Effects of laying on of hands with and without a spiritual context on pain and functionality of older women with knee osteoarthritis:study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Background： Laying on of hands （LooH） is a culturally-accepted therapy in several traditions. In Brazil, ＂Spiritism＂（third-largest religious tradition in number of followers） uses LooH with the name of ＂Spiritist Passe＂（SP）. However, there are few studies assessing SP＇s role in medical outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the effects of LooH, with and without a spiritual context, on pain, joint stiffness, and functional capacity of older women （≥60 years old） with knee osteoarthritis （KOA）. Methods/design： In this triple-blind, prospective randomized controlled trial, older women with KOA are assigned to three groups： LooH with a spiritual context group, LooH group without a spiritual context, and a control group receiving no intervention. Patients are assessed by a blinded researcher at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks. Pain, joint stiffness, and functional capacity are assessed using Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. Other measures such as anxiety, depression, gait speed, and quality of life will also be assessed. To detect differences between groups, a post-intervention com- parison between the three groups and a mean change （post-pre） comparison among the three groups will be done using analysis of variance. All statistical analyses will be performed using an intention-to-treat approach and a per-protocol analysis. Discussion： A pragmatic design using SP, LooH without spiritual context, and no LooH may provide further scientific evidence on SP＇s feasibility and efficacy for KOA patients.

Short-term microbial responses to soluble inorganic P input in a tropical lowland rain forest in Amazonia

Gas-phase hydrogenation influence on defect behavior in titanium-based hydrogen-storage material

Titanium and its alloys are promising materials for hydrogen storage. However, hydrogen penetration accompanies the exploitation of hydrogen storage alloys. In particular, hydrogen penetration and accumulation in titanium alloys changes their mechanical properties. Therefore, the research works of such materials are mainly focused on improving the reversibility of hydrogen absorption-liberation processes, increasing the thermodynamic characteristics of the alloys, and augmenting their hydrogen storage capacity. In the process of hydrogenation-dehydrogenation, the formed defects both significantly reduce hydrogen storage capacity and can also be used to create effective traps for hydrogen. Therefore, the investigation of hydrogen interaction with structural defects in titanium and its alloys is very important. The present work, the hydrogen-induced formation of defects in the alloys of commercially pure titanium under temperature gas-phase hydrogenation（873 K） has studied by positron lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening spectroscopy. Based on the evolution of positron annihilation parameters τ_f, τd, their corresponding intensities If, Idand relative changes of parameters S/S0and W/W0, the peculiarities of hydrogen interaction with titanium lattice defects were investigated in a wide range of hydrogen concentrations from 0.8at% to 32.0at%.

Photochemical Decomposition of Pesticide Chemicals in Aerosol Particles and Thin Films Relevant to Environmental Conditions

Contamination of the environment by pesticides is the inevitable aftermath of plant protection, and a substantial portion of pesticide pollutants exists in the form of aerosol particles levitated in the air and deposited on plants, and as the pesticide residues （thin films） on the surface of plant leaves. The sunlight photolysis could be the resource for the accelerated photochemical decomposition of pesticide compounds to minimize the long-term environmental contamination. The rates of photochemical decomposition of pesticide chemicals propiconazole （commercial formulation Tilt） and haloxyfop-ethoxyethyl （Zellek） were measured in particles of 0.12-1.3 μm in diameter and in films 0.04-0.2 μm thick. A specific polyaromatic sensitizer Shirvanol was used to induce accelerated decomposition of the above pesticide particulates under both the solar radiation and the artificial UV light. It was established that propiconazole decomposes by the sensitized photo-oxidation only, but haloxyfop-ethoxyethyl reacts in both the oxygen （air） and oxygen-free mediums via both the direct and sensitized reactions. The photochemical mechanisms are hypothesized and argued for the oxidative and non-oxidative decompositions. The haloxyfop-ethoxyethyl （Zellek） residues lbrmed on foliage upon pesticide treatments of agricultural fields would essentially decompose under sunlight via a direct photoreaction in 4-6 weeks, but the propiconazole （Tilt） contaminants probably need more time.

Comparison of fatty acid contents and composition in major lipid classes of larvae and adults of mosquitoes （Diptera： Culicidae） from a steppe region

Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids （PUFA）. We studied fatty acid （FA） composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations （Diptera： Culicidae）, that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short-chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14：2n-6 and 14：3n-3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized （or retroconverted） by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n-3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred.

Dynamic failure of dry and fully saturated limestone samples based on incubation time concept

This paper outlines the results of experimental study of the dynamic rock failure based on the comparison of dry and saturated limestone samples obtained during the dynamic compression and split tests. The tests were performed using the Kolsky method and its modifications for dynamic splitting. The mechanical data(e.g. strength, time and energy characteristics) of this material at high strain rates are obtained. It is shown that these characteristics are sensitive to the strain rate. A unified interpretation of these rate effects, based on the structuraletemporal approach, is hereby presented. It is demonstrated that the temporal dependence of the dynamic compressive and split tensile strengths of dry and saturated limestone samples can be predicted by the incubation time criterion. Previously discovered possibilities to optimize(minimize) the energy input for the failure process is discussed in connection with industrial rock failure processes. It is shown that the optimal energy input value associated with critical load, which is required to initialize failure in the rock media, strongly depends on the incubation time and the impact duration. The optimal load shapes, which minimize the momentum for a single failure impact, are demonstrated. Through this investigation, a possible approach to reduce the specific energy required for rock cutting by means of high-frequency vibrations is also discussed.

nitrogen and Carbon Isotope Data of Olenekian to Anisian Deposits from Kamenushka/South Primorye, Far-Eastern Russia and Their Palaeoenvironmental Significance

The Kamenushka Formation, exposed in the northern part of South Primorye （Kamennshka-1 and Kamenushka-2 sections）, is one of the few localities in the world with richly fossiliferous Lower-Upper Olenekian sedimentary successions. Lower to Middle Triassic ammonoid-, brachiopod- and conodont-bearing silty-clayey deposits of the Kamenushka-1 and Kamenushka-2 sections have been isotope-geochemically investigated in detail. As a result, these sections, together with the previously investigated Abrek Section, exposed in the southern part of South Primorye, provide almost complete ^15non- and ^13Corg- records for the Lower Triassic of this region. nine n- isotope intervals and the five negative C-isotope excursions, reflecting, apparently, unstable climatic and hydrological conditions, have been distinguished in the Lower Triassic of South Primorye. On the basis of the new C-isotope data the Mesohedenstroemia bosphorensis Zone （upper part）, Shimanskyites shimanskyi and neocolumbites insignis zones of South Primorye are correlated now with the Lower Smithian part of the Yinkeng Formation, the Upper Smithian part of the Helongshan Formation and the Middle Spathian part of the nanlinghu Formation in South China, respectively, as has been observed in the Abrek, Kamenushka-2, West Pingdingshan and Majiashan sections.

Electrical triggering of earthquakes:results of laboratory experiments at spring-block models

Recently published results of field and laboratory experiments on the seismic/acoustic response to injection of direct current （DC） pulses into the Earth crust or stressed rock samples raised a question on a possibility of electrical earthquake triggering. A physical mechanism of the considered phenomenon is not clear yet in view of the very low current density （10-7-10-s A/m^2） generated by the pulsed power systems at the epicenter depth （5-10 km） of local earthquakes occurred just after the current injection. The paper describes results of laboratory ＂earthquake＂ triggering by DC pulses under conditions of a spring-block model simulated the seismogenic fault. It is experimentally shown that the electric triggering of the laboratory ＂earthquake＂（sharp slip of a movable block of the spring-block system） is possible only within a range of subcritical state of the system, when the shear stress between the movable and fixed blocks obtains 0.98-0.99 of its critical value. The threshold of electric triggering action is about 20 A/m^2 that is 7-8 orders of magnitude higher than estimated electric current density for Bishkek test site （northern Tien Shan, Kirghizia） where the seismic response to the man-made electric action was observed. In this connection, the electric triggering phenomena may be explained by contraction of electric current in the narrow conductive areas of the faults and the corresponding increase in current density or by involving the secondary triggering mechanisms like electromagnetic stimulation of conductive fluid migration into the fault area resulted in decrease in the fault strength properties.

Gravitation and the Unified nature of All Kinds of Motion in non-Empty Space (Part 1)

The presented work examines the mechanism and conditions of self-motion in bodies as systems of interacting elements. It is shown how the oscillation parameters of these elements determine the mode of motion of the system (body). In this case, the motion is considered as a consequence of symmetry breaking of forces in the systems themselves, and not as a reaction of individual elements to external influences. It is shown that such a violation takes place both in the gravitational field and when the system moves by inertia. Examples of the influence of changes in phase (φ) and frequency (f) parameters of the system elements on the velocity mode of its motion in space are considered. The identity of the causes of self-motion is revealed both in the case of gravitation and inertial motion.

The alternations of sedimentogenic and asedimentogenic belts on the continental shelf and slope are distinctive features in the East Asia marginal *** sedimentogenesis characteristics areconditioned by the terrigenous material supply and their distribution patterns. Facial analysis of the marginal basins reveals a number of typical facial models which are comparablewith the geosynclinal and subplatform formations of the ancient basins. The paragenetical situation and simultaneous coexistence of these facial models in the modern margi-nal seas indicate that the ancient formation could be deposited in the same way,at the same time andeven in the same basin.
