Extended criteria brain-dead organ donors:Prevalence and impact on the utilisation of livers for transplantation in Brazil

Association of the level of heteroplasmy of the 15059G>A mutation in the MT-CYB mitochondrial gene with essential hypertension

AIM: To examine whether the heteroplasmy level for 15059G>A mutation in the mitochondrial genome might be associated with essential hypertension. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 196 unrelated participants randomly selected from general population (90 males and 106 females) who underwent a regular medical check-up at the Institute for Ath-erosclerosis Research (Moscow, Russia). One hundred and twenty of them (61%) had essential hypertension, and 76 (39%) were apparently healthy normotensive persons. The level of heteroplasmy for 15059G>A mutation occurring in the coding region of cytochrome b gene (MT-CYB) of mtDnA isolated from the blood leukocytes, was quantified using DnA pyrosequencing method. RESULTS: The 15059G>A heteroplasmy level ranged between 4% and 83%, with a median level of 31%. Between the upper and lower quartiles of 15059G>A heteroplasmy distribution, significant differences were observed for patients’ age, systolic blood pressure, and triglyceride levels. 15059G>A heteroplasmy correlated both with age (r = 0.331, P nd the presence of hypertension (r = 0.228, P = 0.002). Regression analysis revealed that the age explains 12% variability of 15059G>A heteroplasmy, and hypertension independently explains more 5% variability. The 15059G>A heteroplasmy exceeding 31% was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of essential hypertension (odds ratio 2.76; P (Fisher) 0.019]. The study participants with high 15059G>A heteroplasmy level were found to have significantly higher age (P nd the prevalence of essential hypertension (P = 0.033), as compared to those with low 15059G>A heteroplasmy level. These observations suggested a positive correlation between the level of 15059G>A heteroplasmy and essential hypertension. COnCLUSIOn: This study provides the evidence of association of mtDnA 15059G>A mutation heteroplasmy with essential hypertension.

The liver is a unique parenchymal organ with a regenerative capacity allowing it to restore up to 70%of its *** knowledge of this phenomenon dates back to Greek mythology(the story of Prometheus),many aspects of liver regeneration are still not understood.A variety of different factors,including inflammatory cytokines,growth factors,and bile acids,promote liver regeneration and control the final size of the organ during typical regeneration,which is performed by mature hepatocytes,and during alternative regeneration,which is performed by recently identified resident stem cells called“hepatic progenitor cells”.Hepatic progenitor cells drive liver regeneration when hepatocytes are unable to restore the liver mass,such as in cases of chronic injury or excessive acute *** liver maintenance,the body mass ratio is essential for homeostasis because the liver has numerous functions;therefore,a greater understanding of this process will lead to better control of liver injuries,improved transplantation of small grafts and the discovery of new methods for the treatment of liver *** current review sheds light on the key molecular pathways and cells involved in typical and progenitor-dependent liver mass regeneration after various acute or chronic *** studies and a better understanding of liver regeneration will lead to the development of new therapeutic methods for liver diseases.

Synthesis and Properties of novel Surface Active Maleic Monomer Containing Phosphate Group

A novel surface active monomer （surfmer） containing poly（ethylene glycol） chain and terminated phosphate group was synthesized. The copolymerization of synthesized surfmer with nVP （n-vinylpyrrolidone） and with nVP and VEP （5-tert-butylperoxy-5-methyl-2-hexene-3-yne monomer） led to formation of corresponding surface-active copolymers. The capability of application of resulted copolymers as surface active macroinitiators of emulsion polymerization of styrene and as components of polymeric scaffolds was investigated.

A new selenium cationic clathrate Ⅰ Si46-xPxSey(x ≤ 2y, 6nthesized from the elements and characterized by X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy and wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDXS and WDXS). The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity were investigated as well. Si46-xPxSey reveals a wide homogeneity range due to the presence of vacancies in the Se guest positions inside the smaller cage of the clathrate Ⅰ structure. The vacancy ordering in the structure of Si46-xPxSey causes the change of space group from Pm3n(ideal clathrate Ⅰ) to Pm3 accompanied by the redistribution of P and Si atoms over different framework atoms. Precise determination of the composition of Si46-xPxSey by WDXS showed slight but noticeable deviation(x ≤ 2y) of phosphorus content from the Zintl counting scheme(x = 2y). The compound is diamagnetic. Band structure and DOS calculations show semiconductors. The thermal and electrical transport properties will be investigated to confirm that.

Thermo- and pH-Responsive Hydrogels Based on n-Isopropylacrylamide and Allylamine Copolymers

The thermo- and pH-responsive hydrogels were synthesized via copolymerization of n-isopropylacrylamide and al-lylamine hydrochloride monomers. The equilibrium swelling of the hydrogels was studied as a function of temperature and pH in aqueous solutions. It was shown that controlled alteration of the hydrogel phase transition temperature can be achieved by changing their composition and pH of the environment. Increase in content of hydrophilic allylamine from 10 to 60 wt% in monomer mixture causes a shift of the phase transition temperature from 35oC to 47oC. Hydrogels with n-isopropylacrylamide/allylamine hydrochloride mass ratio of 3:2 show the highest pH-response. Values of average molecular weight between polymer cross-links, , and Flory parameter, χ, were calculated using temperature dependences of the equilibrium swelling of the synthesized hydrogel.
