Purpose: To develop a new technique for fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) in the absence of posterior capsule *** and Methods: We performed non-trans-scleral fixation of intraocular lenses on 24 cases (24 eyes) without posterior capsule support. Two scleral flaps with limbal incisions and two peripheral iridectomies were made at 1 o' clock and 7 o' clock positions respectively. A suture-leading needle was used to lead the prolene suture from the limbal incision and iridectomy on one side through the iridectomy and limbal incision on the other side. Intraocular lens (IOL) was then fixed in the ciliary sulcus. Results: After a mean follow-up of 6. 6 months (range from 3 to 14 months), corrected visual acuity of 16 cases (16 eyes,66. 7% ) got 0.5 or better. Postoperative complications included discoria (4 eyes) , surface membrane formation ( 1 eye ), choroidal detachment (1 eye) and tilt of IOL (1 eyes),but all were not severe. The effectiveness of capsulotomy with Nd:YAG laser and with bent needle were compared in 50 patients(66 eyes) with congenital cataract. There were 24 patients(32 eyes) in the laser group and 26 patients(34 eyes) in the needle group. There were not significant differences in sex, age, pre-operative visual acuity and intraocular pressures, and classification of cataract between the two groups. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of one-site combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy in the management of cataract patients with drug-controllable glaucoma. Methods : Twenty-four cases (25 eyes) of cataract patients with glaucoma whose intraocular pressure could be controlled by drugs were observed. All had undergone one-site combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy. Intraocular pressure and visual acuity were ***: The follow-up was 1-21 months. Postoperative visual acuity was 0.4-0.6 in 9 eyes, 0.7-0.9 in 7 eyes and 1.0 or better in 9 eyes. Postoperative intraocular pressure was 2.17±0.764kPa (16.28±5.73mmHg), 1.83±0.90kPa (13.74 ± 6. 77mmHg) lower than that before surgery (t= 11.89, P<0.01). Comparison of Trans-scleral Fixation of PMMA and Foldable Intraocular Lens in Children

Purpose: To observe the difference of the effects of PMMA and foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) trans-sclerally fixed in pediatric eyes.Methods: Thirty-two children (43 eyes) who had undergone trans-scleral fixation of IOL were retrospected, of whom 5 children were implanted PMMA IOL in both eyes, 6children were implanted PMMA IOL in one eye and foldable IOL in the other eye, 12children were implanted foldable IOL in one eye and 9 chilrden were implanted PMMA IOL in one eye. Mean age was 5.3 years ( range 2.5 ～ 12 years ). Twelve children had traumatic cataract and the others congenital cataract before lens extraction.Results: Foldable group (18 eyes ): Mean follow-up was 12.1 months. Visual acuity (VA): compared with the best corrected VA before IOL fixation, postoperative best corrected VA improved in 16 eyes, remained unchanged in 2 eyes. In 14 eyes, one or two stitches were needed to seal the incision. Complications: Severe anterior chamber reaction was seen in 3 eyes. Intraocular bleeding was found in 3 eyes. IOL decentration was detected in 1 eye. Iris capture of IOL was seen in one eye. PMMA group (25 eyes ):Mean follow-up was 20.3 months. Visual acuity (VA): compared with the best corrected VA before IOL fixation, postoperative best corrected VA improved in 19 eyes,remained unchanged in 5 eyes and got worse in one eye. In 24 eyes, one to three stitches were needed to seal the incision. Complications: Severe anterior chamber reaction was seen in 5 eyes. Intraocular bleeding was found in 4 eyes. IOL decentration was seen in one eye. Iris capture of IOL was seen in 3 eyes. Intraocular pressure elevated in one eye.Conclusion: Our study shows that trans-scleral fixation of IOL is a safe procedure in pediatric eyes. Foldable IOL showed similar effect compared with PMMA IOL in pediatric trans-scleral fixation. Eye Science 2001; 17:61 ～ 64.

We present 14 patients with secondary gluacoma following the implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (lOLs). All patients were u-nilateral gluacoma , which developed within 1 month following the IOL implantation in 10 cases, and from 1 to 3 years in 4 cases. The preoperative and postoperative PVEP in 79 eyes of 45 patients with three types of congenital namely lamellar cataract, nuclear cataract and total cataract was studied. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of cataract surgery on eyes of children between 1-5 years *** and Methods : Forty- seven cases of pediatric cataract, including 31 cases of bilateral congenital cataract and 16 cases of unilateral posttraumatic cataract, were retrospected. Of the 31 cases of congenital cataract, 19 cases (group l) had undergone cataract extraction with intraocular lens(IOL) implantation, 12 (group 2) had undergone cataract extraction without IOL implantation. Each of them had their two eyes operated seperately at an interval of 1 year or longer. Of the 16 cases of posttraumatic catatract,6 (group 3) had undergone cataract extraction with IOL implantation and 10 (group 4) had undergone cataract extraction without IOL implantation. Mean age at the time of interested surgery was 2.9 years ( range from 1.1 to 5.1 years) . Purpose: To investigate whether liposome encapsulated total alkaloid of Harmaline (TAH) as a therapeutic agent is beneficial to prevention of posterior capsular opacifi-cation (PCO).Methods: liposome-encapsulated TAH was prepared by modified freeze-thawing method. 0. 1ml of liposome-encapsulated TAH (0. 2mg/ml) was injected into the capsular bag during extracapsular lens extraction (ECLE) of each eye in total 10 rabbit eyes. Blank liposome or balance salt solution (BSS) was used as control. Slit-lamp examination and histopathological examination was used to evaluated capsule opacifica-tion. Intraocular pressure (IOP) , density and morphology of corneal endothelia cells, the amplitude and latency of b wave of ERG were ***: The inflammatory response was mild both in TAH treated and the control group. The Visual Deprivation and Increase in Axial Length in Patients with Cataracts

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between axial myopia and visual deprivation in patients with cataracts in their ***: Forty myopic eyes of 25 cases had long deprivation of form vision due to cataracts during their youth. The axial length was measured by A-Scan ***: The axial length is 2-6mm (mean: 3. 7mm) longer than the other eyes in 10 patients with unilateral cataracts. Fifteen cases with bilateral cataracts had 25-29mm of axial length (mean of the right eyes 26-8mm and the left eyes: 26. 7mm). Six cases with unilateral cataract had traumatic histotry at age from 2-9 years (mean: 5. 1 years) and the duration of visual deprivation due to cataract was from 8 to 30 years (mean; 12 years). Thirteen cases with dilateral congenital cataract had 17- 4 years(from 3 to 37 years) of visual deprivation. Concusion: The deprivation of form vision due to cataracts in childhood leads to in crease in axial length and myopia. Eye Science 1996; 12: 135- 137.

Purpose:To study the ability of Homoharringtonine(Hh),5-Fluorouracil(5-Fu).and Adriamycin(ADM)on inhibiting the proliferation of rabbit lens epitthelium,*** rabbit lenses were removed from freshly enucleated eyes under sterile *** rabbit lens eptithlia(RLE)were isolated and culatured:(1)The passage RLE were placed in 24-well tissue culture plates and incubated for *** exposed to different concentrations of Hh,5-Fu,and ADMfor 24and 72hours;(2)The passage RLEandHh(0.084μg/ml).5-Fu(0.058μg/ml）,ADM(0.45ng/ml)were placed and cultured for 24hours;(3)The morphological changes of RLE exposed to different concentrations of Hh,5-Fu and ADM were studied under light ***:The ID50 of Hh,5-Fu and ADMexposed to RLEfor 24hours were 0.84μg/ml, 0.58μg/ml and4.50ng/ml,respectively,and those for 72hous were0.49μg/ml,0.33μg/ml and3.85ng/*** attachment rate of RLE after being cu-latured for 24hours with Hh,5-Fu and ADM were respectinely83.6%,89.1%and 87.3%,The morphological changes of RLE demonstrated that obvious changes in the cell membran e and cytoplasm were found even in lower concentra-tion ,but changes in the nuclei could only be found in higher concentation of these ***:Hh can not only inhibit the proliferation of RLE but also reduce the number of attached *** is suggested that Hh may be more useful for the pre-vention of after cataract than 5-Fu and ADM.
