Stenting as a bridge to surgery in obstructing colon cancer:Longterm recurrence pattern and competing risk of mortality

BACKGROUND Stenting as a bridge to curative surgery(SBTS)for obstructing colon cancer(OCC)has been associated with possibly worse oncological *** To evaluate the recurrence patterns,survival outcomes,and colorectal cancer(CRC)-specific death in patients undergoing SBTS for *** Data from 62 patients undergoing SBTS at a single tertiary centre over ten years between 2007 and 2016 were retrospectively *** outcomes were recurrence patterns,overall survival(OS),cancer-specific survival(CSS),and CRC-specific *** and CSS were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier *** risk analysis with cumulative incidence function(CIF)was used to estimate CRC-specific mortality with other cause-specific death as a competing ***-Gray regressions were performed to determine prognostic factors of CRC-specific *** and multivariate subdistribution hazard ratios and their corresponding Wald test P values were *** 28 patients(45.2%)developed metastases after a median period of 16 *** the 18 patients with single-site metastases:Four had lung-only metastases(14.3%),four had liver-only metastases(14.3%),and 10 had peritoneum-only metastases(35.7%),while 10 patients had two or more sites of metastatic disease(35.7%).The peritoneum was the most prevalent(60.7%)site of metastatic involvement(17/28).The median follow-up duration was 46 mo.26(41.9%)of the 62 patients died,of which 16(61.5%)were CRC-specific deaths and 10(38.5%)were deaths owing to other causes. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS probabilities were 88%, 74%, and 59%;1-, 3-, and5-year CSS probabilities were 97%, 83%, and 67%. The highest CIF for CRC-specific death at 60 mowas liver-only recurrence (0.69). Dysfunction of synaptic endocytic trafficking in Parkinson's disease

Graph neural networks have been shown to be very effective in utilizing pairwise relationships across ***,there have been several successful proposals to generalize graph neural networks to hypergraph neural networks to exploit more com-plex *** particular,the hypergraph collaborative networks yield superior results compared to other hypergraph neural net-works for various semi-supervised learning *** collaborative network can provide high quality vertex embeddings and hyperedge embeddings together by formulating them as a joint optimization problem and by using their consistency in reconstructing the given *** this paper,we aim to establish the algorithmic stability of the core layer of the collaborative network and provide generaliz--ation *** analysis sheds light on the design of hypergraph filters in collaborative networks,for instance,how the data and hypergraph filters should be scaled to achieve uniform stability of the learning *** experimental results on real-world datasets are presented to illustrate the theory.

NF-κB promotes the stem-like properties of leukemia cells by activation of LIN28B

AIM To examine whether nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) activity regulates LIN28 B expression and their roles in leukemia stem cell(LSC)-like properties. METHODS We used pharmacological inhibitor and cell viability assays to examine the relation between NF-κB and LIN28 B. Western blot and q RT-PCR was employed to determine their protein and m RNA levels. Luciferase reporter was constructed and applied to explore the transcriptional regulation of LIN28 B. We manipulated LIN28 B level in acute myeloid leukemia(AML) cells and investigated LSC-like properties with colony forming and serial replating assays. RESULTS This study revealed the relationship between NF-κB and LIN28 B in AML cells through drug inhibition and overexpression experiments. Notably,inhibition of NF-κB by pharmacological inhibitors reduced LIN28 B expression and decreased cell proliferation. We demonstrated that NF-κB binds to the-819 to-811 region of LIN28 B promoter,and transcriptionally regulates LIN28 B expression. LIN28 B protein was significantly elevated in NFκB1 transfected cells compared to vector control. Importantly,ectopic expression of LIN28 B partially rescued the self-renewal capacity impaired by pharmacological inhibition of NF-κB activity. CONCLUSION These results uncover a regulatory signaling,NF-κB/LIN28 B,which plays a pivotal role in leukemia stem cell-like properties and it could serve as a promising intervening target for effective treatment of AML disease.

Mg/MgO interfaces as efficient hydrogen evolution cathodes causing accelerated corrosion of additive manufactured Mg alloys:A DFT analysis

The corrosion rates of additive-manufactured Mg alloys are higher than their as-cast counterparts,possibly due to increased kinetics for the hydrogen evolution reaction on secondary phases,which may include oxide *** Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy demonstrated that MgO inclusions could act as cathodes for Mg corrosion,but their low conductivity likely precludes ***,the density of state calculations through density functional theory using hybrid HSE06 functional revealed overlapping electronic states at the Mg/MgO interface,which facilitates electron transfers and participates in redox *** determination of the hydrogen absorption energy at the Mg/MgO interface reveals it to be an excellent catalytic site,with HER being found to be a factor of 23x more efficient at the interface than on metallic *** results not only support the plausibility of the Mg/MgO interface being an effective cathode to the adjacent anodic Mg matrix during corrosion but also contribute to the understanding of the enhanced cathodic activities observed during the anodic dissolution of magnesium.

In this big data era, the use of large dataset in conjunction with machine learning (ML) has been increasingly popular in both industry and academia. In recent times, the field of materials science is also undergoing a big data revolution, with large database and repositories appearing everywhere. Traditionally, materials science is a trial-and-error field, in both the computational and experimental departments. With the advent of machine learning-based techniques, there has been a paradigm shift: materials can now be screened quickly using ML models and even generated based on materials with similar properties;ML has also quietly infiltrated many sub-disciplinary under materials science. However, ML remains relatively new to the field and is expanding its wing quickly. There are a plethora of readily-available big data architectures and abundance of ML models and software;The call to integrate all these elements in a comprehensive research procedure is becoming an important direction of material science research. In this review, we attempt to provide an introduction and reference of ML to materials scientists, covering as much as possible the commonly used methods and applications, and discussing the future possibilities.
