Short-term microbial responses to soluble inorganic P input in a tropical lowland rain forest in Amazonia

In non-flooded lowland rain forests with low soil phosphorus(P)in parts of Amazonia,P cycling largely occurs via leaf litter recycling by arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)fungal *** high input of P into these ecosystems occurs during drought years with increased *** the length and frequency of drought events are projected to increase in the region,a single-dose nutrient addition experiment was carried out to test how this would impact P *** application rate of 4 kg P ha^(-1) was used,which corresponds to twice the amount of litter-derived P in an average *** was hypothesized that i)the added mineral P would be immobilized by soil microorganisms,leading to measurable increase in soil microbial biomass carbon(C)and P and ii)AM colonization rate would be reduced by the pulse in mineral P available for plant *** results did not support either of our *** addition of P did not have an effect on AM root colonization,nor was P immobilized by soil microbiota during the experimental *** lack of a difference between the control and treatment at our study site could be attributed to the relatively low one-off dose of P applied that did not change either the colonization rate of roots by AM fungi or the amount of soil available labile *** obtain a mechanistic understanding of the availability,capture,and use of P by plant-symbiont associations in tropical rain forest ecosystems,further integrated studies of the soil-plant system combining long-term nutrient manipulations,modeling,and experimental approaches are required.

One-Variable Attack on the Industrial Fault Classification System and Its defense

Recently developed fault classification methods for industrial processes are mainly ***,models based on deep neural networks have significantly improved fault classification accuracy owing to the inclusion of a large number of data ***,these data-driven models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks;thus,small perturbations on the samples can cause the models to provide incorrect fault *** recent studies have demonstrated the vulnerability of machine learning methods and the existence of adversarial *** paper proposes a black-box attack method with an extreme constraint for a safe-critical industrial fault classification system:Only one variable can be perturbed to craft adversarial ***,to hide the adversarial samples in the visualization space,a Jacobian matrix is used to guide the perturbed variable selection,making the adversarial samples in the dimensional reduction space invisible to the human *** the one-variable attack(OVA)method,we explore the vulnerability of industrial variables and fault types,which can help understand the geometric characteristics of fault classification *** on the attack method,a corresponding adversarial training defense method is also proposed,which efficiently defends against an OVA and improves the prediction accuracy of the *** experiments,the proposed method was tested on two datasets from the Tennessee–Eastman process(TEP)and steel plates(SP).we explore the vulnerability and correlation within variables and faults and verify the effectiveness of OVAs and defenses for various classifiers and *** industrial fault classification systems,the attack success rate of our method is close to(on TEP)or even higher than(on SP)the current most effective first-order white-box attack method,which requires perturbation of all variables.

Multicomponent alloys show intricate microstructure evolution,providing materials engineers with a nearly inexhaustible variety of solutions to enhance material *** microstructure evolution simulations are indispensable to exploit these *** simulations,however,require the handling of high-dimensional and prohibitively large data sets of thermodynamic quantities,of which the size grows exponentially with the number of elements in the alloy,making it virtually impossible to handle the effects of four or more *** this paper,we introduce the use of tensor completion for highdimensional data sets in materials science as a general and elegant solution to this *** show that we can obtain an accurate representation of the composition dependence of high-dimensional thermodynamic quantities,and that the decomposed tensor representation can be evaluated very efficiently in microstructure *** realization enables true multicomponent thermodynamic and microstructure modeling for alloy design.

Strengthening of tungsten by coherent rhenium precipitates formed during low fluence irradiation

Machine perfusion of the liver: which is the best technique to mitigate ischaemia-reperfusion injury?

longstanding research describes the mechanisms whereby the restoration of blood flow and reoxygenation(reperfusion) aggravates the ischaemic injury caused by a period of anoxia to a donor liver. This phenomenon, called ischaemia-reperfusion injury(IRI), leads to parenchymal cell death,microcirculatory failure, and inflammatory immune response. Clinically, IRI is the main factor responsible for the occurrence of posttransplant graft dysfunction and ischaemic-type biliary lesions. while extended criteria donor livers are more vulnerable to IRI, their utilisation is required to address the shortfall in donor organs. Thus, the mitigation of IRI should drive the setting of a new benchmark for marginal organ preservation. Herein, strategies incorporating different modalities of machine perfusion of the liver to alleviate IRI are discussed in conjunction with advantages and disadvantages of individual *** leading to reperfusion of the liver during machine perfusion(in situ normothermic regional perfusion and ex situ normothermic machine perfusion)may mitigate IRI by shortening the ischaemic period of the organs. This benefit potentially escalates from the minimum level, obtained following just partial alleviation of the ischaemic period, to the maximum level, which can be potentially achieved with ischaemia-free organ transplantation. Techniques that do not lead to reperfusion of the liver during machine perfusion(hypothermic,subnormothermic, and controlled-oxygenated rewarming) optimise mitochondrial oxidative function and replenish cellular energy stores, thereby lowering reactive oxygen species production as well as the activation ofdownstream inflammatory pathways during reperfusion. Further mechanistic insights into IRI may guide the development of donor-specific protocols of machine perfusion on the basis of the limitations of individual categories of extended criteria donor organs.

Myxomycete diversity in the Tarim basin and eastern Tian-Shan,Xinjiang Prov.,China

we report the results of a survey for myxomycetes in the Chinese province of Xinjiang,covering the northern part of the Tarim basin and the eastern Tian-Shan *** in the hyperarid Tarim basin focused on monospecific Tugai forests;these are park-like stands of the phreatophyte Populus *** a transect from the Tarim basin to the mountains,trees vanish outside the basin,but reoccur at ca.1,400 m elevation as monospecific forests of Picea schrenkiana;the second focal area of the *** a total of 362 substrate samples(245 from the Tarim basin,177 from the mountains)we obtained 477 determinable records of myxomycetes,plus a total of 206 field collections,the latter almost exclusively from the spruce forests in the *** the 80 taxa recorded 53 are represented by field collections,and 32 were found in moist chamber cultures;with a very low overlap in species assemblages found in the field and in *** receiving less than 50 mm annual precipitation,corticolous myxomycetes were common in the Tugai forests,with Physarum pseudonotabile ***.,Didymium anellus,Echinostelium colliculosum and Protophysarum phloiogenum as the most common *** to the Tarim basin(21 taxa)the mountains were much richer in myxomycetes(75 taxa),although the diversity recovered from cultures was comparable(21 vs.28 taxa).Most species from the mountains fruited on decaying spruce,often collected under or even inside the logs due to the extremely dry *** results suggest first that there is no lower limit of annual precipitation for myxomycetes,as long as at least some days with nightly dew fall allow these organisms to complete their life ***,the two examples of surprisingly diverse myxomycete assemblages from monospecific forests demonstrate,that species richness of this group is not necessarily connected with plant diversity of the *** survey is the most eastern of a large-scale study of myxomycete diversity throughout M

Neurohumoral,cardiac and inflammatory markers in the evaluation of heart failure severity and progression

Heart failure is common in adult population,accounting for substantial morbidity and mortality *** main risk factors for heart failure are coronary artery disease,hypertension,obesity,diabetes mellitus,chronic pulmonary diseases,family history of cardiovascular diseases,cardiotoxic *** main factor associated with poor outcome of these patients is constant progression of heart *** the current review we present evidence on the role of established and candidate neurohumoral biomarkers for heart failure progression management and diagnostics.A growing number of biomarkers have been proposed as potentially useful in heart failure patients,but not one of them still resembles the characteristics of the"ideal biomarker."A single marker will hardly perform well for screening,diagnostic,prognostic,and therapeutic management ***,the pathophysiological and clinical significance of biomarkers may depend on the presentation,stage,and severity of the *** authors cover main classification of heart failure phenotypes,based on the measurement of left ventricular ejection fraction,including heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,and the recently proposed category heart failure with mid-range ejection *** could envisage specific sets of biomarker with different performances in heart failure progression with different left ventricular ejection fraction especially as concerns prediction of the future course of the disease and of left ventricular adverse/reverse *** article is intended to provide an overview of basic and additional mechanisms of heart failure progression will contribute to a more comprehensive knowledge of the disease pathogenesis.
