A study was carried out to determine the relative susceptibility of six maize(Zea mays L.) varieties to maize weevil,sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky(Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It was conducted at Department of Crop Protection Laboratory,University of Ilorin, Nigeria at ambient temperature of 28±2℃ and 68%±3% relative humidity. samples of the varieties were infestedwith five pairs of s. zeamais adults in their respective containers arranged in completely randomized design with three *** were collected on moisture content, adult mortality, adult emergence, grain loss and grain damage. The index of susceptibilityand means of damage parameters were used to determine susceptibility of the maize varieties. The results showed that 2008 sYNEE W DT sTR was highly resistant and 2004 TZE-W POP sTR C4 was moderately resistant, while 2004 TZE-Y-POP sTR C4,99 TZEE-Y-sTR, EV99 QPM and TZE-Y-POP DT sTR QPM C_0s1 were susceptible. Under artificial infestation, the weevils hadsignificantly longer survival period in the susceptible varieties than those in the resistant genotype. It could be concluded that thesusceptible varieties already released to farmers should be protected from maize weevil damage.

目的:探讨比较尼日利亚Gwagwalada原发性开角型青光眼(POAG)与非青光眼患者的临床社会人口学特征。方法:横断面对比研究。共调查235例成年患者,其中96例POAG及139例非青光眼。记录患者年龄、性别、教育程度、职业、种族、青光眼家族史、眼痒、糖尿病和高血压情况。眼部检查包括视力、中央视野、杯盘比、前房角评估和眼压。结果:平均年龄为49.88±13.75岁,其中男114例(48.5%)。POAG患者包括42个种族,其中伊博人(24/96,25.0%)和约鲁巴人(20/96,20.8%)最为常见。大多数POAG(74/96,77.1%)年龄在40-69岁之间。POAG(73/96,76.0%)有不同程度的视力障碍。POAG组与非青光眼组的对比如下:青光眼阳性家族史(34/96,35.4%)vs(25/139,18.0%;P=0.012);糖尿病史(8/96,8.3%)vs(6/139,4.3%);高血压病史(24/96,25.0%)vs(28/139,20.1%);糖尿病合并高血压病史(1/96,1.0%)vs(4/139,2.9%;P=0.268);使用抗糖尿病药物者(5/96,5.2%)vs(7/139,5.0%);使用降压药者(24/96,25.0%)vs(23/139,16.5%);联合使用抗糖尿病和抗高血压药物者(4/96,4.2%)vs(5/139,3.6%;P=0.328);有眼痒症状者(18/96,18.7%)vs(37/139,26.6%;P=0.328);视力障碍[右眼(RE):51/96,53.1%;左眼(LE):60/96,62.5%]vs(RE:40/139,28.7%;LE:37/139,26.6%;P=0.000);垂直杯盘比>0.4(RE:96/96,100%;LE:96/96,100%)vs(RE:131/139,94.2%;LE:124/139,89.2%)(RE:P=0.307;LE:P=0.006);眼压>22 mmHg(RE:17/96,17.7%;LE:22/96,22.9%)vs(RE:2/139,1.4%;LE:2/139,1.4%;P=0.006)。大多数POAG患者(60/96,62.5%)正在服用抗青光眼药物,(23/96,24.0%)尚未开始用药,P=0.000。许多POAG(32/96,33.3%)正在服用β受体阻滞剂、前列腺素抑制剂和碳酸酐酶抑制剂的联合抗青光眼药物。结论:青光眼具有与其他眼部疾病不同的临床社会人口学特征。许多参与者肯定了青光眼的家族史,大多数青光眼参与者正在接受抗青光眼治疗。包括失明在内的视力障碍与青光眼显著相关。该研究证实,开角型青光眼与高杯盘比和高眼内压有关。

This was a cohort study of in vitro fertilization(IVF)subjects at the University of Utah,salt Lake City(UT,UsA)utilizing partner *** where both the hamster egg penetration test(HEPT)and semen analysis were performed within 2 years prior to IVF cycles were stratified into four groups based on a normal or an abnormal HEPT and *** mean conventional and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICsI)fertilization rates were calculated in each *** performed a univariate analysis on the primary outcome comparing clinically interesting *** performed a cost-effectiveness analysis of a policy of HEPT versus universal ICsI in couples with an abnormal *** patients with a normal HEPT,there was no difference in the mean conventional fertilization rates between those with a normal and an abnormal *** was no difference in the mean conventional fertilization rates between subjects with a normal morphology without a hamster test and those with a normal HEPT without a morphology *** 1000 simulated cycles with an abnormal morphology,a policy of HEPT was cost saving compared to universal ICsI,yet produced similar fertilization *** HEPT is similar to the World Health Organization edition 5(WHO-5)morphology in predicting successful conventional fertilization while allowing decreased utilization of ICsI.A policy of HEPT for males with abnormal morphology saves cost in selecting couples for a fertilization method.

Albendazole is an orally administered broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic used against helminthiasis,hydatid cyst disease and *** objectives of this investigation are to develop a sustained release drug delivery system for albendazole,and to target its delivery to *** matrix tablets containing varying proportions of single and binary blends of four polymers;polyacrylic acid(carbopol 971),ethylcellulose(Etcell),eudragit L100-55(EUD),and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) were prepared by a modified wet granulation technique of kneading,extrusion and *** vitro release profiles of albendazole was sequentially determined in simulated gastric fluid(sGF),simulated intestinal fluid(sIF) without enzymes and in rat caecal content medium(RCCM) at 37 ℃.The in vitro drug release from matrix tablets containing CMC and Etcell as single polymers showed initial burst effect in the first 2 h(>20% and 50% respectively),followed by a slow release in ***,matrix tablets containing polymer blends showed that no appreciable drug release occurred up to 5 *** release from tablets containing polymer blends in the dissolution medium containing rat caecal material suddenly increased to ≥30% after 5 h(RCCM),and reaching up to 90% in 24 *** matrix tablets containing carbopol 971,Etcell,EUD,and CMC as single polymers and as blends were formulated for oral *** release from the tablet matrices containing carbopol alone,binary blends of carbopol/Etcell,and CMC/EUD were found to be very slow and dependent on polymer *** tablets containing blends of these polymers formulated using kneading,extrusion and compaction technique could provide sustained drug release and can be utilized in the colonic delivery of albendazole.

The relationship between man and substances that have abuse potentials,and whose use has been associated with the development or progression of substance use disorders has continued to evolve in terms of geography,economic implications,and *** shows that local plants with psychoactive constituents can get exported worldwide through global travel,commerce,or even *** and globalization also change people’s relationship with substances of abuse;hence,an area that was initially alien to certain substances might evolve to becoming a trafficking hub,and then a destination.A case in point is Africa where a rapidly increasing prevalence of substance use/abuse and substance use disorder among adolescents and young adults is putting enormous strain on the economy,healthcare system,and society at ***,there appears to be a paucity of scientific literature and data on the epidemiology,risk assessment,and contributing factors to substance use and the development of substance use disorders across *** this narrative review,we examine extant literature(PubMed,Google scholar,Medline)for information on the prevalence,trends,and influencers of substance use and the development of substance use *** is with a view of understanding the determinants of substance use and factors that influence the development of substance use disorders in the region,and how this information can be channeled towards developing a comprehensive intervention and treatment program.

Assessment of Dithionite and Oxalate Extractable Iron and Aluminium Oxides on a Landscape on Basement Complex soil in south-Western Nigeria

The study investigats the morphological, physical and chemical characteristic of a toposequence on basement complex in Ejioku area, south-western Nigeria on latitude 07°28.675'N;and longitude 004°07.219'E;180 m above sea level at the upper slope. It terminates at the valley bottom on latitude 07°28.756'N;and longitude 004°07.229'E;175 m above sea level. The topography of the site is moderately slope (not greater than 10%). The aim is to examine the two forms of sesquioxides (crystalline-dithionite extractible Fe & Al and amorphous-oxalate Fe & Al) and their distribution on the toposequence. The crystalline form of Fe oxide dominates all the positions and ranges from 7.2 g/kg at the valley bottom to 444.3 g/kg at the crest compared to the amorphous forms that range from 2.7 g/kg to 10.9 g/kg. The crystalline and amorphous aluminium oxide contents of the soils are low (2.9 g/kg - 43.3 g/kg and 1.3 g/kg - 8.7 g/kg respectively). There is significant negative relationship between Fed and Fed/Feo (r =-0.15;P n = 16). There is also a correlation between Feo and Ald (r = 0.63;P n = 16), FeO and FeO/Fed (r = 0.44;P n = 16), signifying a high level of weathering. The relatively high amount of Fed virtually at all the horizons indicates that the crystalline and less active forms of the oxides exist more on the landscape and may be responsible for the non-availability of some nutrient like phosphorus that may be sorbed to their crystals lattice. All forms of Al in the soils are low especially, the oxalate extractable forms, when compare with the dithionite extractable forms. However, there is a significant correlation between Ald and Feo/Fed (r = 0.57;P s a result of high accumulation of crystalline form of Fe and Al oxide with increasing depth, most especially, at the crest/upper slope, there is greater amount of concretions, nodules and plinthites which will lead to further deterioration of the soil for agricultural purposes.

Background: Accurate temperature measurement is a critical step in evaluating health or disease especially in children and immmunocompromised subjects;inaccurate measurement may lead to improper diagnosis, wrong treatment or inappropriate intervention. several methods of temperature measurements exist and comparing these gives room for choosing a near ideal method in terms of speed, safety and accuracy. The study aimed to compare the forehead non touch infra-red thermometer with the axilllary mercury-in-glass method of temperature measurement in the Paediatric age-group. Methods: study was given ethical approval as part of a larger study. Four hundred and thirty seven children aged 1 to 24 months were studied at the well-baby/immunizationclinic of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital over a 6-months period. Both non-touch infrared and theregular mercury-in-glass thermometers were used to take the body temperatures. Data were analysed with sPss version 21. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between the two methods of temperature measurements, while Bland-Altman method was used to test for level of agreement between them. Results: The mean age and sD was 5.81 ± 4.04 months. Pearson correlation showed a positive correlation between the axillary mercury-in-glass and forehead non-touch infra-red thermometry readings (r = 0.281, p so, Bland-Altman method revealed a good agreement between both methods of thermometry as 96% of the readings were within the limits of agreement. Mean difference was 0.09°C (95% confidence interval 0.05 - 0.13). Conclusion: Axillary mercury-in-glass thermometer and forehead non touch infra-red thermometers have a good agreement and can be used interchangeably.

Assessment of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of hospital-associated venous thromboembolism in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria

Objective:This study assessed the level of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of venous thromboembolism(VTE)in a tertiary health *** and Methods:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 328 eligible respondents,selected using a random sampling method in a teaching hospital in Nigeria.A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the basic knowledge,risk factors,and preventive measures of ***:Findings from the study revealed that 51.2%scored above the mean score of 28.6±*** educational status of the respondents had a significant influence on their knowledge of risk factors of VTE(F=4.696,P=0.031).Conclusion:The overall knowledge of nurses is satisfactory,although the majority could not answer correctly questions on the administration of prefilled anticoagulants and identification of some key risk factors of VTE.
