Self-Medication of Senegalese Women through Social Networks

Self-medication is a form of self-care which has evolved considerably with the development of digital technology. It particularly challenges public health actors given the risks to which it may be exposed if it is not properly supervised. The aim of this work was to study the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Senegalese women on self-medication through social networks. A transversal descriptive study was conducted from June 10 to 30, 2019. It concerned all Senegalese women registered in at least one of the following women’s Facebook groups: Femme chic, Femme leader, Ladies club or Entre yaays. A study information sheet was posted on the wall of these different groups, and enabled consenting women to find a questionnaire deployed online directly through a link. Consenting women were able to complete the data collection tool directly online. The proportions were compared by setting the alpha risk at 5%. A total of 508 women were surveyed. The results thus showed a high prevalence (68.9%) of self-medication. A proportion of 46.3% of those self-medicated used Facebook or the Internet as a source of information to find the drugs to use. The advice received from these groups related to hygiene and dietary measures (96.1%), consultation with health personnel (54.6%), consultation with a traditional healer (50.4%) and taking medication (41.8%). The health problems most treated with these self-medications were headaches ((84.6%) and painful periods (45.1%). Simple analgesics (84.6%) and vitamins (66.9%) were the most recommended drugs, but it was also found antibiotics (40.0%), centrally acting analgesics (20.0%), anti-diabetics (6.9%) and antihypertensive (5.4%). Oral tablets (92.3%) remained the most widely used dosage forms, but eye drops (5.4%) and injectables (5.4%) were also found. The National Spinal Cord Injury Registry of Iran(NSCIR-IR)is a not-for-profit,hospital-based,and prospective observational registry that appraises the quality of care,long-term outcomes and the personal and psychological burden of traumatic spinal cord injury in *** validity in every registry includes rigorous attention to data *** quality assurance is essential for any registry to make sure that correct patients are being enrolled and that the data being collected are *** reviewed strengths and weaknesses of the NSCIR-IR while considering the methodological guidelines and recommendations for efficient and rational governance of patient *** summary,the steering committee,funded and maintained by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of Iran,the international collaborations,continued staff training,suitable data quality,and the ethical approval are considered to be the strengths of the registry,while limited human and financial resources,poor interoperability with other health systems,and time-consuming processes are among its main weaknesses.

Dasatinib is a second-line tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in patients with imatinib resistant or intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia chromosomepositive acute leukemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding may occur in up to 7% of patients using dasatinib, although, severe dasatinib-related acute colitis had rarely been reported. Here, we present the case of a 36-year-old female who progressed to acute myeloid leukemia after fourteen months of receiving imatinib for CML in the chronic phase and was treated with a dasatinib-containing chemotherapy regimen. On day 34 of treatment, the patient developed moderate abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea with mucous. Analyses of stool specimens were negative for parasites, Clostridium difficile , and other pathogenic bacteria. The cytomegalovirus pp65 antigen was negative in her blood leukocytes. A colonoscopy revealed acute colitis, and a mucosal biopsy showed nonspecific colitis. The patient was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, bowel rest and hydration, and dasatinib treatment was stopped. Her bloody diarrhea improved within 72 h. After confirming cytological remission, the patient received initial course of consolidation, and dasatinib treatment was reinstated. However, hemorrhagic colitis recurred. After discontinuing dasatinib, herhemorrhagic colitis drastically improved and did not recur following the administration of nilotinib. The characteristics of our patient suggest that dasatinib treatment can lead to hemorrhagic colitis, which typically resolves after discontinuation of the drug.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a hereditary disorder that affects primarily the elastic tissues of skin, eyes and blood vessels. Its estimated prevalence is thought to be 1:25,000 - 100,000. PXE patients also carry an increased risk for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. Early diagnosis can play a crucial role in preventing early loss of vision and systemic complications in these patients however despite having characteristic clinical features;it is still to a large extent being under-diagnosed. Here we present two cases of PXE with reduced vision.

目的:探讨隐形眼镜基线(BC)和角膜曲率结果(Krf)之间简单的数学相关性。方法:本回顾性研究包括350例400只圆锥角膜的眼睛,其先前五年在学院眼科中心验配硬性隐形眼镜。根据角膜曲率结果患者被分为五组,分别为Krf8,Krf-Krs(两个角膜曲率的差异;平坦和陡峭)=0.3-0.6,Krf-Krs>0.6mm1至5组,使用多元线性回归和蒙罗相关系数推测公式。结果:除了第3组患者,可以在所有组中发现线性相关。第1组,BC=0.211×5.904Krf。第2组,BC=0.456×Krf4.160。第4组,BC=0.321×5.219Krf。第5组,BC=0.337×Krf+5.090。结论:RGP验配新公式的发展,可增强眼科医生工作的信心,避免不必要的和频繁的眼镜试验。通常的隐形眼镜验配方法需要更换新的公式,从而帮助节省时间和费用。

Time Management of Open Lower-Leg Fractures in Morocco

Background: It is recommended that the management of open lower-leg fractures should occur within six hours to avoid complications affecting both prognosis and functionality. This study aimed to evaluate the time taken for each step of management, identify causes of delay, and propose solutions to reduce the rate of complications. Patients and methods: This was a prospective study involving 153 patients treated from January 2011 to December 2012. Standardized data collection forms documented the times taken for each management step from the accident until surgical intervention. Results: For patients admitted directly to our institution, median time to surgical debridement from arrival was 5 hours. Median time for bone fixation was 24 hours. External fixation was used in 119 patients. There were several causes of delay;lack of financial resources was the most common. Certain causes of delay were significantly correlated with time to debridement. However, although 86.7% of patients who developed an infection had a time from injury to debridement greater than six hours, there was no statistically significant association between infection and delay beyond six hours (p = 0.403). Conclusion: By identifying causes of treatment delay, we hope to be able to avoid complications, and therefore reduce the socio- economic impact of these important surgical emergencies.

Objective: In patients with spinal cord injury, one of the factors that have a major role in the skeletal bone mass and bone health is nutrition. The two necessary nutrients for bone health are calcium and vitamin D. Dairy products and animal sources have been identified as the main sources for calcium and vitamin D in the diet. This study tries to compare serum 25-hydroxyl vitamin D levels and calcium with dietary intakes of chronic spinal cord injury persons. Method: 162 participants, 18-62 years of age, apparently healthy patients with a spinal cord injury were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Their dietary intakes were assessed by a semi quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Serum calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D were measured. Results: In four different SCI patients group, the percentages of calcium, vitamin D and dairy intake except phosphorous were below guideline reference and were not age or sex dependent. The average values of serum total calcium in age < 40, was significantly more than age ≥ 40. A high percentage (43.6 %) of vitamin D deficiency was defined for the study patients. Conclusion: Conclusions: Calcium and vitamin D deficiency has been identified in spinal cord injury patients. Adequate sunlight exposure plus supplementation, fortified dairy intake for long periods, correction of nutritional deficits, and nutritional patient education is highly recommended.

A 51-year-old female with a history of radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation for a breast cancer was referred to the emergency room due to cholangitis. A CT scan showed a common bile duct mass invading the duodenum. After bile draining, the investigations led to an undifferentiated carcinoma with positive hormonal receptors. The diagnosis of a breast cancer recurrence was established and the patient was commenced on taxane therapy.
