A growth model for a hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri in the coastal water of Alexandria(Egypt)

The growth rate of the hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri was studied on the bases of Ikeda'sgrowth model which is based on the inter moult period (IP) and moult increament (△BL). To apply this approach, laboratory experiments were carried out at three temperatures regimes (15℃, 20℃, 25℃ ) to gain accurate data of IP and BL. The total number of specimens used in this study was 86 at 15℃ , 24 at 20℃ and 70 at 25℃. The number of flagellar segments of both antennae of the Hyale perieri could not be used as an index of growth (instar criterion). The obtained results indicated that, the predicted IP of the specimens was inversely related to temperature and in good agreement with the observed values at the experimental temperatures. IP data obtained from laboratory-reared specimes are combined with ABL data to establish a growth model for Hyale perieri from its release from the mar-supium (1.64 mm BL ) to the maximum size (12.67 mm BL) as a function of temperature. The maximum numbers of consecutive moults recorded during the experiment were 13 moults (14 instar) at 15℃, 14 moults (15 instar) at 20℃ and 12 moults (13 instar) at 25℃ . The predicted life span for BL = 12.67 mm (moult 13) was 203.82 d at 15t, for BL = 11.75 mm (moult 14) was 138.94 d at 20℃ and for BL = 8.65 mm (moult 12) was 75.40 d at 25℃ respectively, thus confirming that the life span of the species is inversely proportional to temperature. Within the experimental temperatures tested, the optimum temperature for the growth of the species was 20℃.

A Flat-Gain double-Pass Amplifier with New Hafnia-Bismuth-Erbium Codoped Fiber

An efficient and compact double-pass optical fiber amplifier is demonstrated using a newly developed hafnia bismuth erbium co-doped fiber（HBEdF） as a gain medium. The HBEdF is fabricated using a.m.dified chemical vapor deposition in conjunction with solution doping. The fiber has an erbium ion concentration of 12500 *** the optimum length of 0.5 m, the HBEdF amplifier（HBEdFA） achieves a flat gain of 26 d B with a gain variation of less than 1.5 d B within a wavelength region from 1530 to 1560 nm when the input signal and pump power are fixed at-30 d Bm and 140 m W, respectively. On the other hand, at the input signal power of-10 d Bm,the HBEdFA also achieves a flat gain of 14.2 d B with a gain variation of less than 2.5 d B within a wide wavelength region from 1525 to 1570 nm. Compared with the conventional zirconia erbium co-doped fiber based amplifier,the proposed HBEdFA obtains a more efficient gain and lower noise figure. For an input signal of-30 d Bm, the gain improvements of 6.2 d B and 4.8 d B are obtained at 1525 nm and 1540 nm, respectively.

Grapevine is a perennial crop often cultivated by grafting a scion cultivar on a suitable *** influence scions,particularly with regard to water uptake and ***,one of the possibilities to adapt viticulture to the extended drought stress periods is to select rootstocks conferring increased tolerance to ***,the molecular mechanisms associated with the ability of rootstock/scion combination to influence grape berry metabolism under drought stress are still poorly *** transcriptomic changes induced by drought stress in grape berries(*** noir)from vines grafted on either 110R(drought-tolerant)or 125AA(drought-sensitive)rootstock were *** experiments were conducted in the vineyard for two years and two grape berry developmental stages(50%and 100%veraison).The genome-wide microarray approach showed that water stress strongly impacts gene expression in the berries,through ontology categories that cover cell wall metabolism,primary and secondary metabolism,signaling,stress,and hormones,and that some of these effects strongly depend on the rootstock ***,under drought stress,berries from vines grafted on 110R displayed a different transcriptional response compared to 125AA-concerning genes related to jasmonate(JA),phenylpropanoid metabolism,and pathogenesis-related *** data also suggest a link between JA and secondary metabolism in water-stressed ***,genes related to secondary metabolism and JA are more induced and/or less repressed by drought stress in the berries grafted on the drought-sensitive rootstock *** rootstock-dependent gene expression changes are relevant for berry composition and sensory properties.

Utility of Styrylpyrazoloformimidate in the Synthesis of Fused Heterocyclic Compounds

Refluxing of (E)-5-amino-1-phenyl-3-styryl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbonitrile 2 with triethylor-thoformate in acetic anhydride afforded the corresponding formimidate 3. Treatment of 3 with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol afforded amino imino compound 4. Reaction of 4 with diethyl dicarbonate at reflux gave (E)-7-phenyl-9-styryl-7H-pyrazolo[4,3-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine 7. Refluxing of 4 with hydrazine hydrate afforded (E)-4-hydrazinyl-1-phenyl-3-styryl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d] pyrimidine 8. Treatment of the latter compound 8 with aldehydes in boiling ethanol in the presence of acetic acid afforded the corresponding hydrazone 10. Oxidative cyclization of the hydrazone 10 led to the formation of pyrazolo[4,3-e][1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-c]pyrimidine 11. The latter products re-arranged to pyrazolo[4,3-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidines 13. The structures of the new products were established on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral data.

An Overview of Bangladeshi Shipbuilding in the Light of Competitive Parameters

Shipbuilding in Bangladesh has been considered as the most promising industry in the recent time and the country is dreaming to emerge as a.m.ddle income country within a short time by maintaining the upward trend of this sector. However, due to global nature and the long term sustainability of this shipbuilding industry, an investigation of competitiveness in terms of global standard is of prime importance. This paper focuses on studying some crucial competitive factors like labor skill, labor availability, labor man-hour, labor cost ＆ productivity for local shipbuilding in Bangladesh. The analysis also focuses on existing access to the resources like materials, knowledge and capital which are equally important factors for the expansion of shipbuilding. Comparison of these parameters with other nations have been made qualitatively and quantitatively to find the level of our shipbuilding. On the basis of existing condition and future vision, some recommendations have been made which might be useful for accelerating the development of this sector.

Evaluation of Some Radioactive materials and Heavy metals in marine Environment of Alexandria Coastline, Egypt

The present work is carried out to obtain quantitative information of some natural radioactive materials and heavy metals in water and sediment samples along the Alexandria Coastline, as a step to construct the baseline map of the background radioactivity level in the Egyptian environment and also as a base data to assess the future physicochemical changes of surface coastal water and sediment in the studied area. The distribution of natural gamma emitting radionuclides such as 238U, 232Th and 40K has been established by gamma spectrometry. The results show that the area of Alexandria coast is affected by the existence of high back-ground radiation from the Rashid coast at the eastern side which has high levels of radioisotope concentrations due to black sand deposits which are dominant in this area. The absorbed dose rate (d, nGy·h-1), annual effective dose equivalent, external hazard index (Hex) and representative level index (Ir) of the investigated radioactive materials were calculated. The concentration of Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, mn2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+ and Cr3+ ions has been determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The total dissolved solids (TdS) in water samples ranged from 33,000 mg/l to 42,000 mg/l, the salinity ranged from 37.9% to 40.5% and pH ranged from 7.6 to 7.9. Some of the sediment quality guidelines are calculated and they are the metal pollution index (mPI), the contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (Cdeg), and Pollution load index (PLI).

macro rainwater harvesting techniques (macro RWH) are getting more popular to overcome the problem of water scarcity in arid and semi-arid areas. Iraq is experiencing serious water shortage problem now despite of the presence of Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. RWH can help to overcome this problem. In this research, RWH was applied in Koya City in its districts, North West Iraq. Twenty-two basins were identified as the catchment area for the application of RWH technique. Watershed modeling system (WmS), based on Soil Conservation Service-curve number (SCS-CN) method, was applied to calculate direct runoff from individual daily rain storm using average annual rainfall records of the area. Two consecutive adjustments for the curve number were considered. The first was for the antecedent moisture condition (AmC) and the second was for the slope. These adjustments increased the total resultant harvested runoff up to 79.402 × 106 m3. The average percentage of increase of harvested runoff volume reached 9.28%. This implies that water allocation is of the order of 2000 cubic meter per capita per year. This quantity of water will definitely help to develop the area.

Study of Vitamin d Receptor (VdR) Gene Polymorphisms among Egyptian Cohort Patients with different Stages of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer represents the third cancer worldwide. Studies showed thatinsufficient levels of vitamin d may result in colorectal cancer. Genetic variations in genes controlling vitamin d activity would play a role in determining susceptibility to colorectal cancer. Aim of the work: to study the different genotypes of VdR polymorphisms and detect the association between serum levels of 25(OH)Vitd and 1,25(OH)2Vitd among sample of Egyptian patients with different stages of colorectal cancer. methods: Ninety patients (60 with different stages of colorectal cancer and 30 patients with benign pathology of the colon) together with 30 healthy controls were examined using PCR-RFLP analysis for FokI, ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms. Results: Genotype distribution for ApaI polymorphism showed no statistically significant difference between patients (colorectal cancer and benign) and controls with p = 0.1. There was no statistically significant difference in FokI polymorphism where p = 0.26 and genotype distribution for TaqI was also insignificant with p = 0.016. The median serum level of 25(OH)Vitd was low in cancer cases compared to the control group and benign cases with (p 0.001). There was no statisticallysignificant difference of median serum level of 1,25(OH)2Vitd between benign and cancer cases. There was statistically significant difference of median serum level of 25(OH)Vitd and 1,25(OH)2Vitd between stage I and stage II with (p = 0.004) and (p 0.001), and between stage I and stage III with (p = 0.001)and (p 0.001), but no statistically significant difference between stage II and III with (p = 0.514). Conclusions: There is ethnic variability in vitamin d receptor gene polymorphisms. The lack of significant association of the studied gene polymorphism in our population suggests that its association with other functionally known gene polymorphism might have a role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.
