A multi-mechanism numerical simulation model for CO2-EOR and storage in fractured shale oil reservoirs

Under the policy background and advocacy of carbon capture, utilization, and storage（CCUS）, CO2-EOR has become a promising direction in the shale oil reservoir industry. The multi-scale pore structure distribution and fracture structure lead to complex multiphase flow, comprehensively considering multiple mechanisms is crucial for development and CO2storage in fractured shale reservoirs. In this paper, a multi-mechanism coupled model is developed by MATLAB. Compared to the traditional Eclipse300 and MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox（MRST）, this model considers the impact of pore structure on fluid phase behavior by the modified Peng—Robinson equation of state（PR-EOS）, and the effect simultaneously radiate to Maxwell—Stefan（M—S） diffusion, stress sensitivity, the nano-confinement（NC） effect. Moreover, a modified embedded discrete fracture model（EDFM） is used to model the complex fractures, which optimizes connection types and half-transmissibility calculation approaches between non-neighboring connections（NNCs）. The full implicit equation adopts the finite volume method（FVM）and Newton—Raphson iteration for discretization and solution. The model verification with the Eclipse300 and MRST is satisfactory. The results show that the interaction between the mechanisms significantly affects the production performance and storage characteristics. The effect of molecular diffusion may be overestimated in oil-dominated（liquid-dominated） shale reservoirs. The well spacing and injection gas rate are the most crucial factors affecting the production by sensitivity analysis. Moreover, the potential gas invasion risk is mentioned. This model provides a reliable theoretical basis for CO2-EOR and sequestration in shale oil reservoirs.

Increased Prevalence of Thyroid Nodules Across Nearly 10 Years in Shanghai,China

Objective This study aimed to determine whether the prevalence of thyroid nodules(TNs)increased due to modern lifestyles or other factors,despite the advances in screening and diagnostic tools.Methods This study included 3474 pairs of participants,who were matched by gender and age(±3 years)from two cross-sectional sampling surveys:(1)the program on the iodine nutritional status and related health status of residents in Shanghai in 2009;(2)the thyroid disease screening program for adults in Shanghai between 2017 and 2018.The prevalence of TNs and thyroid diseases in 2009 and 2017–2018 were compared,and the potential risk factors of TNs were detected.Results The prevalence of TNs in 2009 was 28.9%:22.5%in males and 34.5%in females.In 2017,this increased to 43.8%:37.9%in males and 49.1%in females.The prevalence of TNs significantly increased from 2009 to 2017(odds ratio,1.486;95%confidence interval,1.238–1.786).In addition,female gender,thyroid disease history,and age were the main risk factors for TNs after adjusting for confounders in the logistic regression across the time period.Conclusion The prevalence of TNs significantly increased across nearly 10 years in Shanghai.

Anti-inflammatory properties of lipoxin A4 protect against diabetes mellitus complicated by focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury

Lipoxin A4 can alleviate cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by reducing the inflammatory reaction,but it is currently unclear whether it has a protective effect on diabetes mellitus complicated by focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.In this study,we established rat models of diabetes mellitus using an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin.We then induced focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 2 hours and reperfusion for 24 hours.After administration of lipoxin A4 via the lateral ventricle,infarction volume was reduced,the expression levels of pro-inflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor alpha and nuclear factor-kappa B in the cerebral cortex were decreased,and neurological functioning was improved.These findings suggest that lipoxin A4 has strong neuroprotective effects in diabetes mellitus complicated by focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and that the underlying mechanism is related to the anti-inflammatory action of lipoxin A4.

Resilience-oriented Transmission Expansion Planning with Optimal Transmission Switching Under Typhoon Weather

This paper presents resilience-oriented transmission expansion planning(RTEP)with optimal transmission switching(OTS)model under typhoon weather.The proposed model carefully considers the uncertainty of component vulnerability by constructing a typhoon-related box uncertainty set where component failure rate varies within a range closely related with typhoon intensity.Accordingly,a min-max-min model is developed to enhance transmission network resilience,where the upper level minimizes transmission lines investment,the middle level searches for the probability distribution of failure status leading to max worst-case expected load-shedding(WCEL)under typhoon,and the lower level optimizes WCEL by economic dispatch(ED)and OTS.A nested decomposition algorithm based on benders decomposition is developed to solve the model.Case studies of modified IEEE 30-bus and 261-bus system of a Chinese region illustrate that:a)the proposed RTEP method can enhance resilience of transmission network with less investment than widely used RTEP method based on attacker and defender(DAD)model,b)the influence of OTS on RTEP is closely related with contingency severity and system scale and c)the RTEP model can be efficiently solved even in a large-scale system.

Mitochondrial dysfunction: A promising therapeutic target for liver diseases

The liver is an important metabolic and detoxification organ and hence demands a large amount of energy,which is mainly produced by the mitochondria.Liver tissues of pa-tients with alcohol-related or non-alcohol-related liver diseases contain ultrastructural mito-chondrial lesions,mitochondrial DNA damage,disturbed mitochondrial dynamics,and compromised ATP production.Overproduction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in-duces oxidative damage to mitochondrial proteins and mitochondrial DNA,decreases mito-chondrial membrane potential,triggers hepatocyte inflammation,and promotes programmed cell death,all of which impair liver function.Mitochondrial DNA may be a poten-tial novel non-invasive biomarker of the risk of progression to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients infected with the hepatitis B virus.We herein present a review of the mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of acute liver injury and chronic liver diseases,such as hepatocellular carcinoma,viral hepatitis,drug-induced liver injury,alcoholic liver disease,and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.This review also discusses mito-chondrion-centric therapies for treating liver diseases.

Effects of acupuncture on hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis:Current status and future perspectives

The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal(HPA) axis is a critical component of the neuroendocrine system,playing a central role in regulating the body's stress response and modulating various physiological processes. Dysregulation of HPA axis function disrupts the neuroendocrine equilibrium, resulting in impaired physiological functions. Acupuncture is recognized as a non-pharmacological type of therapy which has been confirmed to play an important role in modulating the HPA axis and thus favorably targets diseases with abnormal activation of the HPA axis. With numerous studies reporting the promising efficacy of acupuncture for neuroendocrine disorders, a comprehensive review in terms of the underlying molecular mechanism for acupuncture, especially in regulating the HPA axis, is currently in need. This review fills the need and summarizes recent breakthroughs, from the basic principles and the pathological changes of HPA axis dysfunction, to the molecular mechanisms by which acupuncture regulates the HPA axis. These mechanisms include the modulation of multiple neurotransmitters and their receptors, neuropeptides and their receptors, and microRNAs in the paraventricular nucleus,hippocampus, amygdala and pituitary gland, which alleviate the hyperfunctioning of the HPA axis.This review comprehensively summarizes the mechanism of acupuncture in regulating HPA axis dysfunction for the first time, providing new targets and prospects for further exploration of acupuncture.Please cite this article as: zheng JY, Zhu J, wang Y, Tian ZZ. Enhanced conductivity and stability of Prussian blue cathodes in sodium-ion batteries by surface vapor-phase molecular selfassembly

With many merits such as facile synthesis,economy,and relatively high theoretical capacity,Prussian blue analogs(PBAs)are considered promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries(SIBs).However,their practical applications still suffer from a low actual specific capacity and inferior stability owing to the imperfect crystallinity,irreversible phase transition,and low intrinsic conductivity.Herein,a surface-modification technique for vapor-phase molecular self-assembly was developed to prepare Fe-based PBAs,specifically sodium iron hexacyanoferrate(NaFeHCF),with a uniform conductive polymer protective layer of polypyrrole(PPy)on the surface,resulting in NaFeHCF@PPy.The incorporation of a PPy protective layer not only improves the electronic conductivity of NaFeHCF@PPy,but also effectively mitigates the dissolution of Fe-ions during cycling.Specifically,this advanced vapor-phase technique avoids Fe^(2+)oxidation and Na^(+)loss during liquid-phase surface modification.The NaFeHCF@PPy exhibited a remarkably enhanced cycling performance,with capacity retentions of 85.6%and 69.1%over 500 and 1000 cycles,respectively,at 200 mA/g,along with a superior rate performance up to 5 A/g(fast kinetics).Additionally,by adopting this strategy for Mn-based PBAs(NaMnHCF@PPy),we further demonstrated the universality of this method for PBA cathodes in SIBs.

The inadequate quantity of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))in cancer cells promptly results in the constrained success of chemodynamic therapy(CDT).Significant efforts made throughout the years;nevertheless,researchers are still facing the great challenge of designing a CDT agent and securing H_(2)O_(2) supply within the tumor cell.In this study,taking advantage of H_(2)O_(2) level maintenance mechanism in cancer cells,a nanozyme-based bimetallic metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)tandem reactor is fabricated to elevate intracellular H_(2)O_(2) levels,thereby enhancing CDT.In addition,under nearinfrared excitation,the upconversion nanoparticles(UCNPs)loaded into the MOFs can perform photocatalysis and generate hydrogen,which increases cellular susceptibility to radicals induced from H_(2)O_(2),inhibits cancer cell energy,causes DNA damages and induces tumor cell apoptosis,thus improving CDT therapeutic efficacy synergistically.The proposed nanozyme-based bimetallic MOFs-mediated CDT and UCNPs-mediated hydrogen therapy act as combined therapy with high efficacy and low toxicity.

Constructing extrinsic oxygen vacancy on the surface of photocatalyst as CO_(2)and electrons reservoirs to improve photocatalytic CO_(2)reduction activity

Constructing own oxygen vacancies in the photocatalysts is a very promising method to improve their photocatalytic CO_(2)reduction activity.However,some catalysts have excellent stabilities,making it difficult for them to construct their own oxygen vacancies.To simplify the above difficulty of stable photocatalysts,constructing extrinsic oxygen vacancies on their surface as a novel idea is proposed.Here,a stable TiO_(2)nanosheet is chosen as a research object,we uniformly deposited BiOCl quantum dots on their surface via a simple adsorption-deposition method.It is found that BiOCl quantum dots are able to simultaneously self-transform into defective BiOCl with many oxygen vacancies when the photocatalyst is performed photocatalytic CO_(2)reduction.These extrinsic oxygen vacancies can act as“CO_(2)and photo-generated electrons reservoirs”to improve CO_(2)capture and accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes.For the above reasons,the modified TiO_(2)showed obvious enhancement of photocatalytic CO_(2)reduction compared to pristine TiO_(2)and BiOCl.This work may open a new avenue to broaden the use of oxygen vacancies in the process of photocatalytic CO_(2)reduction.

Insufficient TRPM5 Mediates Lipotoxicity-induced Pancreaticβ-cell Dysfunction

Objective:While the reduction of transient receptor potential channel subfamily M member 5(TRPM5)has been reported in islet cells from type 2 diabetic(T2D)mouse models,its role in lipotoxicity-induced pancreaticβ-cell dysfunction remains unclear.This study aims to study its role.Methods:Pancreas slices were prepared from mice subjected to a high-fat-diet(HFD)at different time points,and TRPM5 expression in the pancreaticβcells was examined using immunofluorescence staining.Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion(GSIS)defects caused by lipotoxicity were mimicked by saturated fatty acid palmitate(Palm).Primary mouse islets and mouse insulinoma MIN6 cells were treated with Palm,and the TRPM5 expression was detected using qRT-PCR and Western blotting.Palm-induced GSIS defects were measured following siRNA-based Trpm5 knockdown.The detrimental effects of Palm on primary mouse islets were also assessed after overexpressing Trpm5 via an adenovirus-derived Trpm5(Ad-Trpm5).Results:HFD feeding decreased the mRNA levels and protein expression of TRPM5 in mouse pancreatic islets.Palm reduced TRPM5 protein expression in a time-and dose-dependent manner in MIN6 cells.Palm also inhibited TRPM5 expression in primary mouse islets.Knockdown of Trpm5 inhibited insulin secretion upon high glucose stimulation but had little effect on insulin biosynthesis.Overexpression of Trpm5 reversed Palm-induced GSIS defects and the production of functional maturation molecules unique toβcells.Conclusion:Our findings suggest that lipotoxicity inhibits TRPM5 expression in pancreaticβcells both in vivo and in vitro and,in turn,drivesβ-cell dysfunction.
