 cm^(3)·g^(-1),the second highest value among all reported indium-based metal-organic frameworks(MOFs))and simultaneously selective adsorption for C_(2)H_(2) over CO_(2),C_(2)H_(6),and ethylene(C_(2)H_(4))at 298 K under 100 *** modelling revealed that the porous wall of In-L6-IPA provides more and stronger multiple interactions for C_(2)H_(2) than CO_(2),C_(2)H_(6),and C_(2)H_(4) containing C–H···π,C–H···O,and O···π*** experiments validated the actual separation ability for various ratios of binary C_(2)H_(2)/C_(2)H_(4) and C_(2)H_(2)/CO_(2) mixtures as well as equimolar ternary C_(2)H_(2)/C_(2)H_(4)/CO_(2) and C_(2)H_(2)/C_(2)H_(4)/C_(2)H_(6) mixtures with excellent reusability.

Phosphors emitting visible and near-infrared persistent luminescence have been explored extensively owing to their unusual properties and commercial interest in their applications such as glow-in-the-dark paints,optical information storage,and in vivo ***,no persistent phosphor that features emissions in the ultraviolet C range(200–280 nm)has been known to exist so ***,we demonstrate a strategy for creating a new generation of persistent phosphor that exhibits strong ultraviolet C emission with an initial power density over 10 milliwatts per square meter and an afterglow of more than 2 *** characterizations coupled with first-principles calculations have revealed that structural defects associated with oxygen introduction-induced anion vacancies in fluoride elpasolite can function as electron traps,which capture and store a large number of electrons triggered by Xray ***,we show that the ultraviolet C afterglow intensity of the yielded phosphor is sufficiently strong for *** discovery of this ultraviolet C afterglow opens up new avenues for research on persistent phosphors,and it offers new perspectives on their applications in terms of sterilization,disinfection,drug release,cancer treatment,anti-counterfeiting,and beyond.

Microbial secondary metabolites have long been considered as potential sources of lead compounds for medicinal use due to their rich chemical diversity and extensive biological ***,many biosynthetic gene clusters remain silent under traditional laboratory culture conditions,resulting in repeated isolation of a large number of known *** co-culture strategy simulates the complex ecological environment of microbial life by using an ecology-driven method to activate silent gene clusters of microorganisms and tap their metabolic potential to obtain novel bioactive secondary *** this review,representative studies from 2017 to 2020 on the discovery of novel bioactive natural products from co-cultured microorganisms are summarized.A series of natural products with diverse and novel structures have been discovered successfully by co-culture strategies,including fungus-fungus,fungus-bacterium,and bacterium-bacterium co-culture *** novel compounds exhibited various bioactivities including extensive antimicrobial activities and potential cytotoxic activities,especially when it came to disparate marine-derived species and cross-species of marine strains and terrestrial *** could be concluded that co-culture can be an effective strategy to tap the metabolic potential of microorganisms,particularly for marine-derived species,thus providing diverse molecules for the discovery of lead compounds and drug candidates.

We demonstrate that the etalon effects of alkali cells can be used as the output coupler of an alkali *** on a rubidium cell with highly parallelized windows,a 2.7 W rubidium laser with optical efficiency of 20.9%and slope efficiency of 31.8%is obtained by adopting unconventional output *** it has compact configuration and the inner surface of the rubidium cell is uncoated,this may be used in high power laser systems with long lifetimes.
